As stated, dry burning will bring life back to that head. I usually go through two tanks of
juice then rinse them off. I like to let it dry so I have quite a few that I have in rotation. Dry burn them when my "ready" stock is running low. I have about 15 in my rotation and haven't bought a new head since late October? Can't remember when I last made a purchase. I only have had two die on me.
About once a month I do a Polident soak on the heads. It really revives and whitens the wicks. Put the teakettle on to boil, get a cup out of the cupboard, drop a Polident tablet into the cup, put all but one head in the cup, when the teakettle whistles pour the boiling water to cover the heads, let sit until you remember them. Rinse thoroughly. It does take some of the gunk off, but I strongly suggest dry burning them before the soak. Let them dry and you have a nice stock ready again.
I'm thinking of trying the soak on the stems too. I know there are times when some juice gets down that center and not sure if rinsing gets it all out even though I do blow all the water out after rinsing. Do NOT put the plastic tube or that little silicone cap into the soak. I had a tube that I couldn't unscrew from the base (daughter had it and had a leak, knew nothing about maintaining anything) soaked it. Yes I got it apart but it now is slightly warped(?) where the threads are to screw onto the metal threading.
Now that I count back, those heads are doing GREAT! Must be doing something right.

. Now watch, they're gonna start to die on me. Just jinxed them huh?
