well when I started (still new), i had wanted to quit smoking for a long time, the shortness of breath was terrible compounded with asthma and that's just a bad recipe all by itself. I started with 24 mg and i been there since, have yet to try to go down but am considering it. That being said i just quit right out the gate, i vaped a lot the first month till i got the technique down, sure i got some nicotine headaches but i didn't experience a single withdraw symptom. My best advice is if its something u really wanna do, then do it the benefits far outweigh even the possibility of withdraws for me at least it wasn't very hard, tried a cigarette recently and i have to say it was the most terrible foul tasting thing i have ever had, i honestly have no clue how i even started. That only compounded the fact that i wanted to quit smoking not only for myself but for the people around me, and i have already converted 3 of my close friends successfully. Just do what u gotta do, be it smoking here and there while u make the switch over, or stopping completely, as long as u go in with the drive to do it, you should be just fine.

Welcome Melissa and congratz on making the decision. Several things to consider: First, I don't know how much you smoke, nor what kind of PV you have (I try very hard not to call them ecigs for political reasons, lol), but it might not be sufficient. If you find that they don't completely get rid of the cravings, don't give up. That's one of the things this forum's set up for, to help you figure out what you need. But remember: any cigarette you don't smoke is a victory!

I've tried many methods to quit smoking and first of all let me tell you that while people's experiences vary in terms of how challenging they find switching to vaping, vaping is by far the easiest way to quit smoking. I agree with bic, what you want to do is make sure you are getting enough nic even if you get headaches or nausea, because if you don't get enough nic, you probably won't make it, or you will have a lot tougher time.

So if you are having trouble, always consider higher nic before you give up. I'd in fact recommend that everyone looking to quit has some 36 mg juice on hand, you may or may not want to vape this strength continually, but at least have some to go to when you get the craving for an analog.

I spent over a year trying to quit but I didn't give up and I just recently finally made it. I am off the things for good and never want to smoke again. So hopefully you will find it easier than I did, but the key is to keep working at it and realize that sooner or later you are going to have to bite the bullet a bit at least, and it might as well be right now. Otherwise you are putting off the inevitable really. So best of luck!

Firstly, don't start with 0 nicotine in your ecig. I made that mistake. lol! Start with a high mg nico content (24ish?)to start with until you get the hang of vaping, and start 'trusting' your PV to take care of your nico needs. You can always lower the nico content down the road like I did. You'll be WONDERFULLY amazed at how easy it is after you start. If you start vaping and drop the analogs completely, that's great! Alot of people have done that. But if you vape and continue to smoke a few for awhile, don't feel bad or put yourself down AT ALL! You WILL get to the point where you no longer want that nasty cigarette!

My name is Melissa.. 41 yr old. I love in Houston, Texas.. I am a dog groomer.. Have had my e cig a while but really have not used it. I am tired of being out of breath so I am picking a date to use my e cig. Any suggestions on how to be successful at this is appreciated..

Don't go in assuming it will be really hard to switch from cigarettes to PV. I would also suggest you don't decide to "stop smoking and start vaping" in a day. You might want to try vaping without making a decision to stop smoking immediately. Have a cigarette when you really want one, while you sort out a juice flavor and PV setup you like. My suggestion would be to let the quitting smoking happen naturally - vape when you feel like smoking and see if you still have cravings. Some people taper off, some people (I was one of those fortunate ones) just don't really want a cigarette any more, fairly soon after starting to vape. And I was a "dyed in the wool" 1.5+ PAD smoker for over 30 years. :)

First and foremost, make sure you use a liquid with enough nicotine. If you were a heavy smoker, you probably want at least 18mg, maybe even 24. Also, keep plenty of equipment on hand. If something goes wrong with something, you don't want to have nothing else available to use. You want at least two batteries....actually, probably three unless you have a big battery mod like an EGO. You want a bunch of whatever juice delivery system you're going to use....it'll probably be cartos. You want a bunch because they do die eventually, but it's anyone's guess when; could last 3 days, could last a month or more. Keep plenty of juice on hand too. It won't do to run out. It's better to have too much, than not enough; you'll use it eventually anyway.

Last, be aware that even with an ecig, it may still be a challenge to quit. Your body has to detox from all the nasty stuff you've put into it, some people feel little to nothing, some people feel awful during the detox. Just be aware of that. Coughing, lung irritation, break outs, and an overall feeling of ickness is normal, don't fret. The nicotine you'll get with ecigs also isn't quite as efficient at absorbing than analogs, and isn't exactly the same. This will take an adjustment period. Give yourself a good two weeks before you decide that ecigs aren't for you. That's about how long it'll take you to get over the worst of the detox, and it'll give you some time to adjust.

Also, don't get down on yourself if you slip up and have an occasional cigarette. This is a marathon, not a sprint. If it takes you a while to give up the cigs completely, that's okay. If you have to gradually cut back your cigs, while vaping more and more, that's okay too. Every cigarette avoided should be celebrated.

Wow, you're waiting to pick a date... I RIPPED my ecig mail open when I got mine! :)
I say just jump into it and see how it goes. My first hit was like, "yeah, this is gonna work!"

• I smoked menthol lights for 30 years, so I started with 12mg menthol prefilled cartos (but have since stepped it down to 4-6, and moved on to dessert flavors after just a few weeks).
• I started with V2 gear (but 3 months later discovered that Smokeless Image is soooo much better).

I guess some important things to know are:
Like your gear. If the one you have just isn't hitting right, try another (haha, I highly recommend SI).
Have enough gear to keep it going. There's nothing worse than having a battery die without a backup (some can take 3+ hours to recharge), or running out of cartos/liquid only to find that it's out of stock. I would suggest at least 3 batteries (one you're using, one on standby, one on the charger) and enough cartos/liquid for 2+ weeks to start.
Get your nic strength right. 6+mg for UltraLights, 12mg for Lights, 18-24mg for Regulars. Up it if it's not satisfying your cravings.
Vaping is a much slower delivery method than smoking. Give yourself time to get used to it. Nice thing is, you can vape all you want/need to, and your body will tell you when it's getting too much nic. You vape and you vape cuz nothing's happening, then BAM! Too much! You must listen to those symptoms (pounding headaches, palpitations, nausea, etc.) and adjust your timing accordingly.
Get used to drinking water. Dehydration from the liquid is very common and can contribute to any discomfort you might go through.
Be in the right frame of mind. If you go into it thinking "I gotta give up cigarettes," eventually you'll feel deprived and you'll just want it even more. But if you go into it thinking "I don't smoke anymore. I vape now," you take away that feeling of deprivation, and the transition might be a little smoother (it was for me - YMMV). Think of vaping as a "loophole " to smoking - you're still doing it, but you're not.

You'll be going through some withdrawals (there's a lot of other crap in cigarettes than nic), but weather through them the best you can, because they don't really last that long (maybe a couple of weeks). Once you're over the hump and you get used to vaping, it gets a lot easier. You might even get to the point where you find analogs gross and nasty. But don't kick yourself if you need one from time to time - every analog skipped is an analog skipped.

The rewards are better health, higher lung capacity (within weeks!), and you won't get winded every time you have to chase all those dogs around!

Good luck! :)
