Hello, all ! New to these forums and ecigs. I've been smoking for 15 years. Fairly young at 25, but like many started out by stealing smokes from my parents as a little girl. I was addicted by the time I started high school. Started buying by the carton at 16, up to two packs a day by 18. In the last few years, it hasn't been unusual for me to smoke three packs on lazy days in front of the computer.

I have had chronic bronchitis since I was 18. I also have sinus issues. No one's body likes cig smoke, but mine especially seems to hate me for smoking. Both grandfathers, one grandmother, five aunts, and one uncle all have died of lung cancer. I also have an aunt with emphysema. My grandmother made it to 70; everyone else died in their 40's. This terrifies me. Two years ago I watched my mother's youngest sister die in hospice at the age of 41. No one in my immediate family has gotten cancer, thank God, and I hope it stays that way.

A few weeks back I became really ill. A cold turned into both walking pneumonia and a sinus infection. I know I never would have gotten so sick had I not been a smoker and already been dealing with chronic bronchitis. Every time I get a cold, I'm in hell compared to a non-smoker and it lasts four times longer. I'm over the infections, but I still have the sniffles and crap in my chest.

When at my sickest, I wasn't able to smoke. I've chain-smoked with strep throat before, so this was new for me. I literally could not do it. One puff and my sinuses and lungs were on fire and I was hacking. My boyfriend brought home a disposable ecig for me one night, and it was wonderful. I bought nicotine lozenges when the disposable stopped working, and ordered a Titan mega 510 from Totally Wicked as well. I did try a few real cigarettes when I got better, but for the first time in 10 years I can actually smell and taste my cigarettes and they are...DISGUSTING. I decided that forcing myself to smoke them was extremely stupid, and that now is the time to give quitting a try. Am I trading one habit for another? Sure. Perhaps cold turkey is the best way to quit, but I can't stand the withdrawal from nicotine and I can't imagine not having at least a gum or lozenge for the oral fixation.

Anyway, I've had my 510 for a few days now and no desire for an analog at all. With the lozenge I was still attempting to smoke one or two a day. I hope that this continues to work well for me. I'm aware that PG can cause some irritation. My question at the moment is this : How likely is it that the ecig will continue to cause me issues with chronic bronchitis? Anyone out there dealing with this? I tend to puff on my 510. I don't really inhale because it does make me cough. I've read most of the nicotine from vapor gets absorbed in the mouth anyway. It must be true, because I'm not withdrawing at all. Anyone out there find that the vapor exacerbates pre-existing lung issues like mine? Would VG be a good idea for me? Is it less irritating? I'm not having any problems yet but I'm worried I'm going to still have my smoker's cough with this since I already have damage and inflammation chronically in my lungs.

Propylene Glycol (PG) has antiseptic properties. Is used in hospitable to treat the air you breath while your there?
1 .5 g in 100 ml water; sol. in alcohols, glycerol, propylene glycol, ... hospital disinfectants.
further studies showed inactivation of diverse bacteria, influenza virus, and Penicillium chrysogenum (previously P. notatum) mold fungus using various glycols, principally propylene glycol (found in e cig)and triethylene glycol (not found in e cigs). PG is used in so many things. From mouthwash to skin care to the prepossessed food we eat.

I'm not an expert and remain rather healthy. My household (4 PPL) got the flu big time. I the one to care for all being sick at once and the only one vaping, never got sick. *shrugs* Maybe it wasn't the PG but studies out there have me wandering....
I don't know what I'm putting in me or how the long term will look. But not smoking is by far the best thing I could have ever done for myself. Welcome to ECF I think you'll get a lot of responses here, we all have own opinion and are more then willing to share. This is only one of them and not a definite answer...

Most people will find that they are much much healthier than when they smoked cigs, also many people find that common illnesses that they assumed were just a part of life (annual flues or allergies or chest colds) suddenly disappear when they start vaping. IMO, using an e-cig is likely to save your life (from what you say in your post it seems that way to me).

Good luck and welcome to the forum! :) I would not be surprised at all if your days of lung illnesses are over.

You're on the right track.

After 7 ½ months I no longer carry the Halls cough drops (had to have them in my pocket, car, brief case for backup). I’m not out of breath after walking up to the 3rd floor. Sadly, my taste has return and my doctor is giving me lots of hell over not losing that last 25 lbs. My allergies are a lot better too… I didn’t have my annual cold or bronchitis either. I smoked for 38 years and don’t ever plan to go back.

