The Old Fashioned is a classic. And we drink plenty of 'em in VA... no need to go to Wisconsin, lol.

Nil, a Julep has bourbon vs. rum, & no lime. Just mint, sugar, bourbon.

Man, that bottle of Maker's Mark is looking better and better...

My people on Daddy's side approximate a ten generation Faulknerian novel down in South Carolina. They'll argue until 2 AM on the finer points of a TRUE julep. And a true julep is a divine thing.
They say that my Aunt Hattie was the only one could really do it right, and she could also shoot a fly off a fence at 500 yards. They lie something awful, also.

But you don't want to be gay down there, which is why Daddy became an inside-the- beltway lawyer, which is another wrongheaded thing to do. Inside-the-beltway lawyers mostly drank martinis, unless gay, in which case they tried to teach the Georgetown bartenders to make true juleps. And retired early, and devoted the rest of their lives to Bach. Well, Daddy did. Bourbon'll see you through most anything.

But the only liquor I'll vape is rum, because rum is candy.

Between Joe & aubergine I haven't laughed this hard in a week.

The first appearance of a mint julep in print came in a book by John Davis published in London in 1803, where it was described as "a dram of spirituous liquor that has mint steeped in it, taken by Virginians of a morning."

It's 11:37 here in Virginia as I type this... I got 23 more julep drinkin' minutes to go. Then I'll switch to Old-Fashioneds. ;)

The previous recipe looks great.. just remember to crush the mint leaves.
Below find my RFD*
I had on Wednesday after grass mowing and several while watching the Derby Yesterday.
BTW I lived in Kentucky for a few years and when I went to the derby in 2001 they made the Mint Juleps using a bottled mix. And I wasn't in the cheap seats either, maybe volume is a problem when you have 150, 000 to serve

I usually top with one or two stemmed maraschino cherries and sometimes a tablespoon of cherry juice sneaks into the bottom of the glass before the crushed ice flies in.

Now should I try the juice?

You know, I really missed the boat on the sticker color for the Mint Julep.

Mary Kay suggested silver to match the silver cups true mint juleps are served in. And that would have been fabulous.

I chose a brownish green to match the color of the drink (or at least some versions of it, since I saw a lot of variations in the images I googled). But it didn't even turn out with the brownish tint I picked out, coming out too similar IMO to our other mints. :(

I'm really starting to hate chinese printers. :(

mmmmm I love mint juleps on a hot summer day. I think I'm gonna have to order these

Vap Khymyst, my only problem with the recipe is it saying to use Jim Beam, not the cheap stuff... Jim is the cheap stuff. you want a really good bourbon go for Knob Creek which is Jim Beam's better stuff, or go for Makers Mark. Jim is for a bbq spritz when I've got leaner meat on the smoker, usually use it with some apple juice for ribs and brisket flats, the others bourbons are are the ones I'm drinking while I'm 'cueing

My last encounter with mint juleps involved projectile vomiting. I vowed to keep at least 500 paces from them from then on.

 Reminds me of my last mint julep "experience." My friend was hosting a large party/bbq and I went early in the morning to help prepare dishes and set-up. She had a few large pitchers of julep that had been steeping in the fridge overnight. Throughout the morning she would check the pitchers.... and say "taste this, do you think it's ready?" then add simple syrup or mint... "what about this? is that enough?" By the time the first people arrived, I could barely stand.
