Micro drill bits for modding

I recently got a pair of Igo-Ls and wanted to open up the air holes to 1.5mm. First one went fine but I broke a bit in the second one and now its stuck. I trashed it Anyway I wanted to know what the consensus is for drill bits and modding. HSS? carbide? or other?

HSS will also get through stainless as it is hardened and likely the atty or more is not, but they will wear out sooner. Carbide is harder but also stiffer so breakage is easier if there is any flexing of the bit. Titanium coated hss is there for lubricating (but is just a thin layer.)

I got some bits today, 1.8mm HSS, and 3mm HSS titanium. I looked at dremel sets and copies, but just bits were just much more practical. I plan to mostly use these on aluminum and brass, but enlarging a hole in ss would not be out of the question.

Usual sewing needle sharpened on Dremel will open a hole from, say, 1.0mm to 1.3 mm. A triangle smal file too if you sand it with water on a grindstone and use it in your hand, slowly.
Anyway if you have broken CARBIDE bits, try to sharpen the last with a diamond tool. Works fine for me if it used on Dremel.

Heh, asdaq already answered asdaq, I now use cobalt bits, no titanium coated, they work much more reliable

Yes, Cobalt is nice too. Are there mods or atties out there that are heat treated? It seems it would be a nice feature, sure more expensive in processing, but harder mods too.

I wonder if their might be a way to reduce the need for such small holes. Perhaps by drilling a larger hole, but then inserting some sort of device that already had the small hole desired.

When I take a flight, there is a knob to turn to adjust the flow of air from the air conditioning. It seems to be, in essence, a needle valve. But, at the moment, I can't think of an elegant way to mount something like that on an atomizer.

Sorry, these are not solutions, just brainstorming in case it inspires someone else with a solution.

ainako, there is a lot of them say on eBay. Just search for cobalt bits. One thing from my experience. These bits are fragile, very fragile and frequently get broken. If you broke a bit, use a diamond disk (they are cheap and sold everywhhere, eBay for example) and sharpen the remaining piece as if it's a drill bit. And this thing will be strong enough to make accurate miniature holes in SS etc. Of course you will not able to drill thick steel, but make a hole in 1mm wall is a piece of cake. Just use your Dremel at 20-25 RPM and don't worry

I went to homedepot...They sell a dremel 6 peice drill bit set with a couple very small bits in it

Rigid 14 piece drill bit set from home depot no need to buy expensive bits. Since I'm running dual coil on my IGO-L I just drill from from one hole to the other side.

I would recommend dremel with a small conic grinder bit. You can gradually increase the size of airholes, and try them in process.
