In a perfect world, yes. Unfortunately, we live in a world that is FAR from perfect.

If your assumption were true, why will a PT with a Premium carto not work on the built-in port (on the side) of my work laptop, but work perfectly well on the same laptop's port replicator? On the built-in port, I get a message that a USB device is using too much power and the port is being shut down.

This laptop is a business class machine from a high-end manufacturer. The port replicator is from the same company and is designed specifically for this laptop.

I'm not trying to slam you. Just pointing out that your assumption does not hold up to nearly 40 years of professional experience.

Well i have used them on laptops and desktops no probs, I guess I just haven't used any premium carto's, but I thought I did, must be a middle model carto...

LOL REALLY...all USBs supply the same power if they are 2.0,

Nope! 2.0 specs minimum on a root not maximum. Ditto Draft for 3. And different chipsets attempt to offer what they feel the customer needs in different ways.

In fact, we've seen the available power on several chipsets go up on the same major release, minor fab run, in preparation for the iPad charger on the couple hundred thousand devices we've shipped this year.

Wow! Thanks for all the input guys! I think it must be a defective PT, as it doesn't work on either the laptop or the desktop. I have read so many threads where people say they use it all day long on their computer with no problems.

I should probably mention that even though I usually use the laptop, it is almost always plugged into a power source (not operating on the laptop battery). I don't know if that would make a difference or not.

Since I do have a power source convenient to where I do most of my smoking, I wouldn't mind purchasing an upgraded AC power source to use on a regular basis if I like the PT, but at this point I really don't even know if I DO like it or not. Just for the heck of it, I tried the AC converter that I use to recharge my IPAQ, but it is only 500mA, and if I am reading these threads correctly, that is not enough power for the PT. It didn't work, of course.

I did send an email to V4L last night, so hopefully I will hear back from them soon with some suggestion or resolution.

Thanks again to everyone for their information!

Thanks for your information Addy! I didn't seriously expect it to work, as I had read on another thread that the PT needs more power than many converters supply, but I wanted to feel that I had tried "everything" before giving up.

I would also like to apologize to everyone if my questions seem stupid. I do read the threads and use the search engine to try to find my own answer before posting. I have gotten answers to most of my questions by doing that, and have found so much great information here. Thanks again to all.

On the bright side, I have already heard back from Mark at V4L, and they are shipping me a new PT today.

Adja, your questions do not seem stupid. If I had felt that the questions were ones that were easily found on the search here, or that the question wasn't worth my time, I wouldn't have answered.

Disclaimer: If I don't answer a thread, don't automatically assume I think the question is stupid. I don't have the time I used to, so I don't read all the posts anymore.

I'm glad you are getting a replacement PT.

Adja. The button might just be stuck. Before you lose faith, jiggle the button and see if you can get to release. I've had that happen to me before. At least get you going till the replacement gets there.

Hi Lonercom! This PT is an auto though, so there is no button. I do appreciate your input though!

Hi x3x! They are sending me a new one today. Thanks!
