My mom is 87, almost blind and in a nursing home. I am not a smoker and never have been, so I don't have a clue how to get her started with e-cigarettes. We have tried to get her to quit and she did for four weeks in the hospital, but she has smoked almost 65 years and has had so much taken from her, I am hoping e cigarettes will give her more freedom. She was smoking about a pack a day, they will take her to the smoking room after each meal and she will have 1 or 2. Social services has suggested e-cigarettes because she can keep them in her room and use them whenever. We feel like she will have more independence. Currently smoking Pall Mall, the red ones, before that was Tareyton 100.

Where do I begin? My siblings and I are all willing to buy these for her and make sure she always has them, but I don't have a clue. My nephew's wife smokes and did buy her one to try, but the package is gone, so I don't even know what brand, etc... I want to get her started out right, so I would love some input.

Thank you so much.

This might seem like an odd suggestion, but I'd recommend this for a few reasons.

BOGE Revolution V2 mod

--It's big. The battery will last a whole day on a charge
--It's big. Meaning she won't misplace it easily.
--It has a big button
--holds a lot of e-liquid (10 ml) so won't need to be refilled often
--It has a wrist strap

I don't know if that's the best price. I picked one up last Black Friday for around $25.

It's not a beauty in the sense it looks like a cigarette- but with her limitations it is pretty user friendly.

As far as a liquid, I don't vape tobacco liquid. I did pick up a bottle of Backwood Brew Virginia to have on hand for people to 'test' out my liquid to try vaping and everyone seems to like it. For a tobacco liquid, I don't even mind it. Very subtle.

I'd buy a bottle of 18 mg or 24 mg. and a bottle of 0 mg so you can mix them to find a good nicotine level for her.
Virginia Tobacco

**Edit- feeding the liquid to the cartomizer takes a little practice. You have to turn it upside down and give the bottle a little squeeze, but it would probably be do-able.

She is willing to try it, because she wants to be able to smoke whenever she wants to smoke. :) I have been reading posts and as long as she can combine this with regular cigarettes, she might get away from cigarettes. She can light her own cigarettes, but there is always someone with her, because we have to remind her to drop the ashes, etc.... So many of her clothes have burn marks and my kitchen floor is full of them where she always sat (she lived with me prior to the nursing home). I have so much to learn about this, it's a whole new world! My niece did lots of research, so hopefully between reading here and her information I can get mom started.

If she is forgetting to drop ashes from her cigarettes then I wouldnt recommend anything with a button on it.She might forget and hold it down causing the attie to fry and possibly short the battery which could be extremely dangerous. If you search there are 510s and maybe other batteries as well with an auto feature that only works when you inhale.

this right here.try looking into the new eRoll or a smokeless image volt with a pcc she can keep them in so she doesn't misplace them easily.

I would NOT recommend a Twist or other VV for a person who is practically blind! Especially the Twist...which is really hard to see what volts are set. She could accidentally crank the thing up and burn up the atty in her cartomizer. Bad plan. Also too complicated for a lifelong smoker with physical limitations.

I agree that an automatic would be a good thing. The Smokeless Image Volt has batteries that are the size of a cigarette (which she'll be used to) and prefilled cartomizers at a fair price to put on the battery...all she'd have to do is periodically screw a new cartomizer onto her battery when the older one is empty. Manual is going to likely be to much for her to handle comfortably. These days the automatics are very good and draw just like a cigarette. I'd go that way. As for flavor...I don't really know about Parliment. My husband smoked Marlboro and uses the Smokeless Image "Cowboy" also called "Country", and he likes it fine. Worth looking into.
Smokeless Image | The Best Electronic Cigarette They have other sized kits, but for your Mom this is probably about all she'd need...plus extra cartomizers (the filter end that holds the juice) You get 5 with the kit..your choice of flavor. She'll need more though which you can add to the order and have handy for her.

Without knowing the particulars of your mom's capabilities it is very hard to recommend anything that won't prove to be a total waste of money and effort. Also, if the first device your mom tries comes up a loser it may be difficult to persuade her to try something more suitable.

Do you think your mom will have any problems with arthritis pain after holding onto a small object like a pencil but quite a lot heavier for several minutes? Does she have any palsy issues? Does she have any devices to help her see better? Is your mom physically and mentally able to plug a device(s) into a charger once a day? If not, will staff help her with that or are you and you siblings able to help?

I would very much suggest you purchase something locally from a known good retailer if one is available. If you are comfortable revealing a more specific location it would probably be worth starting another thread asking about good brick and mortar stores that are within a reasonable distance from you.

If you don't have a good quality brick and mortar store nearby I would very much recommend purchasing from a seller who has different types of devices for sale and offers phone support. You need to tell the seller about of all of your mom's limitations so they can make a good recommendation.

From personal experience I would highly recommend Vapor Beast for their exceptional customer service and phone support. Tim, the owner, is extremely patient in actually listening and recommending what is best for the customer rather than his bottom line. Not many sellers offer phone support so I hope others will jump in with their positive experiences with phone support from other sellers so you have more choices.

