Ok so let me start by saying that I know enough to know that there is no hard and fast way to determine what nicotine strength someone needs when they switch to vaping. That being said my dad is at a critical point and so the easier I can make this the more receptive he will be. We started this journey at a drugstore I was buying some cold medication for my partner and my dad proudly displayed his purchase, a disposable e cig.

Background: My dad has had three strokes over the last 15 years. He is OK for the most part, balance issues etc but still mowing his lawn and walking the dog etc. His doctor has been begging him to quit for as many years. My mom is an avid chain smoker and we all know how easy it is to quit when living with a smoker.

So the disposable did not do the trick obviously as it had no nicotine in it. this was a year ago before I knew what I know now which is not much but enough you know lol. Anyway he is at the point now where he pulls his patch off to have a few smokes during the day and is embarrassed about it but at least he fessed up. After the first day with his disposable we never talked about it but I think he will be receptive to trying again if I make it as foolproof as possible. My main obstacle is my mom who is super negative about anything new. She will be doing the filling and what not so again ease and straight forwardness is the key. I plan to buy two 15.00 or so ego kits(katana kits or similar with the clearomisers and some samples of juice but nic strength is the issue.

They both smoke ultra lights and he smokes maybe three to five, she smokes up to a pack. What I would like is to give them the two egos and the samples with a information sheet and a how to(which my partner will be managing) and let them go for a while to feel it out. I would love to be there to help and such but the minute my mom has any idea that this may be in any way about having them do something new it will be over, you know the type. What I hope is that eventually she will try it when no one is around and maybe like it that's why I am including her inadvertently:D.

Ok so suggestions would be greatly appreciated. also what I am really looking for is more than just "get them a bunch of samples of different strengths" because if I do that again it will be over. I would like some advice from some older ultra light smokers and where they started at etc.

thanks in advance, Light

I was a pack a day light cigarette smoker, maybe a little more, while my wife was a little less. We started with 24mg as it gave us enough of a nicotine "kick" to prevent the cravings. We moved to 18mg after about six months, and she is still there while I'm at 12mg. I would recommend 24mg to start as your mom is using a pack a day and your dad is using the patch combined with smoking. They can always ease down to a lower nic level later, but the first goal is to make smoking unnecessary. Good luck!

Vaping is not nearly as efficient in getting nicotine into your system as smoking is. What kind of analogs one smoked has little barring on what nicotine level to start with.

Since it is possible to reduce the amount of nicotine in a premixed eliquid but not practical to make it stronger, it's better to start higher than lower. For most trying to transition, 18mg - 24mg is a good starting point. Many polls on this and other vaping forums indicate this is the most common starting point.

This will give them the best chance to not struggle as much with the transition but if they find it is too strong, to easily dilute the strength if needed.

Good Luck

I was a pack or more of Marlboro lights.. I had to start with 26mg solely on the fact that I needed a good throat hit

does that matter to your folks? if not, I think 18mg would be a good starting point.

I think an ego with something really easy to fill would be ideal.. I dunno if cartos would be a good idea since they can be a bit of a learning curve with them

I think maybe an iclear30 or EVOD with an EGO battery would be the easiest setup - something they can unscrew, fill, screw back on and vape. it should be very simple at first for them

thanks for this, I think the katana kits come with the kangar style tanks so they would be fairly easy to deal with. As they smoke ultra lights I would assume that lighter throat hit would be better. I know that as an ex smoker I found the ultra lights to be like breathing air lol.

yeah I know... this is why I am grabbing onto his interest in e cigs and running. I see it as my own brand of harm reduction. Unfortunately the fact that my mom smokes makes it hard for the guy to make any progress. It isn't her fault though it's the lack of willpower over something that has herculean strength. But this way he can still sit on the deck with mom and puff away together. I don't foresee them ever quitting but at least they may be able to cut down on risk factors.

thanks, Light

Cutting back and finding enjoyable flavors is a great step. I have a friend whose wife lost a portion of a lung to surgery yet returned to her two and a half pack a day habit. She started cutting back with ecigs and now has stopped smoking and vapes here and there.

If they find flavors they like it will help a lot, so a few sample packs from vendors may be in store for Mothers day and Fathers day. Fruits and desserts provide a nice changeup. My wife and I will pull out a cookie tin of different flavors and hang out on the patio some evenings tasting different stuff - maybe a substitute for them too.

Haha that's exactly what I hope will happen. I have ordered an assortment of all kinds of highly reviewed juices in both 18 and 24 mg and I bought two kits. He will be easy as he has never met a dessert he hasn't loved. I am going to go up to the house and set everything up, type out a detailed but easy to follow instruction/ education sheet so my stubborn mom doesn't have to wound her pride and ask for help. My partner will be with them to drop them off so she will go in with them and help them get set up to try. Then we are going to let them be and my partner will field any questions they may have. If my mom gets any whiff of me spearheading this event she will instantly reject it. She is not unlike a two year old and broccoli, ok if it is her idea to try but the minute someone else suggests it it is a horrible idea lol got to love her. So hopefully this will allow him to get off or cut down on the analogs and might inspire her to try. that is all I can hope for.

Just another thought ... when I fly, I use nicorette lozenges (4 mg) to "survive" the flights. I was absolutely amazed that they work as well as they do!! They give 2 hrs of total relief from the cravings.

When I started vaping I was at 24 mg, but am now vaping 12 mg. I found that I had to break the lozenges in half otherwise I got a nicotine buzz taking a full lozenge, so once my 4mg ones run out I will probably get some 2 mg ones.

Perhaps a lozenge with no nicotine e-cigs?? I wish you well in this, and I hope you can report back success :)
