After my "I hate myself for smoking again" fiasco, I'm treating myself to an RDA to encourage myself to get tf off the nic sticks again and to regain a bit more control over my vaping style.

I've already been talking to someone a little bit about this but at this point thought it was time to start a thread, which I've been trying to avoid. I want to get my first RDA, though I'm not really just asking for general recommendations; I feel as though I've been reading non-stop for days and finally have an idea of what I want but simply can't find it. Or maybe it's just that I feel like my brain is about to explode. Here are my requirements:

1) I would like to get an authentic RDA for $45 or less. Alternatively, if someone can recommend a clone they are VERY comfortable with, I'd consider it. I was looking at the Tobeco Dark Horse clone under recommendation but then a bunch of negative things I read about it put me off a little.

2) I'll start with simple single coil builds, and honestly may stay there indefinitely. I like single coils. However, I would like the ability to build slightly more complicated builds in the future if possible.

2a) Because I may end up sticking with the single coils for a while, I don't like the holes in the deck of the Mutation X V4. That's out, and if any others have holes like that (directly under the wick), I don't think it's for me.

3) I like big clouds, but I like flavor too. Gun-to-my-head, flavor is more important.

4) Removable drip tip would be nice, but negotiable.

5) I am a jewelery maker and am perfectly comfortable doing small fiddly things with my hands. A large size isn't a prerequisite; I am much more concerned about not having to drill out post holes. They don't have to be huge, but please no drilling.

6) I am currently using mostly a Kanger Subtank (all sizes, actually) with both the .5s and 1.2 heads. I just want a dripper again, though again have never owned an RDA.

7) I like a cooler vape, but I think this comes down more to my builds than the RDA itself.

8) Phillips or flat head screws strongly preferred.

9) 22mm. Again I think this has more to do with the build than the atomizer, but I'll be using this on regulated VV/VW devices.

I think that's the most pertinent information. Please let me know if I forgot anything. I wasn't crazy about the Doge v2 (non removable drip tip that seems to get hot), The Mutation X 4 (the holes), and the Tobeco Dark Horse clone (too much back and forth over quality so far). I see I have the Freakshow pulled up in a tab and I like the look of it (and have heard good things); I can't find an immediately obvious reason to put it on the blacklist.

ETA: BAAAAHHHH Hex screws on the Freak Show, that might be a dealbreaker...

I hope I'm not looking for a unicorn.

If you happen to be the member I've been messaging, you've been super helpful but I thought you'd heard enough from me for one night. I almost sent another message a few hours ago and it's a good thing I didn't because look what happened.

ETA2: After all this, I'm back to thinking about the Volcano Cauldron 1. I'm not sure I'll be able to beat the price for an authentic and it seems like it fits all of my requirements. I doubt a $20 RDA is necessarily going to be the absolute best ever, but I did like Volcano in the past and what few videos I could find reviewing the Cauldron have been quite positive. Can anyone think of a reason not to do this, especially if I decide I'm a little uncomfortable with clones? The biggest problem I can already anticipate with this (and maybe it's a total dealbreaker) is the fact that the airflow seems to be controlled from both sides simultaneously. i.e., I don't think you can only close off one side. Does this prevent single-coil builds, or will they just be airy?

I just bought "the troll" for $35 in a B&M but they can be had online for $20. I would recommend looking at it.

2) I'll start with simple single coil builds, and honestly may stay there indefinitely. I like single coils. However, I would like the ability to build slightly more complicated builds in the future if possible.

The ability to build more complex coils, meaning more metal to heat up, mostly depends on your mod and it capabilities.

2a) Because I may end up sticking with the single coils for a while, I don't like the holes in the deck of the Mutation X V4. That's out, and if any others have holes like that (directly under the wick), I don't think it's for me.

The troll RDA I bought has similar posts to the x v4, actually identical post design although the air only comes from the sides. With the troll you can completely block of one side of air flow while still allowing adjustable air flow on the other side. Many RDAs have this ability and x v4 might also. So you can build single coils just fine.

3) I like big clouds, but I like flavor too. Gun-to-my-head, flavor is more important.

This mostly depends on your build. Coil, wicking and airflow all effect the flavor/cloud production. You can have both.

4) Removable drip tip would be nice, but negotiable.

I don't know of an RDA that doesn't have one

5) I am a jewelery maker and am perfectly comfortable doing small fiddly things with my hands. A large size isn't a prerequisite; I am much more concerned about not having to drill out post holes. They don't have to be huge, but please no drilling.

I would imagine if your building coils to thick to fit in the holes your bigger issue is going to be heating all the metal up not having to make bigger holes.

6) I am currently using mostly a Kanger Subtank (all sizes, actually) with both the .5s and 1.2 heads. I just want a dripper again, though again have never owned an RDA.

OK?

7) I like a cooler vape, but I think this comes down more to my builds than the RDA itself.

Deffinately comes down to the build and less so to the rda your using.

8) Phillips or flat head screws strongly preferred.

Over an allen head? I think Phillips head is whats most often found.

9) 22mm. Again I think this has more to do with the build than the atomizer, but I'll be using this on regulated VV/VW devices.

The troll is 22mm, theres also a ton others that are also.

