I was just wondering why the manual instructs, for first time use, that the battery be charged for 8 hours, even after the light on the charger turns green, then to use it for 30 min, then charge again for one more hour? What purpose does such a long process serve?

And, if I may add another question, why should one then never charge for more than 3 hours thereafter?

TIA

Those 'instructions' are a hold over from earlier rechargeable batteries and don't apply to lithium ion batteries. The battery is charged once the light turns green and it shouldn't take three hours to charge so you can ignore that last part as well.
