Well, I just took the plunge and built my first coil for my Phoenix v10... and it came out quite well! 12-14 wraps 30g kanthal around 3mm silica (micro-coil) gave me 1.5 ohms on the dual coil setup. This thing hits llike a tank! First tried it on my K100 mech... WOW, that's good! Then I put it on my Tesla and bumped it up to 12 watts... REALLY WOW! Talk about clouds AND flavor! And for all you old hands out there, I did everything safe! Watched hours of videos about building coils, checked it on the meter first, then on a mech with a fairly depleted battery. Actually, my first try at wrapping a coil was something like 6-7 wraps of the 30g... that came out to .6 ohms! And that was just the single coil! 2 of them would have been quite dangerous!

I just want to say 'Thanks' to everybody out there who posts all the helpful information. Too numerous to try to name everybody.

Next try... Got an RSST to try to build... my first Genny. And going to try to rebuild a ProTank coil... I just can't get a good hit from my 2 mini's.

Thanks again, and vape On! Oh... Merry Christmas!:vapor:

LOL! Thanks! Already got the organic cotton balls... wanted to try silica first. If I can tease the silica out of the coils in a couple of days, I'll try some of the cotton. Also have a new Phoenix v4 single coil RBA to try. MUST drill out the air hole first! couldn't even draw on it with it empty! Same with the RSST. First order of business tomorrow when I get to work!

UPDATE: Just built my first ProTank coils! First try came out to 2.1 ohms... Was shooting for 1.5 - 2.0, but it was pretty! So... backed off the number of wraps from 8 down to 6 (30g kanthal around 2mm silica), and PERFECT! 1.5 ohms! I think the most difficult part of the build was trying not to mangle the silica while getting the rubber insulator grommet back in place! So... I was wrapping using a sewing needle to help support the silica, so after annealing the finished coil I pul the needle back thru the coil to support it in the wick notch of the base, and voila! Success! And the hit!!! Now I can see why people love the ProTanks! With my new coils I get good flavor, vapor, TH... the whole shebang!IMAG0146.jpgIMAG0145.jpg

UPDATE: Well, one more build style under my belt... just built my first Genny... for my new RSST. Again, 30g (all I have at the moment!) with 400 SS mesh. 5 wraps and comes out to 1.7 ohms. Next wrap gonna back down to 4 wraps... looking for 1.5 ohms. Got the tank filled with Jameson's Amelia... Tasting pretty good at 10 watts! I think the hardest (or at least most time consuming) part was oxidizing the SS mesh... what a pain!

StrikeIII - The different gauge or size Kanthal gives different resistance. The higher the gauge number, the smaller the diameter of the wire, the greater resistance over a given length of wire. So... if you have a 3" piece of 34g kanthal it may have a resistance rating of 3 ohms, and the same length of 28 gauge may be 1.5 ohms of resistance. These numbers are not real... I just used them as an example! PBusardo has some good charts and links on his website: Taste Your Juice | Charts & Tools that goes into more exact detail. The resistance wire calculator requires that you have Excel or an equivalent on your computer.