Also, once you have found suitable hardware you will be faced with what can likely turn into a much more challenging task of finding juices that your mom will like. I've tried over a hundred juices from highly recommended juice sellers and would consider reordering a whopping total of 16 juices. Older people generally have lost some sense of taste and it takes some time for taste buds to recover from smoking which can make the quest for suitable juice(s) even more challenging.

To start with I would recommend trying the inexpensive juice sample cartomizers from Vapor Beast as all of their limited number of juices taste exactly as described with no nasty chemical, perfumey or "off" taste. All there juices benefit from steeping but Peachy Keen and Bees Knees taste fine right away. Steeping means taking the lid off the juice for a day or two, putting the lid back on the juice, storing it in a dark place for a couple of weeks and shaking the juice vigorously every day while it is steeping. It is not an exaggeration to say that steeping can make the difference between disgustingly vile and fabulous for some juices.

I would also recommend Virgin Vapors and Ahlusion for juices. Both of those sellers offer high quality juices and exceptional customer service. They will work very closely with their customers to tweak juices to suit customers' individual tastes.

It shouldn't be a big issue to find a battery that turns itself off after the button has been held down for a predefined number of seconds. The bigger problem may be arthritis pain that may come with repeated use of a stiff switch. I would also be wary of anything as small in diameter as a cig-alike. Batteries weigh more than cigarettes and may prove to be painful for someone with arthritis to hold.

There is also the issue of an automatic cig-alike providing a satisfying vaping experience for a long-time smoker.

I'd recommend keeping things 'simple' for your precious Mother. Most eCigs have a learning curve, except one. It's the brand new "NJoy KING" ecig... just hit the Market and is getting terrific reviews with both novice & advanced vapers alike. NJoy KING may not be the 'cheapest' on the Market (Each single disposable automatic eCig is $8.00), but I've vaped everything and these are absolutely the closest thing to a REAL Cigarette that I've experienced since I began vaping in 2009. I wished these would have been available when I first began vaping! ..... Buy her as many as you can afford in advance. Anyone can use these, you just open the small hard flip-top style case, pull the small eCig out & vape. The pre-filled cartomizer is even wrapped in paper so it's almost identical to an actual cigarette ..... They come in menthol, Regular Tobacco (Reds) and Light (Golds). I've included the link to the NJoy Web Site where you can do a 'search' for the stores in your area for availability. Electronic Cigarette - Smokeless E Cigarette - Vapor E Cig | NJOY

IF you're unable to locate the NJoy KING brand, (and it HAS to be the NJoy King as the other NJoy brands just won't cut it and would most likely be too complicated).... then I'd recommend getting whatever 'other' automatic disposables you can find locally.

If you think your Mom can handle an eCig that can be recharged, (You mentioned she's almost blind so perhaps someone could be assigned the 'job' of attaching new cartomizers when needed and recharging her batteries?)....then I'd recommend the "Elite" 808 System by CigEasy. THE ELITE 808 KIT - be sure to select the 'flavor' and strength of the nicotine liquid during checkout. This would certainly pose more 'problems' than disposable eCigs but would certainly save money.

I wish you success in this venture and please keep us updated on your precious Mom

When my mom started vaping I got her a KR808 kit with prefilled cartomizers thinking she'd adapt easier that way.

Wrong.

My mom smoked probably 60 years like this woman. She liked it, but she probably used it for about 2 weeks before I got a bigger battery model with low resistance cartomizers.

This really depends on how much someone is with her. I'm with my mom daily so I keep her batteries charged and cartos/tank full. If someone can't do that, I'd really suggest a bottom feeder if she doesn't care about it looking like a cigarette.

I'm not pushing it by any stretch, but the Boge Rev. has a 1400 mah battery (think that's what it is)- she'll get around 3 days on a charge if she doesn't vape non-stop. It holds 10 ml. of liquid which should also last her for days without a refill. Get a couple bottles and keep them full.

With mine it was an eGo and dripping into atomizers. No messing with hardware that way. Since she started with dripping, it wasn't an "issue". That's just how it worked. :) Mom was about 78 at the time.

Zero hardware problems other than my having to clean atomizers. She not only quit smoking, but has quit vaping too and is now smoke-and-vape free.

Of course, dripping is a bit iffy if you're shaky or can't see well.

I haven't read the whole thread but The easiest thing to use is a basic kgo. It lasts all day with just about any juice delivery system. I've had mine since last feb and they are really good and pretty cheap. I have better now but they are a great backup if needed. She would need help filling cartos or any juice delivery device . You would need a basic weekly routine to help her with cartos.

I don't recommend disposables very often,,,,,,,,,but I think in this case, it's your best option,,,,,

I'd go with the Njoy King,,,,,,,,as recommended by someone else,,,,,,,,,,seriously easy, and no need to worry about recharging or filling cartos,,,,,,,,,if she's blind (or close to it) this will be much easier for her.
