im trying to get my son to go to col for web design ..
Until recently, I designed computer related curriculum for junior colleges and tech schools, so I hope you don't mind me saying this.
The work-at-home designer is competing w/studios who have entire legal, financial, and marketing teams at their disposal. Big corps have inhouse staff to keep theirs updated and/or are going to use studios as mentioned.
Designing for the littler guys is practically non existent now, as someone with minimal computer skills can pretty much design their own web site nowadays with the software available, some of which is even free.
Forensics is a better field, IMHO but you need a very good foundation in mathematics or engineering to get a job.
Anything that can be automated will be. They are even getting rid of stockbrokers, they have computer robots who can press buttons now which if you knew what an entry level stockmarket kid does in his first job, is pretty much just a sales job.....make phone calls and press buttons.
you want to find something that 1) can't be oursourced and 2) needs an actual thinking human being with critical thinking skills to accomplish. Do not forget that the robotics of today are pretty "smart". They can follow logic due to flowchart programming, and thus almost appear to be able to problem-solve.
There are people with very high level mathematical and engineering skills who can come here on work visas for any job that companies can't find somebody local to do. I know people don't like that, but truth is, india and asia etc. figured this out a long time ago and educate their people rather strongly in these fields, and I've worked with some on work visas in network operations centers and they are VERY BRIGHT. They have the skills to do the job even if their command of the english language is sometimes not the best.
I've also worked in the telecom field with young people coming out of the military who were in communications.....these are people who can string a network out at even the most primitive desert outposts, so these are some rather savvy telecom people.
It worries me somewhat that both some Americans as well as young college kids may not realize the level of people they will be forced to "compete" with out there in the global marketplace. My suggestion is if looking into the computer field, find the most high-tech oriented education available, and proceed in that direction.
