hi everyone,
I’m new here so if this is the right place I am sorry and please move it to the right place.
I am using an iJoy Captain PD270 with a SMOK Big Baby Beast tank and the Baby RDA deck with dual SS316L coil installed on it. The aim was to try TC Mode, and I’ve been having issues. My juice is 93% VG and my resistance is 0.234, and I seem to be having a burning taste after two seconds per each puff.
Originally I thought it was because of the cotton and my juice being to thick, so I used half the amount of cotton I used originally and I still have the same problem.

I tried everything from lowering the temperature to 149C/300F and up while doing changing my wattage from 85 to 5 to try and find a setting where I wouldn’t get that burn, but nothing worked.

I also tried to lock the resistance, which iJoy claims to be a gauge but others claim to be a lock by pressing both the -/+ buttons together. If anyone knows any better please let me know.

Apparently my build is good and my wick is fine because I do alright in Power Mode. I am not sure what else to do or if this can be fixed. Maybe my mod is faulty at temp control?

Any help is greatly appreciated. And feel free to school me!

Thanks!

Along with untar's suggestions. A working build for power mode sadly doesn't mean it will work for TC. TC works by detecting the resistance change as coil(s) heat up. This change needs to be consistent and accurate. i.e. your build has to be perfect.
- space your coils (guarantees even heat up for a single coil)
- use single coils (dual requires your two coils are identical resistance - even power through the two)
You can do dual contact, but its harder (and personally not worth the effort)
So try it out on a single coil rda first if you have one? Easier to play on that.

A few things to check
-is your wire clean? (take a piece of wire from your spool and wipe it with a white paper tissue)
-did you select the correct material?
-have you tried setting the TCR manually (if possible)? 316L has a range of about 94-100, dual coil may be slightly higher.

Thanks for your reply!
The coil was clean, this issue has started from the get go. When I rewicked I went ahead and ran a sheet tissue just to see and it was clean.
I contacted my vape shop and they told me to cool the tank off and then set the temperature when it’s cool, which is what the iJoy manual recommended as well, they called it “calibration” and I did just that. The thing was, however, on my Coil Master 521 Mini V2 the resistance is showing one thing and actually changes every time I unscrew and screw the tank on. But the iJoy remains going strong at the 0.234 and the range.
I did what they asked, however, and it worked like a charm for all of 3 minutes, then went back to burning.

I also made sure that I chose the right material, twice with the spool and the mod setting. I also adhered to your advice to change the TCR setting manually, set it at 0.00100, and still the same issue.

Thanks a lot, I have the Cloud King by SMOK along with the V12-RBA-T and that can support a single build, so I’ll try it out. Or I’ll just return to the shop that made the build for me and taught me how to build.

I have the same mod, and in all honesty, it's great for power mode, but that's about it. iJoy is terrible at temp control in general. Sad, but true.
I have a Therion 75c. That works beautifully. I had an eLeaf Pico, that was also ok, not as good as the Therion, but still massively superior to the iJoy. So I do have a basis for comparison...

Thanks so much for your $0.02, I was suspecting that my mod is messing up because the guy who made the coil and taught me how to do it seemed to know his stuff really well. I really didn’t want to buy another mod, but I guess now I have to.

Why?

If it vapes good in power mode, why not just roll with it?

So I’m really into flavour and can’t seem to get enough of it and I really wanted to control the temperature because when this peculiar mode works, the flavour is amazing and the vape is cool, so that’s my thinking, I would get a new mod to pull this off.

But maybe you’re right, I should just stick with it and wait for it to fail.

If you do, don't get another iJoy, and don't get a Smok mod because they don't do TC very well, either.

Companies with mods that do Temperature Control reasonably well:
  • Anything with a DNA chipset
  • Anything with a YiHi chipset
  • Anything with a JoyeTech chipset
  • Smoant
  • Think Vape
  • Tesla
  • Vaporesso
  • Voopoo
You have to ask about the first three because those chipsets go in mods made under several different names.

The Smoant Battlestar and Battlestar Mini are two viable options for you. Both are well made (the mini has minor cosmetic issues). The big one is a two battery mod and can be had under $50. The mini is single sell and can be had under $40.

Not a bad idea.
Save up in the meantime, and when you're ready, grab a DNAc or Yihi chip mod, with whatever the newest iteration is then, can't go wrong either way honestly.

Thank you so much! What tank would you recommend? I like the versatility of the SMOK but I will look for something else if you folks recommend it.

Thanks a lot for your input!
It’s amazing how much there is to know about vaping. I switched into vaping a few months back, and I thought I had it figured out, and now it feels like a whole new experience. I don’t want to get into the habit of just spending money. I have invested some, and I’m prepared to invest more to just get what I can settle for, but don’t want to keep buying stuff lol. I have to justify this and with my electronics fetish lol, it will be hard.

Not too long ago I was in your shoes...
Got my Therion, and now I am exactly where I wanted to be, only took me a few grand to figure it out, lol.
Still cheaper than stinkies by a long shot.
And the exact reason I'm suggesting a DNA or Yihi chip. Save yourself money if you want endgame quality and get something with a DNA 250c chip or whichever is the newest iteration of the Yihi.
Only thing that may be better would be Dicodes, but that's a whole different level of expensive...

Hahaha that’s the sad part I guess. I wasn’t a smoker I was just smoking shisha/hookah and really wanted to have something tasting better and gives me my nicotine fix without burning the carpet or having to run around fixing it to my liking. I had quite the setup. I think I’m just gonna go and see how much I can get it for.

That's up to you. I'm just saying since they're SS coils you can run them in power mode if you want to.

Yes you are right, SS has that feature. I bought some Ni200 and Ti coils as well just for the temp control, I’m chasing that flavour as hard as I can lol. I even got into DIY eJuice just for that flavour.

I was really heading towards the TC, and naively thought that every mod can pull it off.
I generally don't vape temp, but I tossed a NI200 build on an atty yesterday. Put it on 3 different mods and had to set different temps on all 3. The VooPoo Drag did ok with it, DNA250 was much better though.
