Funny seeing you here E. I was looking around and wanted to ask if I could just use unflavored juice and add flavorings / steep in material. That way I don't have to mix.

I really want a tobacco / vanilla / oak barrel juice and was thinking I could just get unflavored juice and steep it in oak barrel wood with some tobacco and vanilla pods?

Edit: I might latch on to your post and see if I can get my answers here.

LOL... yeah, I'm trying to broaden my horizons, so to speak.

I'm finally satisfied with all my gear and I've settled on the flavors I like, now I just need to start making them myself and further reduce my vaping expenses.

I just need some help getting started. Maybe we can both get our questions answered.

I'm going to tag along too (bump).
I'm planning on making a wizard labs purchase later this month to try my hand at DIY. Save me some money and maybe recoup some costs by selling to friends ($5/30 ml is a great deal for both of us - provided my juice is any good...)

After doing some research, I filled up a cart on WizarLabs.us for about $60. I'd probably have to buy more vg/pg soon, but $60 would make me over 240ml of juice, so I think it's more than justifiable as that's about what I would pay for 90ml (3x30ml).

My cart:
-24mg nic in vg 120ml (no need for 100%.. I vape 3mg and getting it at 24 so I can dial it up for friends)
-Vg 120ml (to cut 24mg nic juice down)
-5x30 ml bottles in Amber glass
-5x3ml bottles (for making small test batches)
-9x syringes: 3 each: 1ml,10ml,20ml
-9x 20ga blunt tip syringe needle tips
-15 flavors at about $1.50 each mostly TFA

46 items for $55 + tax&ship

One thing you'll all need is a calculator -- E-Juice-Me-Up is probably the favorite around here -- eJuice Me Up - Best eJuice Calculator

If you want to mix pre-made juices, or add some WTA or pre-made juices to your base mix, this one is great: DIY E-Liquid Calculator Ten Flavors With Nicotine Plus PG/VG Adjusting

I'm sure there are a lot of places online to get all the essentials, but I've found that Ecigexpress is a treasure trove of DIY stuff -- ecigexpress.com -- but their pkging of high-mg nicotine leaves much to be desired; I had to clean up what had spilled inside the ziplock wearing gloves, since it was 100mg nicotine. I get my nic from Wizard Labs from now on; they use THREE ziplock bags, and the container doesn't leak. But, ecigexpress has a ton of flavors, including "Bitter Wizard" which does wonders with tobacco flavors, and they also have nicotine test kits. My own experience is that the Tobacco Express flavor "Virginia" is truly great, none of that rotten-celery taste/smell. Golden Virginia isn't bad either, a little smoky; a smidgen more of that sort of "hay" kind of smell/taste, but nothing like that rotten-celery taste/smell of FlavourArts' Virginia. The "Signature" brand Cinnamon Redhot is also great.

Best place to get great deals on syringes is still Amazon -- 10-pks of 3ml and 10ml syringes for amazing prices. You'll have to look and see which come with blunt needles and which don't.

Just my 2 cents, I would get some 14 gauge tips to easier deal with vg.

I might also order more supplies to take advantage of free shipping...

Ron

Thanks Ron!
I'll change that to 14ga and add another bottle of strait vg to maybe bump me over that free shipping barrier.

Anything else I should add to the order? Or anything I should order more of?
I'm not too worried about safety gloves and goggles as I'm not dealing with 100% nic. I used to get 12mg on my hands all the time, so I don't figure I'll over nic from a bit of 24 mg, as long as I wash my hands right away. Is this false confidence?

Thank you for your input!

Thanks for the replies.

I guess what I'm looking for is.... If you were just starting out what would your first order look like? A shopping list of sorts.

I use 6mg juices and the flavors I've settled on so far are... lemon custard, vanilla custard, blackberry pie, cotton candy, and some non-flavored.

Thanks,

+1 for ecigexpress they have a ton of flavors from almost a dozen vendors which are reasonably priced. I use them all the time.

