i just got my joyetech evic in the mail, setup to charge for few hours. and suddenly i smelled like a electronics overheating smell (sorta a copper smell?) it filled my apartment, and i figured it must of been the evic. so i pulled it out the USB charger was hot but not very hot. it was sharing a plug with a lamp... so i relocated it in a diff room to see if it was emitting that smell stlll. after another hour it remained mostly warm and nothing out of the ordinary. but i could in fact smell the same aroma from the USB charger and confirms its the culprit. my unit has charged up now. im unsure if i should be worried something is wrong here?

Have you tried anything else on the USB charger, or tried a different charger? I plug mine into my laptop. I'd say if the charger smells bad, it probably is...

i didnt i may try an old phone on it, but im thinking it was overheating or if theres such a thing it was breaking in and emitted smell from heat? sheesh i have no idea lol

It sounds like that charger is bad, and probably unsafe to use. It is better to be safe and not use it anymore. A replacement can be had for less than $10.

I had an amp in my car that gave off a smell like that once. It worked fine so I kept using it while I saved up for a new one. Well less than a week later it caught on fire. Good thing I had just pulled in my driveway and could put it out right away. Moral of the story, never use burnt smelling electronics.

You could try the suggestion of plugging it into a laptop and see if it emits the smell, if not then it is most likely the wall plug. In all honesty I would contact the seller, no way I would pay over $100 for a kit and settle for a charger that I would not feel safe using. Should be under warranty, most vendors will do everything they can to take care of you.

The charger mentioned by kiwivap would do the trick, they also have a less expensive model on the same site that should work. XTAR is known to make good chargers, not a bad investment if you have the money at the moment, also not a bad idea to get another battery.

Wishing you the best with your new APV, and a Happy New Year to all.

the only thing on my mind here is how would i be able to pin it down to just the charger also, im thinking it could be maybe even the battery? or would the smell be from the evic unit then?

The smell usually sticks around on the faulty part. If you can still smell it on the charger it was probably the charger that was emitting the smell. If you get a smell from both the charger and the eVic the charger probably went bad and took the eVic with it. Most of the time these kits include the cheapest charger they can get there hands on just to throw in there. I have seen a ton of these usb wall adapter burn out that came with digital camera's, cell phones, MP3 players exc.
