Morning Coffee

Hi Guys,

Just getting into vaping and been at it for a few weeks now.... still on the ciggies but gradually weening myself off them (have cut down 50% so going well!) Was smoking for 30 years and kicking the habit is top of my list at the moment :)

Anyway, I'm finding it tough to avoid the smokes just after waking up in the morning and drinking my morning coffee.... they just seem to go hand in hand!

Any suggestions on how to overcome the first smoke of the day?

The only thing I can think of is getting my mrs to hide my smokes the night before but I know that will just make me grumpy.......

Welcome! The only time not smoking really bothers me is first thing in the morning with coffee. What I do is vape a strong tobacco flavor with higher nic content. I usually vape around 12 mg during the day, so my morning tank always has 18 mg in it to start me off. Some mornings I have to vape my face off to feel satisfied, but most mornings I don't. The longer I go without cigarettes the easier mornings are.

Try this. When you smoke a cigarette with coffee or after a meal, vape alternately with your cigarette. Take a hit of one and then a hit of the other. If you are like me, you will discover that the cigarette tastes nasty and the vape tastes really good.

I did that for a while and it convinced my brain to allow me to chunk the cigarettes and vape instead. Once the decision was made, vaping became a natural for after meals and with my morning coffee. I never thought I could do away with my coffee and after meal cigs. I actually could and never looked back.

I got some higher level nic for in the morning. I told myself I should vape first and if I still wanted a ciggie, I could have one. I made the transition to vaping over a long period of time but I finally decded that it was silly to hang on to those last couple of cigs a day when vaping was obviously working for me.

What nic level are you using? You might want some e-liq with a little higher nic for mornings.

Hi Bridget,

I'm mixing my own stuff now after getting some 100mg Nic last week (can't buy nicotine loaded e-juice in Australia but can import 3 months supply for personal use).... most of my 0% e-juice juice is now mixed to 18mg which seems to suit me through the day and at night time....

I'll mix up some a bit stronger, didn't think about that!

I think it's the "routine" habit I need to break.... majority of the time I'm already half way through my first cigarette before remembering I'm trying to stop! As you can probably guess, I'm still half asleep until I've had a few smokes, a couple of cups of strong coffee and caught the 6:30am news :)

I did the combination thing (both cigs and vape) for the first two days, cutting way back on cigs (actually I smoked small cigars) the second day. On the third day I vapid all day with no cigars. After dinner on the third evening I lit up a cigar and took two puffs. It tasted terrible and gave me an instant headache! Haven't had a cigar since....

Good luck on this journey!

Hahaha - from typing my response to Bridget there's been so many good ideas posted!

Thanks for the feedback everybody!

I've read so many stories about people smoking for XX many years and just giving up after their first vape... just like that at the drop of a hat! Everybody will transition differently though and I'm pleased to hear that my problem seems to be quite common.

TBH, I had never heard of e-cigs until a few months ago and hadn't even considered stopping. It was the good news stories I kept on reading about that got me interested though.

Now I've started vaping I really see this as an almost painless path out of ciggies and am loving it ~ the whole experience with buying nice gear, mixing juice, waiting for orders from fasttech (and waiting, and waiting, and waiting LOL), looking and researching the next RBA you want to buy, etc, etc... I love it! It's really quite a healthy hobby!

what helped me was that the night before my ecig starter kit arrived i had my last cigarette right before i went to bed. didn't have any other ciggies on hand to fall back to in a moment of weakness.

after i started vaping and realized that i wasn't getting that intense buzz from vaping as i used to get from the first ciggie of the morning i came here and asked people why and someone told me that the buzz had more to do with the carbon monoxide decreasing the flow of oxygen to the brain than it had to do with nicotine. that explanation kinda gave me a reality check of what cigarettes (and big tobacco) are all about, which gave me the willpower to just accept the fact that while i wouldn't be getting that buzz anymore the ecig did satisfy my nicotine dependency. and that was the most important thing to me.

i just hit my breakfast flavors, i like pairing flavors with my coffee :)
This is what works for me! Honestly it just takes the right juice with the right setup to get you where you need to be, I myself am a pretty heavy coffee drinker and I have a Banana nut bread juice that goes oh so very very well with a nice cup of coffee.

The single most important thing about transitioning from tobacco to ecigs is doing it at your own pace. A lot of new vapers on this board try to cold turkey quit and immediately switch to vaping. Lots of them go back in frustration thinking that it's not going to work. What does work is cutting down drastically at first and then cutting out those last few after your body has adjusted to the new dose. It's all those added chemicals of addiction in cigarettes that make it so hard. Once you reach a plateau and level out, you can dump the rest.

If it takes you months before those last few get tossed, then that's fine. Some do it sooner and some retain the coffee and after meal cigs. You have to let your body adjust and then toss the pack in the trash. It's much easier that way. Vaping and smoking after a meal just reinforces the idea that cigarettes taste nasty and the vapor tastes really good. Both give you nicotine. Why hang on to the nasties?
