Evening All,

I have been researching and youtubing religiously while away at work while ordering my first mechanical mod and rba. Previously I had been using a lavatube with a cart. I figured it was time to get into the big boy league. I am still waiting on my ohm meter, ss 30 g kanthal, and 400 ss mesh. I have the clones as a starter for the nemesis and kraken. I got them both from vividsmoke.com. it came with a small ss mesh and silica wick as well as kanthal. I attempted the ss wick first. After getting the coils right, I took my first hit. It was awful. It had a terrible taste like metallic awfulness. I assumed it was the mesh and couldnt see how I saw so many people use it so I tried the silica. I tasted the same thing with it too. I oxidized the mesh 3 times with a lighter as I dont have a torch yet and also poured ejuice on it and burned it a few times as well. I have a hunch that it is the coil as I was checking for hot spots on both the mesh and the silica, I smelled the same smell that I tasted which was awful. Didnt realize it until I tried the silica. What am I doing wrong? I did use a lighter to the coil to straighten it and also cleaned rhe mod and rba with alcohol earlier that day.

Id wait for the ohm meter. Do you know how to calculate amperage and what it means to your safety? If not you shouldnt be doing this.

Lecture over. So if I understand what you're say, it's that you get a crazy metal taste when using mesh and silica?

Humm. Usally I'll get a slight hint of metal taste with a new coil but it quickly goes away and is barely noticeable.

Never used mesh. I stick with cotton these days. Maybe give that a try?

Oh I should have mentioned it but I have a lavatube 2.0 VV and used it to check the ohms. But this was no slight metallic taste. This was complete metallic taste that was unbearable. I figured it was just how mesh was so tried the silica. I didnt get any smoke and just horrible metallic taste on my 2nd try. I was actually scared it was poisoness from doing something wrong haha the newbie in me I suppose.

After I mounted the coil and checked for an even glow, I doused the wick with ejuice and filled ths tank about halfway but tilted the wick in the tube for a min or so to be submerged completely in ejuice. When I lit it after I put ejuice on the wick, it only glowed on the neg and positive connecting coil. I heard that was normal and how it vaps. But the middle coils didnt light.

StarsAndBars hit the nail on the head. If your getting that taste of burnt metal, you have hot spots. The legs should not be glowing, not at all. I have the AGA T2, when I got it I had them build it up, as I watched to get the jist first hand and not from a video tutorial. My first build, lets just say I had hot spots and it was jacked up. Started over and took my time with it. Had a hot spot, corrected that problem and bam, only tasted the juice.

Ahh well good. I was starting to think yall were crazy to enjoy it haha. I will have to wait until I get the rest of my supplies in the mail monday but I am ready to tackle it again. I guess I need to watch more youtube videos on it. Unfortunately, WV is not a state with ecigs let alone mech mods so I can't find someone to show me how to do it correctly. I always get weird looks from the lavatube as it is heheh.

I hope you disassembled the Kraken clone, and cleaned it good with degreaser/alcohol etc. mine had a TON of oil in it from machining. Even when I thought I got it all out, there was still that taste until it burned off ...and it was somewhat metallic tasting to me.

The kraken is a nice RBA, and I could get it set up to vape nicely, but I could not get it to do so without being very leaky.

You're experiencing hot spots and dry hits. On SS mesh the coils have to be evenly spaced and have the same consistent tension, they should all glow evenly and start to glow from the middle and then to the ends. SS mesh is probably the most difficult rba style to master, and can be finicky. Usually need to keep adjusting the coil till it glows evenly.

With the silica, your coils are likely to tight and choking the wick causing dry hits. Using a needle or paperclip along the length of the wick while wrapping the coil around, then pulling it out after wrapped, can help from getting the wraps to tight. Personally I use micro coils and hemp fiber or cotton for wick, makes for a very consistent build and a great vape.

I have issues still getting a good SS setup going so rely on silica U wicks to get almost the same out of a genny as the ss, I tend to add a "tigers tail" into the third open hole to assist wicking which is spliced in with the U wick itself, to be honest ribbon does seem to produce the better hit but it dries my wicks out a touch quick whereas good ol' 32g seems to keep up nicely with the flow so to speak and I get good hit and steam.

I found my Kraken to be immensely airy as its a clone so I found a spare O ring for one of the tanks I have and used that to block the air off that was seeping up through the gap between glass and shield, enormous improvement but it is a cheap 13 dollar clone so wasn't expecting awesomeness without a touch of remedial work hehe. Protective oil is something that really needs to come off and taking the unit apart and really getting into the crevices etc is something important as they taste awful until you do, I removed the O rings as well as the seatings always have a good dollop of oil under there, drop a bit of ejuice into the channel before replacing the O rings to keep it live and then a drop of ejuice either smeared inside the glass tube or on the rings themselves will allow mishap free sliding of the glass tube (gently gently) over the rings and maintains a positive seal.

Nemesis is a damned good choice for a mod, I cannot speak highly enough of that, I have the Vaporbreak mixed Nemesis clone and it is such a trooper, just knocks everything else I have including a Kmax into second place, it is worth disassembling and polishing everything in side the Nemesis to get the max out of it, magnet mod helps a lot too to get rid of crunchy buttons. I used a metal wadding polish on mine and it looks like its covered in wet glass and the whole thing just shines.

Next suggested choice of atty has to be a KFL type if you find you don't get on with a genny, its almost like its designed for the Nemesis and I used a navy nest build on mine and its still just awesome and you can get a cheap version like FastTechs Rocket for little over 10 dollars.
