I have been vaping now for a few months and love it. I am very into being techie and have moved into mods and experimenting with various combos of vaping equip.

My father is ready to quit smoking and needs to, is in his 60's and is willing to give vaping a shot. I am fairly confident that this will work for him as we are very similar in everything (except the techie part).

My biggest problem is because he is not technical at all and he lives in another state I want to make sure that whatever I set him up with is:

1: Easy to use - as close to no maintenance as possible
2: Reliable product
3: A solid vaping experience

I am thinking about the ego tank system as it looks very promising and I would just buy one for myself and test it for a couple weeks then get him one but I think he is ready to try this now and as we all know when it comes to smoking that when you feel ready to try to get off the bad things you should do it ASAP before you change your mind.

What do you guys think? Is it too soon to be getting the tank system for someone who has never vaped and will probably give it only one shot? Is there something better that you all would recommend that would be easy for me to support over the phone?

When I got started my cousin actually brought me over several devices, sat with me for a couple hours and taught me the ropes then left everything with me to figure out what I wanted first. I will not have that option with my dad.

Who knows, since each of us are so different. I'm not far from that age and my first pick was for a totaly "mechanical" PV, so there wasn't much to go wrong. I acquired a SDMKII Screwdriver while in Kandahar. Used 901's and 510's with one 3.7v battery and never, ever had a problem. I quit smoking at day 2 with it and it will always have a special place in my memory.
Yes, I moved on to variable voltage PV's now, but still have bottom feeders and that beloved Screwdriver.
Good luck and tell him I'm almost his age and smoked for 40+ years and vaping really worked for me. :thumb:

From my experience the eGo-T is a pretty low maintenance device. The only difficulty, as you probably know, might be that he may not appreciate the relatively larger size of the device compared to a cig (if he ever smoked a pipe or cigar it may not be much of a problem). Too, if he decides not to go with it, you could always get it back and use it yourself.

I have to reccomend the KR808-D1. You charge it, screw on a cartomizer and puff. If you're talking about simplicity that's about as simple as it gets. Then you can always move on from there but for simplicity, ease of use, and quality I can't think of a better starter PV.

This. I really think the KR808 is the way to go as far as getting the best of simplicity/reliability/quality vape. And it's not so different-looking from an analog that it's intimidating to a person just starting out.

This is a tough one (i know my parents are getting older) to tackle. While you would love to get them something awesome out of the gate I would suggest small steps. Yes it may cost a few extra $$$$ but at least they will not be intimidated. So I would suggest a two piece unit. Something like the KR808 or a mega batt penstyle 510 with cartomizers. Show them how to charge batts and fill the cartos and they are realtively good to go. After a few weeks then you can introduce atty's, DT's etc. If you are succesful you may find yourself plunking down a $100 or so for a MOD in a few months. Best of luck

Don't be too fast to judge the "old man" some of us old f@..s can still learn new tricks. :)

After smoking my entire adult life, and I'm about your father's age,
being able to NOT smoke for the first time in my life, was exciting
enough for me to work through a couple newbie mistake purchases and continue vaping.

I learned to find the best PV for my taste, how to fill carts, cartos, DIY juice, drip, etc..
I learned some advise ain't worth spit, and finding what works for an individual has
to include that person and their experience, and their tastes.

Whichever kit you decide to get, make him to promise to seriously try it for one week,
the change in how he'll feel in the AM should be enough to tip the balance.

All good advice so far...

Just want to make sure and state I am not trying to say my dad or getting old in general makes you less able to understand the mechanics... I can only hope to be as smart as my old man by the time I get to where he is.. I just know him personally and he does not like messing around with anything like some of the cooler things I have found in my own vaping journey..

I have much respect for all you "OLD FARTS" out there as I am well on my way to becoming one myself!

