If your charger is protected (which it better be) then the only problem you'll run into is over-draining your batteries. Some APV's have protections against this but if you're using a mechanical without some sort of protection, just don't use it for too long.
Hello,

I just got a bunch of 18650 batteries that I thought were protected and are not on closer inspection. I know they are dangerous, but are they usable in mods? Specifically the k200 or k100. Are there relatively cheap mods that manage over and under charging themselves?

Thanks.

Safe chemistry batteries, those marked IMR, in a regulated, protected APV, are probably the best way to go no matter what. You have the protection from the device plus the safe chemistry means that the worst thing that may happen is they may leak, but they won't explode or anything. Lots of threads on this, and lots of Vets here with a passion about batteries. Surely, others will chime in about this along the same lines. I use only IMR Batteries, preferring AW, MNKE, Pannies, and Efest. Most consider the AW the safest IMR battery out there. Do some research on this forum. Don't worry, be happy!

Woah, thanks for the very quick replies. I really appreciate the feedback and information.

The batteries are cheap chinese 2000mah lithium cobalt. I bought them recently intending to use them in a flashlight so this was more of an after thought when I found out apvs use them.

I currently have 510-ts which have a frustratingly short battery life. So what I am getting from all this, the bubblevape article, and other forum threads is they are fine as long as I am not using them in mechanicals and only buying IMRs in the future wouldn't be a bad idea. Thanks again everyone.

That's still not a very good spec (manufacturer and model # would be better).

For example:
The drawback of Li-cobalt is a relatively short life span and limited load capabilities (specific power).
Types of Lithium-ion Batteries

Basically, if you're not sure don't use em until you get complete specs. Also note that APV's with boosters (most VV models) require "high drain" batteries. They draw extra amps to boost the volts...so you're drawing more amps than you might think.

And for mech mods, you need to know how they perform during catastrophic failure. IMR is often suggested. There are some hybrids that are often used too but it depends on the specific model. And remember that any coil can short at some point when it "pops".

So get exact specs or don't use them, IMHO. I'm in the "abundance of caution" camp.
