I really don't want to drill a hole in my Reo. Would sanding the coating away from where the spring attaches and maybe trying to find a brass hot spring sorta do the same thing?
Robert - is there coating on the inside where the 510 connector is pressed in or do you remove that?
I would think that you would have to follow the current and clear all contact points of the anodizing to maximize the performance difference.

not the SAME thing, but it will improve it some .2 to .3 Volts
Sand the are below the hotspring, and certainly a brass hotspring will work better (if there are any, not aware)
also, a thicker screw connecting the hotspring will help as well, it's a matter of widening a bit the hole you already have
And if you were to put a small washer & nut, and tight real well, you would get even better results
