About to venture into the DIY arena and have been voraciously reading all the suggested posts, blogs, tips & tricks thread, etc. Also have had an ultrasonic cleaner for forever for speed-steeping. Have the E-juice Calculator and have played with it to understand it, although my DIY should be pretty darn easy: VG base, no nicotine, PG-free flavors.

My question is about suggested flavor percentages. I have read some that say the percentages don't change, steeping is the secret; and some who say they need to up the flavors for all VG. As a background profile, I'm in the camp who doesn't think AiV liquids are subtle and they have been my preferred vendor for some time. So as a general consensus, I'm guessing that when I start the DIY, I should subscribe to the "follow suggested percentages and steep" and go from there?

I guess I'm just basically looking for confirmation that I'm on the right track. :)

Taste is completely subjective. The only PG I use ends up being about 15% total, just to keep the consistency a tad more fluid. I use PG based nic and most of my flavors are PG based. That being said, my mixes are all 70-85% VG. It really depends on who you use for your flavors, but I find that most of the time the recomended percentages are either too strong, or just right for heavy VG mixes. In my opinion, the only way VG hinders flavor is if you run below 8watts. Ofcourse, YMMV

You are correct start the DIY, "follow suggested standared percentages and steep" and go from there?

The type of base you use either all VG or all PG or a combination of the 2 should not have an influence on the amount of flavor you add. The only thing that the type of base will influence is how long it will take to mix and steep. High VG bases will take longer to mix and steep because

1. VG is not a great disipator or disolver of flavor molecules But flavor will eventually distribute through the entire mix it will just take more time
2. It is a much thicker fluid so flavoring takes longer to move through it

But flavor will eventually meld with the base. So extra flavor is a mith and not needed

What will help the spread, mixing and melding of flavor as well as steeping is heat. The recommended temperature up to now has been 120F but very recent new thinking and testing has raised this limit to 150F. That along with a good shaking will speed up this process. Combining this with a good vibrating or ultrasonic cleaner will reduce the mixing and steeping time even more.

just take the plunge and do it...you wont be disappointed....start with small 3 ML batches using different concentrations of flavoring and simple mixes...also dont forget the distilled water since you are going 100% VG
