First off, I know I got a lot of things off on this. I had to seriously dumb it down (and bend a few things, aka facts:( ). My instructor told me to shave off at least three pages, and I had to edit works cited (most regretfully, Baditude's blog!!)

I also had to make it simple enough so another student could reproduce the technique using only my instruction. He did everything correct except priming the carto. He didn't know how to judge what was a "drop". Handclaps for him for volunteering to handle everything without gloves (my other classmates refused to handle my e-juice).

Here is my paper.

How to Prime and Fill a Carto tank
For many adult smokers, the attempt to quit tobacco products has been a long, difficult challenge. Although there are many nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) currently on the market, including the “patch”, nicotine gum, lozenges, and prescription medications such as Chantix and Zyban, smokers still find it extremely difficult to quell their physical craving for nicotine. Recently, however, a new technological innovation in NRTs has given smokers new hope – the electronic cigarette. This device has changed the lives of countless smokers, whose testimonies can be found online on various web forums, such as the Electronic Cigarette Forum and Vapers Forum. Through the use of the electronic cigarette, and its various systems for nicotine delivery, thousands of former smokers have found a healthier alternative.
The electronic cigarette, also known as an “e-cig”, “vaporizer”, “advanced personal vaporizer (APV)”, “vape”, or “mod”, is an electronic device that uses a heating element to transform liquid nicotine into an inhalable vapor. The idea was first patented in 1965 by Herbert A. Gilbert. The patent created by Gilbert inspired Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik to create a similar device in 2000. Resembling a cigarette, Hon Lik’s device used miniaturized ultrasonics to vaporize a stream of liquid nicotine into a vapor that could be inhaled into the lungs.

Heaning 2
Since 2000, the electronic cigarette has been refined and redesigned. Newer models no longer need to resemble a cigarette, but instead can look like elongated tubes designed to hold rechargeable batteries and the circuitry necessary for the device to work. Cigarette look-a-likes, known among the vaping community as “cigalikes”, do still exist, and have improved in form and function since their introduction.
In its most basic form, an electronic cigarette consists of four components: the first is the battery. It is the part that provides power to the rest of the device. The second is the atomizer, which is the heating element that transforms the liquid nicotine into vapor. The third is liquid nicotine itself (called e-juice, or “juice” by most vapers). The fourth component is the delivery system, which acts as a vessel for the liquid nicotine and the atomizer.
People unfamiliar with electronic cigarettes often wonder what is in liquid nicotine, and how safe it is to consume. There is an immediate, easy answer for this question. Liquid nicotine sold for consumption by e-cig users consists of four readily identifiable, FDA-approved ingredients: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, liquid nicotine extracted from whole-leaf tobacco, and artificial or organic flavoring. Compare these four ingredients to the 4,000+ chemicals and carcinogens found in normal tobacco cigarettes. “Propylene glycol” and “vegetable glycerin” sound ominous to most people, but a simple glance at the ingredients in common household items, such as bath soap, toothpaste, and food additives, reveal the presence of either, or both, chemicals. Nicotine itself is no more dangerous to consume than caffeine. The artificial flavoring used in liquid nicotine is the very same used by candy and food processing facilities in the U.S.
Heaning 3
One of the first hurtles a new user will face when trying out electronic cigarettes is their battery life. For “cigalikes” like Blu and NJoy, the battery life is anywhere from an hour to 3 hours, depending on usage. New innovations, like Personal Charging Cases, or PCC’s, are able to extend the life of cigalikes by charging them when not in use. These PCCs are stylish and resemble popular smartphones. The second hurtle is the juice delivery system. For simplicity’s sake, these can be divided into four categories: cartomizers, clearomizers, dripping atomizers, and cartomizer tanks. Each delivery system works differently, but, when used correctly, results in the same thing: the production of vapor.
A cartomizer is a long stainless steel tube filled with cotton polyfill, similar to that in a Zippo lighter. Users drip their e-juice directly into the polyfill. The force of gravity pulls the juice down until the cartomizer is completely saturated. An atomizer coil inside the cartomizer heats the juice into vapor. Some users complain they can taste the polyfill, others say they do not.
A clearomizer is a plastic or glass tube with a center post containing cotton or silica wicks. The user pours the juice directly into the tube and screws a top cap back on. The wicks then soak up the juice and feed it to the atomizer, where it is then heated into vapor. With wicking systems, users complain they get “burnt” hits, where the vapor tastes like melted plastic. Users have to slosh the device around to make sure the wicks stay saturated.
A dripping atomizer is a bare-bones component. It is a very small metal tube with the coils exposed, with no filler or wicks. Users drip 2 to 4 drops of e-juice directly onto
Heaning 4
the coils, vapes several puffs, then drips another 2 to 4 drops. This process is repeated, and is called “direct dripping”. Almost all vapers agree that direct dripping is the most delicious way to taste your juice’s flavor, but it is impractical during a workday or while driving.
Cartomizer tanks are a combination of a cartomizer and a cylindrical tank, made of glass or plastic. The cartomizer slides up into the center of the tank; the tank is then filled with e-juice. A pre-drilled hole near the bottom of the cartomizer exposes the polyfill to the e-juice, keeping the polyfill constantly saturated.
Each vaper has his or her own preferred method of vaping, using one, or all, of these delivery systems. I prefer the cartomizer tank combo because it allows me to keep the cartomizer constantly soaked with e-juice. I can fill the tank in the morning, vape throughout the day, come home, vape at night, and only have to refill the tank again the next morning. The biggest complaint users have about cartomizer tanks is how to properly prime and fill them. In this paper I will show you how.
First, you will need 6 items:
1) A cartomizer with a hole punched near the base. These can either be bought pre-punched by laser in the factory, or you can use a simple punching tool offered online and punch the hole yourself..
2) A tank. These can either be glass or plastic. Pyrex glass and polycarbonate plastic are the usual materials used for tanks.
3) A “drip tip”. This is a small piece of metal or plastic you “plug” into the end of the cartomizer, shaped to match lips – you pull the vapor through this.
Heaning 5
4.) E-juice. This can be any ratio of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, liquid nicotine, and flavoring.
5) A tank refilling tool (not necessary, but recommended).
4) A battery. This is the actual “body” of the electronic cigarette.