I think that's the most pertinent information. Please let me know if I forgot anything. I'm actually strongly considering a Tugboat v2 now. That's the one I'm really wanting, but it's a little steep in cost and the Lawless Steamboat is currently out of stock at the one place that sells it. I've raised my price point a little as I'm having too much trouble finding what I want for relatively little money when clones make me pretty uncomfortable. Not totally opposed but also don't love the idea. Now I'm going back and forth between the Tugboat v2 and Twisted Messes basically. I'm still half considering a Tobeco Velocity or Dark Horse clone. The Troll looks OK but seems to be more of a cloud chasing atty whereas I'd like to find one in-between a cloud and flavor chaser, with flavor being of higher importance to me.

Also, coil, for your own information in the future, there are definitely a number of RDAs without removable drip tips. The Flawless Production and Doge v2 come to mind, as well as a small handful of others I've seen.

this a great one won't be disappointed Twisted Messes RDA by Compvape - Eciggity
its as close as i can figure you might like acouple other good choices
Tobeco Derringer Rebuildable Atty Clone
Plume Veil v1.5 Clone by Tobeco - Eciggity
twisted is my favorite so far

Thank you!! Yeah, the Derringer and Plume Veil (and clones) have definitely been mentioned a number of times, so they're on the list as well. I'm just trying to do my research carefully as I know this is my last big expenditure in a while.

I think I am leaning on the Twisted Messes. It's less expensive than the Tugboat and seems a little bit more versatile... but man I want a Tugboat someday. Have you run any single coil builds on your TM? I am 99% sure it's capable of doing so, but I'm curious about how they work on it. I like dual coil too, but I just want the ability to do both as I like the simplicity and performance of lower-resistance single coils a lot.

What are the biggest cons with the Twisted Messes in your opinion?

While you're shopping at eggity check out the Royal Hunter: Royal Hunter RDA by COV - Eciggity
Great flavor. Big driptip hole. Bug screen is part of the top cap. Mine is with dual coils but, I would think a single would work fine.

I learned to build on a Magna clone. It was easy for me. Great flavor too.

Thanks everyone! I did end up pulling the trigger on the Twisted Messes (I like the dual center post) but I have a feeling this will only be the first of many. I got it on MFS for $42-something plus shipping, so that feels really nice when I was considering a Tugboat v2 for $75 for half a second.

The Royal Hunter and el Cabron are on my list! Once I have an RDA I know I really like-- which I hope will be the TM after all the reading and research I did-- my stipulations can relax some and I won't have to feel so crazy about hitting all the check marks.

Thanks again!

I started dripping about 6 months ago after saying I'd never do rebuilding. I've bought 2 RDAs in the last two weeks...

That's where I was not too long ago. I thought it was too fiddly. Now I haven't even gotten my first RDA and I'm totally there. I truly can't afford to buy more than this one RDA for a while, though; otherwise I wouldn't have felt so crazy about finding the one as close to perfect (for me) as possible. Fortunately, I think I managed to find it :thumb:

Twisted messes RDA is a great choice. I was going to suggest either that or the Royal Hunter. Also, in your first post, you mentioned the freakshow. The freakshow's AFC is below the coils, and as you stated, you didn't want that

Well then I'm glad I didn't go with the Freakshow! At least for now. I didn't even see those holes; you can see in the OP I was all up in arms over the hex screws but obviously I decided to get over it for the Twisted Messes. Like I said, if the TM comes and I love it... and I'm super sure I will... then I can open up my requirements a little in terms of what styles I want to try as I know I'll always have a solid back up. It's such a relief to have it ordered. I was really making myself a little crazy. Every other atomizer I looked at I felt apprehensive about for one reason or the other. The second I read about the Twisted Messes I was totally comfortable getting it. Glad to hear I made a good choice :)

Side note: It feels weird using a singular article and a plural noun, a Twisted Messes.

Surprisingly hex screws are great. I have a doge v2, and an authentic dark horse, I used the hex screws that came from the dark horse on my doge so I could fit a chuff cap & other caps that fit it (a lot surprisingly). Atleast with the TM Atty you won't have to worry about fitting huge coils on the deck when you get to more complex building because of the way the AFC allows for extra room on the sidewall of the chamber. Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks!! Yeah I really have no problem with hexes than the fact that I just am worried about keeping track of the little, unattached key screws. I have a big multi-key-screw device I could probably also use providing the smaller ones are small enough; they might be. I've heard the hex screws actually work better than Philips or flat heads usually... I just listed that as a preference because of convenience, especially since at least for the time being I'll be wrapping on screwdrivers.

I've seen some of the coils people fit into the TM. Unreal! My first little single coil build will look so dinky in comparison :)

Speaking of, I'm about 90% sure I know the answer to this, but when bulding a single coil on a deck with a dual center post, I'll want to thread one lead through one negative post and then the other through the far positive hole, right? As in, (x) ()(x) (), with x's representing where the leads go?

If you don't like hex screws, then you don't have a good hex wrench. From r/c modeling I have good hex tools and would pick them any day over any screw, phillips or flat. Get MIP tools and you will never strip one out.

False: I do have a good hex wrench by necessity because my instrument has hex screws. That doesn't mean I like them.

Thanks anyway!
