I made several attempts last night, all of which worked, but I wasn't pleased with. Either the coil wasn't pretty enough, or the resistance was significantly higher than I wanted.

Today I did @ 7 wraps of 32 gauge kanthal. This time I used the little blue screw driver that came with my Igo as apposed to a 3/64's drill bit I had been using. I wrapped as tightly as I could, then removed the coil, clamped it lightly with my needle nose pliers, then torched it with my wife's creme brulee torch to tighten the coils up.

What I ended up with was a coil that ohmed out at 2.5 ohms. I wicked it with natural (not organic) cotton (still working on technique with this part) and thus far, the flavor and vapor from it has been fantastic.

A few photos of what I built....

The coil:

On the meter: leads measured .3 ohms, so coil came out to 2.5 ohms. My SVD confirmed.

Feedback appreciated!

Va, you could try dropping it to 1/16" inside diameter. 30 ga, approx 10 wraps should put ya on target :)

Nice lookin coil bro :)

Thanks!

And another thank you for answering the question I hadn't bothered to ask yet. The larger diameter is my resistance problem. I was unclear on how small to go. I will use your advice on my next attempt.

Just finished building a coil as you suggested. One word: Wow. Flavor is intense. I couldn't be more pleased.

I have another newb question for you. I ohm'ed the coil before firing it and I got 1.9 ohms. After firing it, it's now reading 1.5. Is that pretty typical?

Very nice looking coil indeed.

If you're using 32 gauge, I'd suggest trying a duel wire or parallel wire coil. Just cut a 6 inch piece, fold it at the half way point, and wrap the two wires side by side as if you're wrapping one wire. About 8 wraps at 1/16th id should land you close to what you're aiming for. The advantage is a longer coil that covers more wick for better vapor and flavor imo.

You could also experiment with longer legs to get the coil out closer to the air hole to see which you like better.

On your question about the ohms changing, I don't usually don't see more that a tenth of change. Sounds like you might not of had a solid connection on the first reading.

Check your screws to make sure their tight as a precaution. I've never checked resistance after Ive mounted and fired a coil so dunno :)

Coil position in relation to the airhole / posts / deck plays a significant part in how a setup vapes, particularly in terms of TH. Here's a short video I made on the basics of these elements. Note, the rba is slightly different but the exact same principals apply:

Thank you for posting this link to your vids, it is exactly what I needed! Plan to order an Igo-L later this week, and I really want to try micro coils when I get it, so this is perfect! .. and thanks to the OP of this thread too :)

My IGO-l has a nice 28g 1.4 ohm micro.. thing is rock solid and vapes awesome.

One of the best things about microcoils is the durability... once you get a good one, it'll last a long time... the thicker wire holds up well to all those heat cycles.

The coil in there now it's going on week four and the resistance is holding the same as the first fire.

This is exactly what I'm hoping for with my last coil that I made. Admittedly, I love to tinker with this stuff, but I can't do it on a daily basis. So even if I got a couple of weeks out of it, I'd be more than satisfied with it. I've re-wicked it a couple of times already and it keeps going strong. Roll a new wick and a quick dry burn, and she's good to go!
