Need advice on flavor issue. Is it my technique, equipment or genetics?

I’ve been vaping for about a month now and am getting pretty frustrated. I’m having some flavor issues and for the life of me don’t know what to do to fix it or whether to decide “vaping just isn't for me...”

What happens is that the vapor tastes pretty good for the first two or three puffs. After that it just tastes hot and flat. Very little flavor at all.

First my equipment: I purchased an Ego Type-B Mega Pro starter kit. It came with 1000 mah batteries and two Type-B atomizers (one reg, one LR) I noticed I wasn’t enjoying the flavor very much and read some reviews about the tank system with similar complaints. So I ordered some SmokTech Dual Coil cartomizers (1.5 ohm) I had the same issue with them–One or two good puffs, then hot and flavorless. Research on the forum pointed to dripping. A 306 atty and drip tip arrived today. Same result.

My technique is to take a slow draw (3-4 sec) into my mouth, then inhale. I was a 2 PAD smoker and have noticed myself “chain vaping” I typically take 4 or 5 draws before setting the Ego down for a few minutes. ( I do release the button between puffs) I have noticed that I am drawing often enough that the atty or cone around it gets hot. Not warm–hot. Hot enough that the silver band with button on the battery also feels warm. The batteries themselves are staying room temp.

I’ve tried lots of ejuice from several different suppliers at 12-24mg. I don’t notice any difference there other than a peppery flavor in my throat at 24 mg.

So, any ideas? Do I need to work on my technique? Does a hot atty affect flavor? Or, do I need different equipment? If so, would a 5v mod keep the atty cooler and enhance flavor? I’ve read that higher volts give a hotter vape, so I thought that might make the problem worse. Or, do I just descend from a tastebud challenged gene pool and need to go back to analogs? Because I’m not enjoying the vaping experience as it stands.

Sorry for the length of this post, but I would appreciate any insight you may have.

Flavors do fade after a couple hits, mainly because the taste sensors in the mouth become saturated, not because of anything having to do with hardware. The best flavor I have found is from lower power vaping, like a regular 510 batt with a 3.2 ohm carto, or a 3.2 ohm CE2 carto. Heat does diminish flavors too, but sustained flavor I have found is fickle with any PV. try putting it down for a minute or so, then hitting again...my guess is the flavor will be back. It probably never left, you just couldn't sense it anymore if you were hitting too often.

that all said, I have found that Vaperite's organic juice line seems to have longer flavor staying power. But even those will fade after several hits in a row.

I wish I knew what cigarettes you smoked (e.g., menthol?, regular/light/ultralight) and what flavor juices you've tried.

  • I guess menthol is obvious: If you smoked and liked menthol cigarettes, try menthol juices (and not only pure menthol, but also menthol/tobacco juices).

  • China-made or US-made juices? [FYI: "USA Mix" usually is China juice.] You might prefer China juice; more likely you would prefer US (or UK) juices.

  • If you've been vaping non-tobacco juices try the tobacco flavors and vice versa.

  • If mild-flavored (I would call bland) juices like watermelon and banana or euphemisms for Marlboro, try the more potent flavors like cinnamon or cigar and Torque 56.

  • If you have not yet tried RY4, do so. However there is wide variation on sweetness and tobacco-to-caramel proportion among suppliers. My favorite is IkenVape's. And I've read that Hangsen's RY4 (e.g., from SmokTek and Liberty-Flights) is the original RY4.

On the cartomizer front, my favorites are three that have not yet been mentioned:
  • Smok Tech 1.7 ohm Mega Single Coil (e.g., from Crystal Clear Vaping or SmokTek). [You see, the dual coil is not really 1.5 ohms. IMO (and that of many others), it doesn't blossom until about 4.2V. Your eGo is 3.2V.]
And the Boge 2.0 (e.g., from LiteCigUSA, Crystal Clear Vaping, or MadVapes) is very popular.

These are all LR (low-resistance) cartomizers – to varying extents. To my subjective experience, they don't produce "hot" vapes, just more intense ones.

You don't really say if you are getting a lot of vapor, at the point where you say it's 'hot and dry'. The inference is that you aren't getting much in the way of vapor, as this is the main cause of that hot, dry feel.

This is down to equipment - either its type, or a malfunction. Unless you are getting clouds of rich vapor then your equipment is faulty and that is where you need to go first.
