Well my precious black chrome, blue led went up in smoke this morning.... Literally!!! Almost got to work, went to get a vape... nothing.... looked at it, no lights. I started to unscrew the endcap and poof... a cloud of electrical smoke hit me in the face! mod got super hot, battery was VERY hot! Threw the batt out the window, thinking that it may possibly explode. I would rather it blow up on the side of the road than in my truck!

Just curious was this the first vape after the battery being on the charger?

Sorry to hear about the problem. Sounds like a bad battery, something we don't see very often with the AW batteries. Also sounds like the internal protection shutdown things in time to save the device and it's good you tossed the battery! If you want to email us we can arrange to checkout the device and get you a replacement battery..

Does the spring included with both versions of the endcap actually collapse in an excessive heat situation? I don't see this documented on the site at all, or in the instruction manual. I'm unsure which spring version I have (I know a different one was used after the first release), but I'm only curious, it isn't a necessity.

I'm still staying up till midnight to buy a black satin - blue LED though, even took off work so I could do it :D

I heard in Texas we are going to have to stay up till 2am! I think it's Midnight Pacific Time? Because they are in Washington State. Haven't seen this confirmed anywhere, but it's not technically midnight on the site till 2am Central, and 3am Eastern.

Yup, 2AM is 12AM PDT. I think I'll take a nap when I get home from work, if the kiddos let me :vapor:

You said the battery was sitting in your cupholder .Was this in direct sunlight ? Also when was it sitting in your cup holder since you said you were vaping it for a hour correct? Did you check the battery voltage when you took it off the charger or when you put it in the Provari?

The Provari has a lot of safety backups to prevent this from happening so id have to say there was a big issue with the battery. This is the first i heard of a Red label AW IMR venting. I highly doubt there was a problem with the Provari though especially since it still works fine.

I've seen a 1600mAh AW IMR 18650 vent before. The guy had it bare in his pocket with his keys, lol. There was a poof noise and he started freaking out, I didn't know what was going on. Of course it got really hot. Apparently the residue shows up on TSA pornoscanners (I'd just throw away that pair of pants...). He survived without injury.

Glad you and your ProVari are alright!

Ya' wanna' share how to check that internal resistance with us? I think most of us can check the voltage with a DMM, but how do we check internal resistance?

Here is the newer type of meter that I purchased to check internal resistance, this makes it easier then using a regular volt/ohm meter and doing the math, you can buy one here or I saw a cheaper version on ebay but this is the one I just ordered a few days ago = VOLTMETER OF INTERNAL BATTERY RESISTANCE SM8124 - www.scannerobd2.com

IMO it sounds like the IMR battery did exactly what it's supposed to do. It vented, but it didn't forcefully explode. If anything I think this is a positive real world case for 'safe chemistry' batteries. What if the failed battery had been a standard unprotected Li-ion or a protected Li-ion where the battery protection failed? I doubt we'd be hearing about how the battery was tossed harmlessly away. This was pretty much a worst case scenario and the OP and his device both walked away no problem.

If the user removes the battery (this case), or the pv has its own decent vents, life is good. A battery venting within an unvented pv would not be so good, unless imr not only vents slower but doesn't vent much.

hello all,on a non-provape device had a fire in my hands kinda problem with the first push of the button on(brand new mod) stacked batteries.smoke fire and overall mayhem was the issue at hand, would not wish that on anyone.Batteries are quite dangerous as I learned way too late, that was the "It "mod of the time and I still use the replacement sometimes. Its great that places like provape have the safety features .The act of placing anything that could go boom next to all of us should be considered when buying or using anything.Glad all is well and hope it helps others.

I dont think stacked batts is the main reason those mods could vent . Its more that stacked batt mods usually use small batterys that cant handle the current draw . A 16340 battery is not capable to produce enough amps for a ecig expecially when you try to run a LR atty on it. Stacking 2 18650 batts is much less of a issue.

Seen a few new post on this thread. Just to let everyone know the provari is still going strong. When I got home I pulled the spring out of the original end cap, put it on the 18650 cap, got three new batts in rotation and haven't had a problem since!
