Never was a Monkees fan, but I heard them doing this song and was actually impressed with their harmonies... icon_wink.gif

(It is believed they learned the song from their producer, Chip Douglas who himself performed it with his former band The Modern Folk Quartet on their 1964 album.)

I did a little research on the song, and this is what I found: **

Riu, Riu, Chiu is a Spanish "villancico" published in 1556 that has attained some contemporary fame as a Christmas carol. A villancico was a popular form for song in post-Renaissance Spain. This carol became one of the more widely known such works in its time; versions of it today often contain updated translations to filter out its archaic words and meanings. The author of this carol is generally thought to be anonymous, but its text, possibly originally written in Portuguese, has been attributed by some to Mateo Flecha (1481-1553). The melody to Riu, riu, chiu probably dates to the fifteenth century or earlier.

And the lyrics from the version they were singing!!

Monkees – Riu Chiu Lyrics

Riu riu chiu, la guarda ribera;
Dios guardo el lobo de nuestra cordera,
Dios guardo el lobo de neustra cordera.

El lobo rabioso la quiso morder,
Mas Dios poderoso la supo defender;
Quisola hazer que no pudiese pecar,
Ni aun original esta Virgen no tuviera.

Riu, riu chiu...
Este qu'es nacido es el gran monarca,
Christo patriarca de carne vestido;
Hemos redemido con se hazer chiquito,
Aunqu'era infinito, finito se hiziera.

Riu, riu chiu...

Translated:

River, roaring river, guard our homes in safety,
God has kept the black wolf from our lamb, our Lady.
God has kept the black wolf from our lamb, our Lady.

Raging mad to bite her, there the wolf did steal,
But our God Almighty defended her with zeal.
Pure He wished to keep Her so She could never sin,
That first sin of man never touched the Virgin sainted.

River, roaring river...
He who's now begotten is our mighty Monarch,
Christ, our Holy Father, in human flesh embodied.
He has brought atonement by being born so humble,
Though He is immortal, as mortal was created.

River, roaring river...

SK, had to think about whether to like that or not. lol It was done well, but man do we sing some horrible things to our kids as lullabyes. I sang rock a bye baby to my son, but I had to change a lot of the words. I wasn't about to sing we're gonna stick you in the top of a tree, the winds gonna blow, the trees gonna break, and yur gonna fall and bust your.........diaper! Then expect him to go to sleep. :facepalm: hehehe

Funny, but I was thinking about that other lullaby when I posted that song... :facepalm: LOL!!

And about how people were trying to say that "Ring Around the Rosie" was about the Plague... (which it isn't!!) and how horrible a lot of the fairy tales were, too!! It's a wonder kids make it through all of that without becoming neurotic... or do they?? ;)

Bored with standard tree ornaments, my mom went across the border and bought a plethora of inexpensive, colorful ornaments from Mexico made of painted tin, straw, wood, and clay. Some are stars, Santa's, bells, and other traditional shapes, but many of them are of animals. These gave our tree a rather unique look compared to what one usually sees in most of the country. It's also a look that I like and I still use those ornaments today.

Some similar examples I found on the net:

When I was about 8 years old we were taking a family trip for Christmas and my parents forgot me. I spent the next several days at home all by myself, and as luck would have it, a couple of local burglars were trying to rob our house at the same time. Only by sheer ingenuity was I able to thwart their efforts and survive the altercation.
