Hi all,
Scubabatdan and I have been working on this calculator and we have decided that it is time to "release it into the wild". When you write software you know exactly what is supposed to go where and why. However the users often have different ideas. Therefore we need users to use it to find out how well it works " in the wild".

This is an Excel spreadsheet(Excel 2007). The workbook contains two worksheets. The first worksheet contains the calculator and the second worksheet has directions. I strongly urge people to print the directions. It wasn't so easy importing them into the spreadsheet from Word and they are not easy to read on the worksheet.

If you find any errors, or if you find that the directions don't make sense (I wrote the directions, so don't worry about insulting Dan), please respond in this thread or PM me (Springbird).

I finally figured out how to attach a file, but there is something here that says " if file is not downloaded in 1 hour it will be deleted. I find this worrisome. If it doesn't exist please let me know.

If you have trouble opening it in an older version of Excel, I can save it as an earlier version and re-post it. Let me know if this is an issue.

Our hope is that folks find this useful, so please give us feedback.

I did save it as a xls (1997-2003) file so it is compatible with all versions of excel on the last review. This was a fun collaberation. It is not locked in any way so make sure you dont enter anything in the gray blocks or you will wipe out the formulas. I really liked trying new things with the nested IF statements.
Hope yall like it, and hope it is useful to someone!
I will probably incorporate this into the Main Calculator.

The nested IFs are very cool. It took me 15 minutes to figure out what he had done and how it worked. I had to write it out in a different language(C++) to figure it out.

Edit: Sometimes it takes complicated code to make an application easier to use. The above reference to nested IF statements is about some pretty crafty code that Dan wrote to make the spreadsheet do what it does while keeping it simple for the user. The worksheet itself has a very clean, easy interface but behind this simple facade lies some difficult work.

Dan,

I have not viewed this calc yet. I am quite please with what mine does. I am always looking for a better mouse trap though. Have you thought of simplifying yours? Like I said I have not viewed this collaboration. I am only going on what you posted. So my question is an honest one. Do you envision integrating lessons learned in simplifying yours. I'm not even sure I am saying this right, but I know you can catch my drift, I think. I watched the development of your calc from page one. Where I am getting at is with all the improvements out there, is there a way to build a better mouse trap, not unlike building attys for the lack of a better explanation. As we both know they have come a looooooong way. This is by no means a put down of the wonderful contributions you have made and continue to do for the community. Just an honest question!

Any way to simplify the code and do everthing everyone wants is dificult.I think this is a great tool for those that have moved past the need to figured out their flavoring and just want a quick calculation as to the ratios needed to make the juice. To build a better mouse trap is to constantly make improvments. By doing these type of colaborations it helps to use more than one person and see what others come up with collectively. Alot of the calculations I can see being incorporated into the main calculator. The problem is where one thinks it is too simple others view it as to complicated, apeasing everone is near immposible but I will take stride to make it mor simplified.
This answer help LOL

As always Dan your collaborations are always appreciated. I abstained from viewing the calc, so I could ask an unbiased question. In retrospect I should have viewed it first, my bad. I support your argument 100%. You can please most people most of the time but it is impossible to please all people all of the time.

I don't do any DIY, but I can confirm that even for the untrained eye, this works.

It does the math for you and takes any guess work out of calculations.

I do like how it balances everything out, while accounting for any/all difference in levels of PG/VG in the flavouring, nic, or bases.

Good job, guys!

Two different computers with two different O/S's and both using OpenOffice. File will open, but will not save....OO locks up every time.

Strange, I did not have any such problem. Have you tried downloading the file first, and then opening it instead of opening it first and then saving it?

I've tried every variation I can think of....all with the same result; program locks immediately. I'm running OO 3.2.0 Build 9483 on both machines. Can't figure out why there's such a hard error. Here's exactly what it's doing: Open the file. Click "save as" to rename it and store in another location. Immediate program lock. No chance to save in another format or rename or anything.

Ummmm, weird. I run Ubuntu Intrepid with OO and have no problem opening the file and saving it as either xls or ods

I just looked at google docs. It looks like we could upload the workbook and publish the website address so that all could use it. I like that folks would not need to have Excel installed and maybe could access it by cell phone. I will check with Dan. I think that he is thinking of adding this to his original calculator, that was our intent when we wrote it. That calculator is stickied at the top of this forum. I don't know if he wants to publish on google docs. He is an IT professional and I do this as a hobby ( I have a degree in Comp Sci but I have been using the degree to teach math). I don't know if he has constraints or concerns about where or what he publishes.

I don't know why it won't save in Open Office. I am using Office 2007, I'm not sure what Dan is using but he saved it as a .xls so that it would open in older versions of Excel.

Thanks for the feedback it will help to make the final version better.:)
