Nautilus burns after refilling liquid

Hi guys, I'm new to the site. I've been vaping on and off for about a year now---I love it, and the only reason I ever get off of it is due to my equipment failing. I've spent an embarrassing amount of money of tanks, coils, and batteries, trying to find something that I like and that works well. The people at the shops I'm going to are giving me contradictory and inaccurate information a lot of the time, I think. Maybe they just want to make a sale?

So this is my question: After going through many tanks, I've finally gotten a Nautilus with the 1.8 coils, and I'm using a variable voltage battery with my voltage set around 4-4.8 most of the time, and I use the same liquid all of the time (vanilla bourbon flavor 35VG/65PG). It works really well and I like it, but whenever I need to add liquid to the tank, afterwards, I get a horrible burning taste. My tank and coil will be working well and tasting great, the coil will only be a couple of days old, but once I've added the liquid and put it back together, it burns. I've tried letting it sit for a couple of minutes upright to let the liquid seep into the wick again; I've tried putting the voltage down low to 3.3-3.6 and taking small puffs, but this is still happening. I've bought a new battery (an itaste VV) and it still happens (though I don't think the battery was/is the problem anyways.)

Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know what I can/should be doing? I've not had this problem with other tanks. I end up just changing the coil every time I refill, now, which means I'm changing my coil A LOT every other day sometimes, and that helps the burning taste go away. I've saved the old coils in case there's some way to clean and reuse them--because I don't think they should be going bad so quickly---especially since they're working perfectly fine until I add new liquid. I've seen that you can clean them in hot water or alcohol but I don't know how. And would that be a way to get the burning taste out of them or just for if I wanted to change flavors?

I dunno about the full size, but perhaps you are letting the tank get too low? I have heard the original Nautilus is horrible on that. If you don't KEEP it topped up, it sucks.

Let the "burned" coil sit overnight in a full tank. It usually cures the burned problem for me on my other tanks. The mini with the BVC coil has no issues with this. But I have heard of the old BDCs being a problem.

Best of luck.

Better yet, get BVC coils the next time you get replacements, if you don't already get them. The early Nautilus came with BDC, and your store may still have some in the pack to unload. Don't even screw with BDC (dual coil). Insist on the vertical coils. (BVC). If they don't have them, find someone who does.

ALSO, just as a benchmark: I run my BVC on 3.5-3.8v and 8 watts. Vapes like a champ all day.

This is an interesting problem. After filling, take some un-powered primer puffs ... although this honestly shouldn't be happening. The particular juice you're using could be gunking up the coils--original Aspire coils are prone to this. Try the new Aspire BVC coils, which have better performance/flavor and much longer life. A 5-pack on Vape Happy goes for $9.99

I had this same problem with my Nautilus mini and I found out it came from over filling it. The juice would go down near the drip tip and I would get the same result. What I ended up doing was taking all apart sitting the coil aside and washing every other piece. Then I let it sit for a while to let it dry then put the coil back and then I was back in business. If you do wash it make sure you don't get the coil wet!

Iv not messed with Nauty yet (probly never will, but thats just me), so I may be shooting blanks here. But you might try priming the coil by putting no more then one or two drops directly down the pipe after you refill, and letting that seep in for a minute or so.

Just a suggestion that may or may not be worth trying, :?)

same thing happened to me a few times. i started blowing into the drip tip and pushing the smoke out the airhole, take a few small drags then it comes back to regular flavour.

to me, its like some juice finds its way to pool somewhere and it ignites and 'smokes' instead of being vaperized and heated into vaper.i do not know if this is accurate or if thats even possible, but that be my guess.all i know is, it tastes abesolutely terrible when it happens

The burning taste can happen with most attys, Kanger, Aspire even the Kayfun if overfilled .... I know! LOL I am a lazy sot and try to fill it as much as I can to avoid havign to refill. basically, any atty that relies on a certain amount of vacuum can be affected. Usually if that happens i just unscrew something and let the air in it equalize and it usually sorts itself out.

Well, thanks for all the replies! I'm not really a forum person (not because I don't like them, but because I'm usually scared of them---possibly very stupid/newbie attitude?) and whenever I've tried to get answers on like a game forum or something, I don't. So this is great. I think my problem might be overfilling. I'm trying to air everything out and pour out some excess liquid, as per JollyRoger, and I'll see what happens.

But tell me, am I doing permanent damage to my coils if I smoke it with the burning flavor for too long? Can I reuse all of the ones I've set aside after getting the burning taste as long as I put them back in and don't overfill? Should I be cleaning them somehow?

Cleaning coils can be a bit hit or miss but usually works. I soak them overnight in cheap vodka and then let them dry out for a day or two. I've seen conflicting advice whether to dry burn BVC coils (and like everybody else has said, get rid of the old BDC's, if that's what you've got, and get BVC's) so I don't. I just reinstall them and let the filled topper sit upright for 5-10 minutes. Do a few dry hits and they work fine. I've had one coil that was still nasty after cleaning but it looked like something was wrong with the screen/coil so I just tossed it.

I just checked, and I think what my store is selling me is BDC coils. I looked online and just bought a pack of BVCs, the box says BVC right on it, whereas what I have at home doesn't. I'm excited to try the BVCs and see if it helps.

+1 for cheap vodka (I use Skol, cheapest I could find in a large plastic jug at my local liquor store). My routine is hot water rinse, vodka soak, hot water rinse again, then air dry. If I'm feeling impatient, I'll just blow out excess water after last hot rinse and install. You get a few flavorless wet hits at first, but works fine after that.

Also, it's possible to rebuild them, at least the older version coils, so don't chuck them out when they go bad on you. Check out RipTrippers on YouTube for a tutorial.

Nope. Don't do this with the BVC.

Thanks everyone, you've been great! Couple of follow-up questions:

1 )Does the liquid in my tank get "tainted" with the burning flavor if I don't take out a "burnt" coil? Someone suggested letting the coil sit in a full tank overnight to help with the taste---I'm willing to try that (while I'm waiting on the BVCs to come in the mail), but if it doesn't help, is it doing any damage to the liquid in the meantime? Same thing for cleaning a coil--if I can soak it in vodka and get the burnt taste out of it, that would be great, but is any of the burnt taste coming from the actual liquid (my Nautilus holds 5mL)?

2) I've had problems with other set-ups tasting burnt---usually because I was turning my voltage up too high on a tank/coil that couldn't handle it. Is my Nautilus (1.8 ohm coil) compatible with a variable voltage battery turned up between 4.0-4.8? One store told me that the Nautilus would be okay even up to 9 volts; another told me I shouldn't go any higher than 4. What voltage are you guys using with your Nautilus?

#1.) It may have cooked your liquid...is is a lot darker than before? Nicotine will darken naturally with heat and sunlight but if you're burning the liquid it IS possible that it may have tainted the rest in the tank. But the only real way to test this is to put what's left in the Nauty into another tank. If it still tastes bad, you have your answer.
#2.) I think the person at the store was probably talking about 9 watts - not 9 volts! 9 volts would be way too high. I usually vape my full size Nautilus and the mini anywhere between 7-9 watts or about 4 volts. I find if I go over 4 it burns out very quickly. But most (yes, even the BDC) last at least a week for me...I've even had some that lasted 2 weeks - though these are few and far between.
Hope this helps you out!! And welcome to ECF!!!
