Say you're on a road trip, and find your smoke dies.
Stop at any handy truck stop, convience store, etc buy a pack of cheap AA's and your good until you can recharge.

1. It's not AA but AAA size battery in this mode
2. Regular AAA does not have enough Voltage/Power and capacity to efficiently heat the atomizer coil

Ichaya:
That won't work. Regular AAA batteries only give you 1.5 volts. The Lithium batteries put out 3.7. With regular AAAs you wouldn't get any vapor.

So if you were to go with a 2 AA battery flashlight as a starter, you would then be generating 3V, and that would work?
Possibly even find a 3 AA design.

Does anyone know what is the minimum voltage required?

Yeah I know you could replace the heater coild inside the atomizer with wires of various sizes, and electrical resistance to make any combo work, but I don't want to redesign the entire device.

I'm just tired of running into battery recharge issues.

Was wondering because I have seen 3 AAA, and AA flashlights being sold at cheap places.

Only they aren't in a straight line they are side by side.

Thought these might make an emergency backup.

Here was the thought. If you have a li-ion powered triple battery vap.
1 - 2 live batteries with a conductive filler for the third.

You are on the road someplace, and it dies on you.
You could stop in any cheap place, and buy 3 batteries, drop them in, and you could vap for a while, until you had a chance to re-charge yours.

Is this even possible?

Hi SuperSteph!

Just curious, how do you keep from going under 2.5v on the 10440 (safe zone) ?

One member has the sig "elephant in the room". Maby its just me Because i work with electricity every day. Fact is : It takes 3v or more to produce vapor. So it would make since that you would never hit the under volt protection. Unless you hold down your manual switch after vapor production has stopped. or god forbid you drop your manual switch in your recliner. Makes the atomiser taste like crap. Glad i didnt fall asleep.
Death by recliner!

I have a 901 flashlight mod. The $3.00 flex head version bought at big lots in the usa. It came with the 3x aaa cartrage. i moded it for a 18650 battery and a 3amp RS push button momentary switch. 2400 mah protected battery goes for a bout 2 days of heavy vaping. Your post made me curious so i put the cartrage in it and no go. I guess the alkaline bats cant handle the current out put. If travel is your main concern then the magnums that use the cr123 cells are your best bet they are used in alot of cameras.
But consider this; I bought 4 18650(laptop batts) batteries and a universal charger for <$20.00 US from dealtime extreme. So i could travel for a week easy without a charger. But dont go close to an airport with a device that looks like a dedman switch.
Your videos have been great help in deciding what kind of devices to use. of course since ive been moding i only need fluid atomisers and carts.

OK before I saw that anyone had made one of these I was showing off my work in progress 18650 flashlight mod at work and saw a co-workers maglite solitaire hanging on his neck. next day I bought one and stated playing with it. I'm glade to see how someone else has done it before I went to far. I'm wanting to try and make a manual and an automatic version of these. But I want to try and leave the original on off feature for when it is in my pocket as I've already burnt up an atty that way. I'll post more when I get further along. My auto version will be a 510 atty and the manual will be interchangeable between 510, 801, and 901. although my current design has it coming out longer then yours I think I will live with that since the connector will be interchangeable.

Thanks for the link Pardiso.

And as for using regular AAA Batteries I tried with my flashlight mod and was able to get a few weak puffs. But if it's travel your worried about why not just get a pass-through and a usb car charger and vape on the road all day long.

I have two of these...
The first one I drilled out and pressed a battery connector into the end where the bulb is. Exactly like you did.
The second I left the twist switch in tact and soldered some wire onto the push button leads (so that it will plug into where the bulb used to). Then drilled and tapped the end cap for the atty. Used a spring from an old ink pen and some shrink wrap for the positive lead connector for the atty connection. So it has a push button and an on/off switch too. Battery life is good but not as good as I had hoped.

Respects

I wasn't shooting for an extra large battery life, just something better than stock. I would say this is about twice as good as a stock battery

I think with a little more work I could make a better switch, Though I'd probably need a lathe or something. I really wanted to keep it simple so It's interesting to see other simple mods.

I just checked this on a 3-AAA light I have around, and the damned thing is 24mm inside. One lousy millimeter from fitting. Maybe next time I'm running around places with lots of cheap flashlights I'll take the calipers with me and see if one of them runs just a bit bigger, or has some kind of sleeve inside I can tear out.

OK my mini mag is coming along well except I haven't gotten the manual switch put together yet and I'm having trouble finding springs for the adapter. If anybody knows of a good place to get springs please let me know. I do have a few that may work but there not exactly what I'm looking for.

and as for a 3AAA battery flash light mod I was able to get an 18650 in there with out too much trouble and have to say I've only been using it for a couple of days now but this thing rocks. now if I can just find a paint that will stick to jb weld I'll be good on that one.

ok I had this working but with an ugly switch setup so I got the right parts to redo it like this one but have one main problem. I can't see how I'm supposed to keep the end cap still while I drill it out. I don't have a drill press although I can get access to one if need be. Although I don't think this is my problem as even with a drill press I'll still need a way to keep the end cap from moving while I drill. As it costs me 5$ each time I mess one up I hope someone has some advice on this before I try again.

And on the none rechargable battries I just picked up a set of sf123a's for 5$ at lowes and they seem to work very well in my 18650 detonator style flashlight mod.

OK I did a little thinking and figured out an easy way to keep from having to drill the end cap out so large. Rather then using a 1/4 drill bit to drill out the whole end cap. I instead used a 13/64 drill bit just to drill out the very bottom of the end cap. Then I just used my dremel with a grinder attachment to make the rivet head smaller till it fit easily into the 13/64 slot. The drill bit I used is a Dewalt Pilot Point bit. The advantage to this bit is you can just drill down till a hole starts to come through the other side then you just need to drill that hole out a little with a 1/8 drill bit. as I was able to do all this with out clamping the end cap, I didn't scuff the paint job at all.

This method won't work with wider springs as they require a wider channel to fit in.

And thanks to SuperSteph for this great mod

I loved this mod when I first saw it, but didn't want to do it with unprotected batts. Now that they are readily available and the solitaires are dirt cheap, it was time.
Dan did it with an RCA adaptor switch, wow, that's easy. But I prefer a tail switch.
So just some tips..
Steph's switch works great but with protected batteries, you need more space.
I had to trim the cap down to the threads.
I used a 401 batt connector which threaded in pretty easily instead of a "fender washer".
I also wrapped a strip of aluminum foil around the threads to get good contact.
Put it on a dog tag chain and haven't used anything else today!

Hi,

Im new to vaping. Been doing it for about a month now.

I bought a dinky volcano starter kit, but being a geek that I am, I started thinking about "improvements" the first day I started vaping. It was only after I started fiddling about with an old Maglite solitaire in my desk drawer, when a buddy pointed me to this forum.

Im kind of sad to see that my "Idea" has been thought and done for a long time now, but I want to say that I've reach all my conclusions independently.

Anyways, here is what I've done to my Solitaire.
