I am currently rocking a 3 D cell MagLite. It is quite a heavy thing and would be useful for various things I may need to do to an intruder. I had considered buying something that puts out much more light over a wider area and that is what got me posting in this thread.

What would you recommend for a newbie light guy that just wants something that can throw lots of light for quite a bit of distance? I have a neighbor that likes to go outside and fire off a few rounds on occasion. I have no problem with people owning guns but when you fire them off in your backyard in a typical American neighborhood just feet from where my kids sleep I take exception.

I would love to be able to light him up every time it happens. I have called the cops every time it happens but there is nothing they can do unless they catch him doing it. It is not too often that he does it but once is too often when my kids are involved.

It will all depend what you want to spend. Bear in mind these lights run on lithium ion batteries.. Fenix makes a few that will run alkaline Batteries.
$30-$50
1. Skyray King ( Multiple emitter ) Flooder
2. HD 2010 ( Single emitter ) Thrower
$50 & UP
1. BTU SHocker ( M.E ) F
2. TN31 ( S.E ) T
3. TN30 (M.E ) F
4. Trustfire X6 ( S.E ) T
5. TK70 ( M.E ) F... this one can use standard batteries & due to Fenix coming out with the TK75..( The price has dropped to very reasonable ) I have one and its a freaking wall of light... I like it because my wife can use it with no fear of a problem with batteries

I've always demanded a certain level of illumination in a flashlight. It started when I began to go camping as a Boy Scout (many years ago). I had a double mantle propane lantern that allowed me to insert a new cylinder when others were pouring white gas into their Coleman lanterns and pump, pump, pumping up the pressure tank and fiddle with the mantle cleanout from time to time.

I carried a 6 volt sealed beam back then. It was heavy, but the brightest flashlight in the bunch with a large lens. These days I carry a 6AAA cell halogen flashlight sold at Sears. It's not an extremely bright flashlight at 170 lumens, but it can get 14 hours from 6 AAA alkalines on the low setting, which is barely less illumination than the high setting, and 8 hours on high. It's around $50 regular price and much cheaper at $35 on sale. The price has dropped since I bought mine. It's enough to flash the yard brightly and put a bright spot on anything, then slip back into a pocket.

Kelevra, what's your recommendation for the brightest, well made 18650 pocket sized flashlight under $100?

I have this one as my EDC mainly at work. The NiteCore MH2A:

It charges by USB and to me thats awesome. I can always charge it at work to be ready. I mainly have MagLites, but this NiteCore beats em' all. I could easily become a flashlight collector, but have curbed the desire. I'm jelous, lol.