I am a lazy mixer at this point LOL. You really don't need bottles unless you want something fancy to store it in; i use bottles i have used already. If i use used bottles i mix the same sorta flavor that came in them. If strawberry was in it i put a strawberry recipe in it. You will just end up putting all the parts into the end bottle anyway; Just mix into the bottle. I stopped using a needle on VG a while ago. I just use a 15ml syringe itself for the VG. It has a little point on it any way as it doesn't accept a syringe. I just go to the pharmacist and ask for syringes. They usually give them to you for free :) (I go there enough for my kid so they all know me) I have so many now it is not funny. I do have a couple of small plastic beakers since some of my PG/VG are tall and skinny i can't get to the bottom of them so i pour a little into the beaker so i can get it into the syringe but that is all i use them for. Oh and I have one other 10 ml for the flavors that are going into the mix. There is just no way you can have a syringe for every flavor. I have about 40 flavors at the moment and more are in the mail. So just a couple of beakers are a good idea to get the rest out of a bottle but you probably wont be using them to mix in.

Also, keep in mind that you should order a little more of whatever your mix leans towards. In other words, for instance, if your mix is going to be 50PG/50VG and your nic is suspended in PG; you should order a bigger bottle of VG or you will run out of that first since you have PG in nic and plain PG already. So you use up roughly twice as much VG than you do PG. Opposite is true if you are going PG heavy (70PG/30VG) you should order a bigger bottle of PG since you will be using more of that than VG.

I have read posts about a guy who said he worked in a vape shop that spilled 100mg nic on his hands all the time and never even felt dizzy. I have spilled 48mg nic on my hands and not noticed anything at all even while continuing to vape. I mean i get up and wash it off but i do not panic and run to the sink like my flesh is melting. At this point, to me, I think this fact is slightly overrated as it seems some people say if you get 100mg nic on you it is the same as acid or something or even really bad. It is kinda a "meh" point. This topic has been discussed many times over and as far as i can tell it is not as dangerous as you may be lead to think. But that is my own personal opinion and how I choose to handle it. Obviously, the lower your nic is the safer it is.

No, probably not; I have some 24mg ejuice that I use to bump up some of mine; probably get it on my fingers sometimes, no worries. I only use gloves because I use the 100mg for DIY, and nicotine *is* absorbable by the skin, and I'm sensitive to too much, with nausea -- don't want that, ever! :D

I'd say gloves would probably be necessary at 36mg and higher.

The usual...read dannyv45's blogs and those blogs by Hoosier. Some folks say there is a bunch of info in them.

The unusual, don't confuse 10% nicotine (100mg/ml) with 100% nicotine at any point or in any calculation. Discussion of 100% nicotine is a violation of ECF rules anyway, so it should be even less confusing that 100mg/ml is NOT 100%.

For the oak steeping, I'm not sure about whether the tannin in the oak would be a good addition, since it cam be a pretty serious irritant. At low enough levels, maybe it's not an issue.

I have read numerous threads about people trying to use natural vanilla extract and home extracted vanilla as flavoring, and all of the resulst I have seen indicate that in order to get enough flavor that you can taste it, you have to use so much you gear clogs up very rapidly. But I don't think it would hurt anything to throw a few whole pods in and see what happens.

For the tobacco, there is a wealth of information in the "Liquid Extraction From Tobacco" subforum from people that have tried lots of different methods, some successful, some not, so that would be a good place to check out.

I have the same feeling going on that I had when I started vaping. Everyone is talking and you don't have a clue what's going on. :tumble:

Well I'd found this juice by 28 days vape, whereby they steep their juice in oak barrels for...wait for it..... 28 days. And I wanted to buy but the price is kinda high just to try a juice I might not like. That's why I was looking to see if I could steep some unflavored stuff in a whiskey oak barrel.

Personally I've been looking into DIY a bit lately, so it's not all a foreign language at this point.
I'm not getting into extracts yet, but I will at some point I imagine since I loved my drum tobacco. I have some concern though, wouldn't that add more hazard to vaping as you are likely to extract the pesticides and such that were used during the cultivation process of the tobacco? Obviously it's still better than smoking IMO since you aren't inhaling burning fibers, but seems like it would be less healthier than other vaping as you are extracting the 300+ chemicals that are associated to tobacco. I'm basically talking out of my ... though.

As far as 100mg, that's equivalent to 10% nic, right?
I think 12mg is 1.2% so that would stand to reason...
