So im trying to convert my mom. I recently had a son and she is 57 going on 90 with the way she smokes. 2PAD smoker rollin pipe tobacco. I love her very dearly, she has a very wicked cough and the way she wheezes when she breathes scares the living .... out of me. I told her once i got my new setup (Which i did) I would hand her down my current setup. I have 2 ego 1100's and a spare CE4 or 2 that i took over to her house this evening.

Now i remember when i first started. That first vapor hit is very harsh and makes you cough. Go figure she would almost die taking her first drag off of the setup. So i told her mom the first is always the worst, try again please. To no avail she went into the worst coughing fit i have ever seen her have. So i also know that PG gives a harder throat hit and the mix was 70/30. I also know that more nic = harsher hits.. However she is a 2pad smoker...

I'm thinking if i try maybe a 100% VG 6mg or so liquid she might have more success and it might be easier on her poor torn up lungs.. Any ideas guys? Im pretty desperate to help her make the switch. I also ordered about 100 dollars worth of supplies today in the hopes that maybe ill find a right flavor or mix that will help her. I even purchased a bunch of DIY supplies with the idea of her in mind... (Dont get me wrong i planned on doing that anyway! :p) but she was the driving force behind the "Purchase" Button. She says perfume's and smells send her "Allergies" All haywire and into an asthma attack. So i think ill try and mix her an unflavored 100% VG 6-16MG Liq.

Any ideas guys?

I had the same problem when I first started vaping after 50 yrs. of smoking. A 100%vg liquid got me going but then again, I was determined to use a vape. She might be a tougher sell as she is not commited to making it work. Smoking is easier and you have to really want it for vaping to take hold. Make sure she is getting plenty of nic. I started on 24mg at first and took small hits until my lungs became accustomed to the vapor. You might get her a Kanger mini-pro or Aerotank as they have a more airy and cooler draw that is easier on the lungs. Those top coils you gave her might just be too warm at first.

Not sure I can offer anything new here except being able to relate. I am the same age as your mom and also switched from roll your own pipe tobacco but the transition has been fairly easy for me. 100% VG, organic, light draws. 12 mg (or lower) nic, and dedication. I prefer to vape more often at a lower nic level to make it easier on my throat/lungs. You can provide her with all this but the dedication will probably be hers to find with your support.

I'm having the same problem with my mom-I got her a set up for Christmas-and she gets the coughs a lot(which frustrates her a little)-I've been working with her with her inhale technique-also got her some vg heavy stuff since the pg seems to bother her more I think(???) since her asthma inhaler makes her cough too...she's still smoking, but I'm looking at it as she's smoking less and she is starting to like the convenience(especially working around horses/hay, and being inside more in general due to winter time ), and she showed interest in checking out new flavors....don't know if she'll fully quit, but smoking less to me is a win even though I do worry-I can't force her to stop-I offer support, set up her toppers, and do what I can-I thought she'd embrace vaping like I did, but no...not yet. she is also doing better and enjoying her disposables a bit more since they are easier and for some reason hers last forever!(glad I got her a bunch when on sale)

I understand that perfectly; when you are older, and you are concious of your smoking and you WANT to cut down or quit, especially when you have tried a few times already and failed, one of the neat things about the disposable cigalikes, is when you get the craving, you might just take one looooongg slooow drag on, it..... and that's it for an hour! If you put the cap thing back on, it should last longer too. With real cigs, when you want to cut down, at some point you take a smoke break, light a cig, smoke half a cig, ... and then what.... dang, do you let thing go to waste? Try to put it out and use the rest later...? aw, dang, just smoke the damn already.

I'm gonna say that lowering the nic will cause it to fail. a 2PAD smoker will need at least 20 I would think to get the nic they crave. I'd go with a 50/50 at 24mg/ml nic, and choose a flavor that is NOTHING like tobacco.

I agree that changing the length and depth of the pull will help as well. slower, not as deeply, and longer.