To properly prime and fill a cartomizer tank, follow these steps:
1) Tilt the cartomizer at a slight angle.
2) Slowly (and patiently), drip up to 40 drops of juice into the polyfill in the cartomizer, twisting it between your fingers after each drop. Avoid the center air-hole at all costs.
3) After dripping 40 drops into the polyfill, shake the cartomizer like a thermometer. This will force any spare juice into the polyfill.
4) Snap the tank refilling tool onto the cartomizer like you would a drip tip. Insert the cartomizer into the bottom of the tank about halfway.
5) Slowly and carefully pour the juice into the top of the tank. Fill the tank ¾’s full. Next, push the cartomizer completely up into the tank.
6) Pop off the tank refilling tool, snap on your drip tip.
7) Let it sit and fully saturate for about 1 to 2 minutes.
8) Screw the cartomizer tank onto your battery, press the button, vape, and enjoy!

Heaning 6
Cartomizer tanks come with a steep learning curve. Once mastered, however, many frustrated e-cig users finally find their elusive “perfect vape”.
Opponents of electronic cigarettes argue that vapers aren’t truly quitting smoking – they’re just replacing one addiction with another. While this is true to some extent, it doesn’t address the very real fact that smokers who have switched to electronic cigarettes almost always notice an increase in their physical well being and an improvement in their quality of life.
Whether or not one chooses to explore the wonderful world of vaping, it is a fact: there is an option out there that could work for you, and is worth trying. Whether or not smokers decide to use cigalikes or more elaborate tube-shaped “mods”, and whatever delivery system they choose, the chances of quitting smoking or using tobacco products through electronic cigarettes is well worth the time and effort.

You're more adventurous than me. I just did a paper on zebras for ENG-111. Wanted to do Malthusianism but the databases (credo, etc) weren't sufficiently detailed.

Good read, though. Hopefully they demystified them for some of your class mates, even if they were too pansy to hold a bottle.

Hi Nicki,

When I first read the title of your post, I thought to myself " Oh crap, now people are posting their English composition papers on this forum".

However, after reading your paper, I was quite intrigued with the subject matter and would like to save it for future reference material.

With cigarette smoking becoming more unpopular, I would love to save it as a as a primer for people who might be interested in vaping. I believe it answers many of the questions people ask me when they see me vaping in public.

Heh. I'm Billy Heaning. Nicki is my instructor. ;) And thank you. It's in the public domain, now. Share it as much as you'd like.

Great paper! I think you did a great job explaining the process. As for the dope who couldn't understand what a drop is, you can't always account for idiocy. Sorry if that's harsh. lol Enjoy 101, i'm in 102 right now and they chose our topic: Religion in the 21st Century. On top of that the professor specified what each research paper has to be on this semester. Not looking forward to it. If I could write about vaping I would be working on it all the time. lol Happy vaping! :vapor:

Haha LilSweetie
How bout this approach in that paper:

Religion in the 21st century has turned from the worship of God to the worship of the material.

The faithful no longer attend religious services; instead, they pray at the electronic box located in their home.

Just an idea. I already passed English 102.

Vape on & good luck in school. :)
