So, I got a tank in the mail today and after looking at it and taking apart I figured I could build one similar to it pretty cheaply. For seven bucks I built two tanks, all parts and pieces were purchased at Lowes. These were made to use boge cartos with.
Materials-to build one tank
1 foot long section of flexible vinyl tubing with a 5/8 inside diameter (Plumbing department)
1 package of rubber grommets with a 5/8 inch outside diameter and 5/16 inch inside diameter (hardware)
1 package of #9 rubber o-rings Comes with ten o-rings (Plumbing)
Scissors
Boge Carto - I have a few pre-punched cartos laying around. Ther are plenty of methods and videos on how to punch your own
What I did-
I measured the vinyl tubing so that it was long enough that only about a 16th of an inch of the carto will stick out of the top. Then I put the rubber o-ring around the little groove inside of both of the grommets. You may have to work it a little in order to get it to sit neatly.
Then it's really just the simple process of putting it together. Place the rubber grommet around the threaded end of the carto until it sits flush and carefully work it into whichever end of your cut vinyl tubing. Next work the other grommet over the top of the carto and into the other end of the vinyl tubing. I put mine in until they were completely flush with the vinyl tubing.
In order to fill it I went with a method i saw on a youtube video about filling the Chibi tanks. I took a beveled edge needle and places it with the beveled edge towards the carto and very very carefully worked it down until it was inside the tank. I had some issues as the tank got full with juice leaking out of the bottom of the threaded end. But i contribute that to my impatience and pushing to hard on the syringe. If you aren't careful in this step you'll tear tiny little pieces of the grommet and they will get down into the tank.
You can probably fill it up before you work that top grommet all the way down, but you'll need to be careful to not spill it.
And there you have it. My 4 dollar boge tank!
Pros (as I see them)
Easy to make.
Cheaper than anything on the market
No leaking
I like the flexible vinyl tubing beause you can squeze it a little to force juice up in the carto.
Cons -
Certainly not the sexiest tank ever made
A little bit of a pain to fill, need a syringe and some care
A quick internet search and i found a plastic vendor that sells different types of round tubing that would work. But i wanted a tank now. I'm going to order some in the next week or so and see how that goes, I just have to find one i like.
Hope this helps someone that wants to try making a simple tank without much hassle.
