I started a "vaping" trend amongst people I know. I of course, have started vaping. I got two friends into vaping, my wife (a very occasional smoker) is now an occasional vaper. Next up....my parents.

I ordered a few supplies to get them started. My dad is pretty excited about it. I've had them try it out. They have both smoked heavily for many years. My dad had no problems with a manual or automatic Joye 510.

My mother...different story. She can't seem to hit the PV properly. The manual 510 is easier to start with so I gave her that. She hits it for long enough and either gets nothing or ends up coughing. Now, I love my mother and hate to bash her on a random internet forum but there are a few possible factors here. First....she is lazy. She doesn't do much but sit around the house and talk on the phone/have company and smoke. She doesn't work and she her idea of exercise is going to the store to buy more cigarettes. Her lungs are in bad shape. Is it possible that she doesn't have the lung capacity to vape properly?

Note that I am using cartridges with straw mods and have let her try on attys and batteries that are working well. I'll sit there and belch out a cloud of vapor that would make someone hitting a water .... impressed.

The other issue is that my mom is well....not the brightest knife in the drawer. She may be doing it wrong. Is there some way I can describe how she should be doing this?

Does anyone have any stories about their own difficulties or the difficulties they saw in others when starting to vape?

I know what you mean. How hard can this be? I went through it with a friends mom.
- Does she really want to quit smoking? She might get interested if you dad takes to it for awhile and she sees how much he's saving on smokes.
- What color is it? She probably wants it to look needs a cigarette... for a week.

-Does she understand that it doesn't draw like a cigarette? Though I think the 510 has a faster hit than most of the others. Sometimes nice, sometimes really harsh.
-Maybe if you get her to just puff. Don't inhale, just puff, so she gets the feel for the function of it.
-Then teach her to take a "primer puff" before she inhales.
-The 510 is also slightly larger in diameter than a cigarette. You might try a whistle tip mouthpiece on it. I just put an 801 tip on mine to see if it would fit, and I like the draw better.
Best of luck to you.

Sometimes, people simply aren't ready to give up their cigs. You can't force it. I have been working with my best friend for about 7 months, and she is just not ready. I had to realize that it has to be on HER terms, not mine.
Maybe read up on snus and have her try that. It sure seems to add to the success of people who can't quit just using the ecig.
Good luck. You are doing a good thing.

While a 510 is great for most of us, an 808D1 is really a good choice for a new vaper. My brother left one cartomizer with me and it is simply great. It has an easier draw than a 901 or 510 and I think would be much easier for your mother to use. Might be worth ordering an adapter and cartomizers for her.

vouch. 808 would be much easier for her to use. she doesn't have to bother dripping, refilling, cleaning out, etc.

Just thinking about your problem and possible ideas...

What "flavor" e-liquid is she using? Maybe something sweet, tasty or aromatic similar to one of her favorite desserts or snacks might be more enjoyable for her? It also may be less "harsh" on her throat?

There are some pretty tasty e-liquids out there that she may really like. Heck, get several "flavors" and have a "tasting party"...

If she is a long time heavy smoker, the concept of the "long slow draw" technique is very foreign to her. Maybe vape with her and have her mimic you. I taught someone who was having the same problem by doing this. I take a long (4 to 5 second) draw into my mouth, then inhale it. I know a lot of people do the "direct inhale to the lungs" draw, but I haven't mastered it. I was a heavy smoker, but I didn't "direct inhale" even when I smoked. I figured that out when trying to teach someone to "vape". (just a thought ??)

A lot of people cough when they are getting used to vaping... it's a completely different "feel" compared to cigarettes. It sounds counter-intuitive because cigarette smoke is so harsh, but we coughed when we took our first drags on ciggies... it's just a matter of adjusting.

If you already have the 510 gear, why start spending more money on different models, etc.? I don't know, that's just how I think... maybe if you all encourage her and tell her you have confidence in her it may go a long way in boosting her confidence.

Patience, encouragement and a positive "fun" approach goes a long way when trying to teach "an old dog new tricks" (sorry I honestly mean no disrespect to your mom by using that phrase) - it works the same when trying to teach a new skill to children as well as adults and even the elderly... ( I am putting my foot in my mouth here and shoving it deeper with each sentence - lol - as I don't know how old your mom is...)

Maybe if you all treat it like a "toy", a "new hobby" or a "fun gadget" and take any pressure, expectations or pre-conceived notions about her abilities (or lack thereof) out of the equation, she'll catch on and join the party :)

    Just some thoughts :)

    Wow. Lots of responses.

I don't know how it ended up in "Health and Safety". My fault.

Maybe I'll have to try a different model for her. I was hoping not, simply because the rest of us will be using 510s. Easier to swap/loan parts and such.

It is odd how explaining the longer slower draw is actually difficult.

Remie - You just made me realize something about myself. When I smoke regular cigarettes I drag and then inhale, just as you said. I don't directly inhale. Obviously, that behavior transferred over to Vaping as well. Maybe that is why I can't explain it properly to her. She won't be using anything fruity though. For this to work it will have to be very similar to an actual smoking experience for her.

Katmar - She wants to give up smoking but had given up on the idea until I showed her the E-Cigarette. She immediately thought it was something she could get on board with. It has been fun getting my friends/relatives into this. Everyone thought I was a bit strange when I first started it out but they were curious. Now it is like a little club.

Carnage, she would prefer something close to a non-menthol tobacco experience?

A friend on here is trying to get her Dad switched over to a 510. I suggested a smoke-juice that I personally love, and when she got it for him, he loved it, and it's made him rethink the potential of it all. I can tell you what it is if you think it may be worth a shot? It would be great to get your mom on board... I'd be willing to send you a sample if you think it may help!

Having a "club" like that is awesome - you can all have fun while you support and encourage each other.

You don't direct regular smokes either? I am not the only one! lol! Maybe that is part of it for her.... maybe that is why even though I vape 24mg it never made me cough, not even the first time I tried it. That, or I am just immune

Thats the good thing about new developments. All you need to do is spend a couple of dollars on a 510 to 808 adapter and 5 cartomizers for about 7 dollars. A total of 9 bucks and 3 or 4 for shipping and you can try any ecig you want. Toss in a 901 atty (the 901 uses the same 510 adapter as the 808) and you can try all the top e-cigs. 5x 510-901 silver adapter(510 bat to 901 at) - E-cig Multi Adapters - Wholesale & Retail Best E-smoking Supplier That url is for a 5 pack of adapters. If you search they also have single adapters.
