I do miss cooking a huge Thanksgiving dinner. Whether we had a lot or a little coming, I would start 2 days ahead of time doing prep work, cookin cornbread, choppin stuff etc. The menu was a total carb fest and went something like this

Biggest turkey I could find
Yam casserole
Smashed taters
tater salad
mac and cheese
green bean casserole
cranberry sauce (the kind in the can) one time tried a cranberry orange relish that just didn't come out right
cornbread/white bread mix stuffing (we call it stuffin' but we don't stuff it in the bird)
Rolls
Pies (other folks brought em or we bought em. I love to cook but never baked much) My son always wanted a pecan pie with candles for his bday whether it fell on Thanksgiving or not
Seems like I'm missin sumpthin, but that gives you an idea

Yum....that sounds good, Deb!

We cheated a bit this year...we're getting 2 Honey baked spiral sliced hams. We got a shop about a mile up the road...so it was hard to resist. AND...
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Green beans w/BACON (of course!)
Wild yams w/brown sugar, cinnamon and...honey!
Biscuits
Homemade strawberry shortcake

Adult beverage menu; ;)

Jim Beam w/ Coke
Bulleit bourbon w/Coke
Kahlua Mudslides
Stella Artois (my favorite beer, BTW)
Sweet tea

All the above in amounts to feed an army!

Meager Thanksgiving here. I have some sliced cooked turkey breast in the freezer. Gonna pull that out and do box stuffing and a jar of gravy. Open a can of cranberries and nuke a sweet potato. No sense in making a large meal for just one person. Son will be here but turkey is another of the many things he won't eat. Hubby is who knows where... either PA or Ohio...

Bing Crosby was my grandmother's favorite Christmas performer and Silver Bells was her favorite Christmas song. The LP cover shown in the video is what was played. I loved the whole album so much that I took it to school one time for Show and Tell. It was one of the first LPs I ever bought, and I also have the CD.

First performed by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell in the 1950 film "The Lemon Drop Kid" released in 1951. The first recorded version was by Bing Crosby and Carol Richards in 1950.

We haven't done it in a number of years, but I really enjoyed the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals we would do as a community at church. It got a bit difficult for those of us who also cooked huge family meals, which is one reason we stopped, but it was really great to have a traditional meal and the fellowship with out church family.

Going to post this then edit to add some chat since I'm having issues with browser closing on me

ETA: Count I couldn't see it, but that was so sweet of you! Thanks.

DT that sounds very good, but ya need some Sailor Jerry rum and Dr Pepper with lime on that adult drink menu. And I'll be right over lol

Joan, so sorry you're having such a meager Thanksgiving, but lots less work and little clean up! The last couple years at my SIL's we've just gotten the already cooked meal from the local grocery store, and we'll likely do that again this year, or just get hamburgers or something. May be able to visit with son in the evening, or the next day, which is his birthday.

Christmas through New Year's was also the time when my mom would break out the candle carousels. We had two or three of them.... only one had the chimes, if I recall.

My mother had an old one too. Her house was built in 1792, and had the big old radiators and steam heat. The carousel sat on that, (without candles, or they would have melted), and the heat from the radiator made the carousel turn.

One year we got snowed in for Thanksgiving with no power and nothing festive to eat. This year, we will probably also be snowed in with no power, but I've got lots of goodies I was going to bring to my brother-in-law's house, and some chicken cordon bleu in the freezer, so if we can't get out, at least we can munch on goodies! :)

Hi Joan!

That's what I'm talking about...simple and quick! Heck...the way it stands now, we'll be cleaning up for hours afterwards...:( Sometimes though, I can get away with supervising from the couch.