I introduced e-cigs to my mom (in her late 70's). She smoked for 60 years, and quit with e-cigs. I got her

1) An eGo
2) An eGo PT ( 1 & 2 are a combo from cignot)
3) joye 510 atties
4) Drip tip
6) e-juice

Now, she started off with dripping. This is mostly because I drip, and that's what she saw. It's also the easiest, no fuss, method. All the other methods require that you fill stuff with syringes, use PTB, blue foam, blah, blah, blah. Too much hassle. Dipping is the easiest to understand and use IMO.

Thus, dripping is the least "high tech" and easiest solution. If you start off with it, futzing with carts/cartos seems silly (at least with their current state).

Now, I've heard/seen videos of CE2 r 2's that work well all day. I've also read reviews where they had a lot of "futz" and issues. Same for the new eGo tank systems. So in the end, get him to drip and then he can mess with other stuff if he wishes, but "fall back" to dripping if it doesn't work for him.

2 cents.

Good Luck!

EDIT:
P.S. I should mention that she also has some standard 510 batteries for the "experience" of a cig-like size. Cool, as long as she has the eGo's for batter life (she did start with a 510 kit to "try it out"... the eGo kit above was for "OK, I'll switch to vaping and I'm tired of charging batteries" time.) Nothing says you can't have both. Helps the transition.

You're right, us old farts don't have time for messing with cool things.

But I think many will value function over form, and don't embarrass very easy.
We've gone from dial phones, vinyl records, B&W TV, vacuum tubes, to today
without much trouble. No disrespect taken at all, just don't sell us short. :p

Search ECF for "I want it to look like a cigarette", very common misconception
and usually a bad idea. Many people worry about what their e-cig looks like in public.

Have you seen how us old farts dress???, and you you still think that's a problem??:laugh:

I've walked the streets with a ego 900 with a 801 sticking out of it, good battery,
good BIG cart, good flavor since the 801 is generally higher ohms and burns less.

If you can find something that allows your dad to not smoke to begin, and work with
him to find his sweetspot in vaping, he may just surprise you.

Us old farts have been smoking for decades, you don't really believe that we never
tried to quit, don't want to quit, haven't tried everything to quit, and most importantly
don't believe there is anything that will succeed in helping us quit.
If you can get him past that, I would recommend a PV-1 with clear CE2 cartos,
and some ego mega attys for dripping. well maybe not as a starter kit......

p.s. : I could build a mod, but why? When I can pay a young wippersnapper to do it for me!!

You've gotten alot of good advice, but you have to decide at what level you "think" your
father can handle.
I have a friend who is NOT tech savy in anyway and can not turn on a computer. She
watched me make the transition and my ecig journey. (I have the Provape and Riva).
She very much wanted to give it a "try" but still was intimidated by batteries, cartos
filling with juice, etc. So when Apollo was giving away their Ecig Disposable, I ordered
one for her. It came in and she LOVED it. She has been vaping those ever since and
is completely happy with it. It cost her about $40 a month for those. I asked her the
other day if she wanted to try anything different (move up) and she said no. This was
easy and that is far as she wanted to grow. She even bought another disposable model
at a local cig shop and did not like the flavor or how long it lasted. She is Apollo
all the way now.
So that's my story for a low tech person. Some may can do a basic PV model and some
may not be able to.
He is very lucky to have you and your help!

For a non tech person the 808 with prefilled cartos is nice. Make sure to have a spare batt or two and, ideally, charger.

I've gotten several friends to quit that way, and they are still happily vaping.

For me, I have used 808, riva, and have a vv on the way. I also diy juice. I still recommend the 808 and cartos if a friend is not into tech -- the goal is to stop smoking, and simple is good for those who are not seeking a hobby.

Another vote for the KR808D-1 because you are in a different state and won't be able to give hands-on help with a model that may require tinkering; it may intimidate your dad. Eventually he may want to move on to something like a mod or another model but to begin with, I'd advise the 808 from Vapor4Life. They have a huge selection of cartomizer/juice options, different types of batteries (I'd recommend manuals) and they're super-easy for beginners to use.

In this circumstance, the kr808d-1 is the way to go. He may even appreciate some sort of PCC with it too, depending on how much he goes out and about.
