Hi Daniel and welcome! I had similar experiences trying to quit smoking. What worked for me when I started vaping was using a vape juice with a high nicotine content. That pretty much was the trick I needed. I vaped enough until I felt satisfied, which is the big difference between vaping and a nicotine patch. I never vaped too much as to feel nauseous as can happen if you overdo it, but I never felt the need to do so. Good luck!

You might want to try being a "dual user". The more you learn about vaping techniques and your equipment the easier it will be to cut down on your cigarette usage and eventually quit smoking all together. What device and e-juice are you using? There's a whole bunch of reading you can do to help you get up to speed. Unfortunately, I haven't learned how to link to all the stuff yet. Other members will be along shortly that will provide the links. Don't be afraid of asking stupid questions. I'm pretty sure I asked all of them already.

My guess is you'll have better luck using vaping to quit smoking than using any of the traditional stop smoking aids. I had tried the nicotine gum & patches, prescription drugs, and hypnosis on multiple occasions with no luck. I was able to put the smokes down for good after one week of dual usage (vaping and smoking) with my first starter setup.

What I did was set a quit date and kept one pack of cigarettes to use for the "really bad cravings". I vaped as much and as often as I pleased. I still got cravings, so I tried to vape more. When that didn't work, I allowed myself HALF of a cigarette, and saving the rest for the next time. Those second half cigs tasted terrible, but that actually helped me to quit. By the end of the week when the pack of cigs was nearly gone, I found that I preferred the vape over the cigs. I've been tobacco-free for over six years and don't miss the smokes at all.

If you do decide to dual use, I suggest using a different brand of cigarettes rather than your favorite. I was a very loyal Marlboro Menthol smoker, and sometimes would turn down any other brand if offered to me.

Try to find a flavor that you like. This is probably as important as the type of "gear" you end up purchasing. You won't vape it if you don't like the flavor. It's also important to realize that you won't find a flavor that "tastes like a cigarette"; not even close. Find a menthol or mint, fruit, candy, desert, or coffee flavor that you like and go with that.

Just remember, "It's not how many cigarettes that you smoke that is important. It's how many you DON'T smoke that is.

Be sure to get the correct nic concentration in your e-liquid based on your previous smoking habit.

For e-liquid, the typical nicotine recommendations are generally determined by how much you smoked, and are as follows:

1/2 pack per day or less = 6 mg nicotine
1 ppd = 12 mg
1 1/2 ppd = 18 mg
2 ppd = 24 mg

Should you choose to use a sub-ohm juice attachment (coil less than 1.0 ohm); drop the above recommendations by half.

Figure on consuming at least 3 - 5 ml of liquid daily. Bottles are usually 10 or 30 ml volume.

I've been vaping for 8 years, I smoked for 27.
Vaping saves lives, smoking kills them.

The problem you face is that finding a vape setup that provides you the experience you need to divorce yourself from smoking will be more difficult than picking up a smoke and lighting it.
You may need to try a few different setups and do some experimenting to find your sweet spot, but trust me when I say it is worth it. A life free from slavery to tobacco is well worth the extra effort.

The only starter kit that I can vouch for is the Kroma-A & Zenith as I have recommended to a couple of new vapers and have had nothing but good feedback. There may be others along with additional advice on starter kits.

The equipment is important, the juice and it's nicotine level is important, and the way you use it is important too. Vaping is a lot more technical than smoking so access to good advice is key.

Lastly, feel free to ask as many questions as you like. You've landed in the right place to get great advice, ECF regulars just love to help.

Hello Daniel. I would also recommend the Kroma/Zenith kit + 18mg juice. If not the Zenith tank I would go with the Kanger Toptank; both have good coils and versatile airflow to play with. IMO finding the draw you prefer is as important as finding appealing juice. If you haven't used this site before code NEWMFS15 will give you 15% off your cart. They are a good vendor I have used myself.

Start out with a high nicotine mg. Some say if you subohm that 6mg is high. I subohm and my juice is 20mg of nicotine. You’re new so that probably doesn’t make sense but subohm refers to the coil and below 1 ohm basically produces more vapor so you absorb more. Over 1 ohm=less vapor. So my tip to you is subohm vape an ejuice that’s in the 20’s mg’s And don’t get frustrated. Don’t put limits like today I’m only gonna smoke X amount of cigs. Just vape when you want and smoke when you want. As long as vaping is giving you enough nicotine, I think you’ll start to smoke less and vape more. That is as long as you get a juice that you enjoy because a tasty juice is so much better than a cigarette ever will be. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

hey guys, so I’m really new to all this, been a smoker for 20years any tips or advise on how to “transition” to a healthier lifestyle? I get really bad nicotine withdrawals when ever I tried to quit, anything from flaring tempers to bad migraines,
Cheers
Daniel

Hi Daniel. Welcome to the ECF.

When I switched to Vaping, I needed to Ramp-Down on smoking while Ramping-Up on e-Cigarettes over a couple of Months.

It gave me a Chance to Figure Out exactly what e-Cigarettes/e-Liquids worked (and what Didn't work) while Not all Twisted Up in Smoking Withdrawals.

Then, when I got to those last 2 or 3 Cigarettes a day, I could do the Final Push to get over the Hump.

I'd focus on getting set-up with an e-Cigarette you Like. And some e-Liquids that you can use All Day. And, once you have things more Dialed In, you can concentrate on Kicking Smoking to the Curb.

I also got the "rage" effect while quitting along with a LOT of other stuff, LOL. I'm going to say up your nic as high as you need to/can.

I would suggest Whole Tobacco Alkaloid juices they helped me a great deal. However, it sounds like where you are that may be hard.

I might try taping cigarettes slowly as you vape, some folks can achieve that, others find a swift and rapid switch is better. I relapsed into smoking after my first anniversary  but just climbed back on the horse.

There is no one here that will give you grief (including me) for smoking if you need to. Honestly, it's tough, and there are many ways to approach it.

This also helped me as I was transitioning (I did dual use in the beginning but not that long) and it helped me understand what I was going through,. I got some symptoms on the list, but by no means all, so take the info for what it is worth you may experience no, some, or many sx while quitting smoking but if it gets overwhelming and you aren't sure about something, well, it may be useful.. Welcome aboard. There was a study done about the more time vaping, the more likely a full switch so hang in there and don't give up! Etc.

Welcome Daniel.

It is just so sad and unjust that vaping is banned in many countries.

I smoked from aged 16 to 43 and tried as hard as I could to not increase my cigarettes per day. Smoking is bad like this... with food or alcohol I could keep it under control somehow. With smoking... hmmm... I did OK compared to many and went from maybe only 5 cigarettes a day aged 16 to about 15-20 cigarettes per day aged 43. I know people who joined me smoking at 16 (school friends) who had made it to 40 cigarettes per day by their late 20s. Some of them are now DEAD. It is shocking. They say lung cancer is rare in the under 45s and most likely when you are 70. I lost my best friend and another 'good' friend to cancer who never made 45 y.o. Smoking has ended the lives of both my grandfathers and my father. None of them made 80 y.o.

You can do it! You can survive the headaches. The withdrawal is mild when you switch to vaping (compared to cold turkey) ... no question.

Nicotine replacement never worked for me. Vaping did.... and it was quite easy.

More power to you! :)