It's different than smoking. It will NEVER be just like smoking. The more you try to make it a replacement for smoking, the more you'll fail. Make it a replacement for the addictive nicotine, with a completely different flavor.

Get her some strawberry 24mg 50/50, The ego/CE-4 should be fine, assuming it's about a 1.8-2.0ohm atomizer; that's about the sweet spot. have her take a small drag, then adjust upwards, rather than going full tilt with a huge inhale.

Don't try to make it a replacement for smoking. try to make it an alternative way to get the nicotine she craves, without all of the stuff that will kill her. Remind her that you want her in your life for a long, long time, and that this is a good way to insure that.

Hope this helps!

That's wonderful that your mom is ready to try vaping! I wish her success, as well as you for showing her the ropes. Just a word of encouragement.. my grandmother quit smoking when she got her first ecig setup over a year ago at age 67. She smoked heavily for over 50 years and she's done so well with this. Actually, she was a huge inspiration and reason for me to quit and start vaping as well.

Good luck to your mom and I hope she finds her comfort zone with it soon! :)

Update guys!

I went over to my mothers house tonight equipped with a eGo VV, set it at 3.0v and some 95% VG 24mg 5% Distilled water. She took some pulls, diddnt cough but diddnt get much vapor either. The coil is a 3ohm coil so should burn nice and cool for her. She even turned up the voltage on her own to get a better pull off it! I was proud of her. After about 5 minutes and 10 pulls she set it down and went back to smoking stinkies but i definately feel like we made progress today! Ill head back over in a week or so and see if her cartridge has emptied. Who knows, maybe she will call me and say she needs more! Ill keep you updated. Again, thank you all!

I really feel like maybe we might be getting somewhere!

'scuse me? I'm 63 and I just made the switch. Tonight will be one week off the tobacco product.!We old female dogs CAN learn new tricks!

Hey now, don't recall ever calling you old. lol. Good job on the one week, been 9 months for me.

I was the same as your mother! 2 PAD pipe tobacco hand rolled.

I found i have an allergic reaction to PG, so i smoke 100% Organic VG at 6mg, no cough's lung inhale or mouth to lung. Keep at her with it, and trying different things.

The thing with juice is that everyone is different, some can't tolerate high PG, some can't stand high VG. Tis one of the most frustrating things about Vape. Have to try this, that and the other till one finds ahhh, not that's a great vape!!! I went all up and down the scale before focusing on higher VG levels, Still tend to tweak my mix on a occasion just to see how it affects the flavor, but generally stay above 70% VG.

Upon reflection, that might work if the gear used can allow for lung hits that is, most lower end gear have to restrictive of air flow though.

Really??!! Personally, that remark really boils my blood. You'll find more pushing 60 people more able and willing to convert to vape then you young whipper snappers. Why? because we have been smoking for decades and it hurts like hell to continue smoking. Many of the established and innovating vapers here are baby boomers. Look at Zen, he has pushed the 60 mark some time ago, or at least looks like he has. lmao.

Just keep trying. One atomizer I would recommend is the Aspire Nautilus, perfect for us old farts pushing 60, easy to fill, has an adjustable air flow, very low maintenance, changeable coil heads, and provides a decent satisfying vape. I got one to try out to recommend to new vapers. While not as good as a rba, it's the next best thing. Would be willing to PIF mine to her for you, if you think it would help.

Good luck and god blessed her for having a child such as you!!

Vape long and Prosper!!

You bet! I am 70 (unbelievably) and smoked most of my adult life. Smoked lots. Quit a bunch of times with various and sundry methods. Always went back. I mostly decided to put and end to the smoking due to finally figuring out how much I was spending on cigs. Started with Greensmokes (for about a week) and stopped smoking with the very first one. Now like everyone else on this forum I am chasing different flavors and newer and better ways to vape. But I haven't even though of having another cigarette. Just because a person gets older doesn't mean that they become some stick in the mud who can't change their ways. Life is about growth and change all the way to the last day!!
