Here are some pics of build #4:

The mathematics of your situation:
4mm mandrel, 28g a1, 9wraps, 17.35ohms/meter, pi=3.14, 2 6mm(est) legs to reach the posts
Applied:
4mm x 3.14 x 9 + (2x6)= x
17.35/x = actual resistance
125.04mm = .12504 m
.12504x17.35=2.17 ohms
2.17 ohms @ 4v =7.37 watts over a larger than usual surface area will result in a weak vape at best. You have a hot spot where the kanthal is shorting and burning (horrid metallic death taste) you are vaping kanthal not juice so much.

Suffice to say you will need a smaller mandrel (thing you wrapped your coil around initially) in the 1.5 to 2mm range for best results unless you plan on quad coils and wrapping a little more consistently.

Quad coil,Same coil x 4 math:
2.17/4= .5425ohms or 29.49 watts based on a 4v battery after voltage loss.
29.49 w is awesome.

I just got my reo a week ago - first thing I did was drill the stock hole bigger and make a matching hole lined up on the other side of the cap . At first I built dual fat coils that looked similar to yours and stuffed it with cotton and I wasn't getting the best vape , I then built some micro coils used the metal end of a plastic juice bottle put very lil cotton and I cliped the ends where they barely touching the deck of the rm2. Im getting great taste at .2 ohm and it hits hard. Try micro coil with minium cotton and make sure its right by your air hole as mentioned I don't put the coil directly on top of the feed hole on the deck I align it where half the coil covers half the whole if that makes sense , I noticed the more you have to sqounk inbetween vapes the better the taste will be so keep it light with cotton.

Just wanted to update you guys. I tried one last build, and I think I got it to work. Build is same as before, 1.4 ohm, 28g kanthal, 9 wraps on a 2.34mm drill bit and organic cotton wick cut short. When I went in there, the post on the right (fill hole facing towards me) was a little loose again. This time, before building, I cleaned it really well again, then took some compressed air and blew it out really well. Not sure, but it seemed like that post seated a little better than before. Now it seems to be vaping well. So I'm wondering if a little piece of metal left over from the machining was under there? Whatever it was, it seems better now.

I'll take it with me today, along with a backup, and see how she does. Will let you know.

Thanks again for all the help troubleshooting guys!

Yup, seems to be working fine now. Thanks again guys.

The positive is that I learned a lot about building coils for this thing in the process of troubleshooting. That's a great tip muzichead - I had considered distance from deck effected th, but not distance from airhole. Makes lot of sense. I think I'm going to go build a REAL coil for this thing when I get home tonight ;-)

I had this same problem a week ago and what fixed it for me was unscrewing both posts from the RM@ and then unscrewing the ceramic deck as well

I tried to disassemble my RM2
Didn't get anywhere by turning the positive contact
Now I need to get it apart to make sure everything inside is OK
Is there anything I should know before I try again
1) Remove posts
2) Unscrew ceramic deck

Will I have any trouble putting it back together?
I don't know whats under the ceramic deck

Just make sure to be gentle with the posts when applying pressure with pliers. I went a little overboard this morning and broke one of mine - I totally demolished it in the pliers. I grabbed it too high on the post and squeezed too hard, This sucks - now I'm back to dripping in my old Igo-L until my new RM2 arrives. A REOnaut without his (or her) REO is a lonely, depressing place to be.