Good luck and keep at it – it does take time to find the comfort zone, but it’s worth it.

Welcome!

I recommend you get some juices with at least 30% VG (70pg/30vg) and if you feel any irritation from that then you could try ratios with higher VG.

For most people PG itself is not the issue but rather how little PG buffers the skin irritation of nicotine. 70pg/30vg is a popular ration - it will cut the TH a bit and smooth out any irritation while adding more visible and persistent vapor. It's my favorite ratio.

My sinuses were bad for the last decade and cleared up when I started vaping. I woke up with a clear nose and not coughing. My nose rarely gets stuffed or or runny any more and previously it was always one or the other. My breathing is better too.

I've suffered with chronic bronchitis for many years, and although I've only been vaping for 4 months, I did not get my usual bout of bronchitis this winter (knock on wood). I don't know if it can be attributed to not smoking analogs any more, but I'm really happy about not getting it! It's miserable. Like you, I could not smoke at all when I had bronchitis; it was impossible to do without coughing up a lung. I've also been able to stop taking my asthma medicine, which tells me things are on the mend. My sinus issues have improved at least 60% (vaping didn't help with allergies!). I hope it works out for you, too.

Welcome subversive! Let me tell you something...

I smoked at least a pack per day, sometimes more, for over 30 years. I had problems with chronic bronchitis, sinus infections and I was on my way to emphysema and probably COPD. I'm only 45 years old. That's far too young to be having that much trouble. Since I started vaping I haven't had one sinus infection or bout of bronchitis. My lungs are clearing up, I no longer cough in the morning and my doctor says that my chest x-rays are clear. I've started working out and tonight I did almost 2 miles in 20 minutes on the elliptical machine. That's a huge change from barely being able to make it up the stairs six months ago.

Vaping is the best thing I've ever done for myself and it has allowed me to do the one thing I thought I never could; Quit smoking!

Welcome to ECF Sub!!

I have emphysema from smoking for 30 years. The scariest part of it was when I would lie down for bed at night, it felt like someone was sitting on my chest and wasn't letting my lungs expand. I would have to raise my arms up to give my lungs enough room to breathe.

That all stopped in the 2nd week of using Ecigs! No more suffocation feelings! And I can sing along with the radio and do not get dizzy now:) The Ecigs have improved my lungs and my life in so many ways. They are a miracle, in my opinion. I never thought I could quit smoking without pain and suffering:)

I also have had chronic bronchitis, I started smoking at 13 (now am 55) so it has been 42 years? started vaping last spring and have not had problems since. I also watched my baby brother die from cancer ( actually from chemo though the cancer would have done it soon after) in hospice 36 days after he was diagnosed with the cancer so I understand what that was like. I also think that my brother started smoking because he watched me doing it and that kills me. my father has had lung cancer and bone cancer and has beat both and still alive and he never smoked.
While vaping may not be completly healthy it is far better than smoking and most of the people here believe that switching to the e-cig has improved their health and i agree with that so you are on the right path, just try to stay on it (I don't always, we are not perfect or this forum would not exist). Good luck with your vaping experiment.

Thanks everyone for the replies, they've been encouraging! Glad to hear so many with respiratory issues doing well on these. Hopefully soon my coughing will go away and my sinuses will feel better. Would be nice if I could get my mother to give these a try as well. I worry a lot about her because of what has happened to so many members of her family. She's in her 60's and hasn't had any real issues; hopefully it stays that way. She truly hates smoking, but can't seem to quit.

puppythor - sorry to hear about your brother. that must have been terrible. amazing that your father was able to recover. i hope he continues to do well and that you continue to do well with the ecigs.

That is awesome!! I am curious to know what your DR has said about it.

I have suffered with chronic asthmatic bronchitis since I was 17 (before I started smoking) and the past 2 winters are the first since then that I haven't spent the entire winter sick. Before I started vaping if one of the kids or hubby brought home a cold I would be sick for months. Other than one bout of the flu that took forever to go away (they think it was swine flu, but so many people have had it here that they don't even bother to test and assume it is), I haven't had a cold or anything that lasted more than a few days. I used to only be able to breath in for about 4 seconds and since vaping I can reach about 15 seconds of inhaling. I've also had a chest x-ray recently for something else and my lungs look fine. I think you'll find that you feel better than you have felt in years.

Subversive, I highly encourage you to try and get your mom aboard this train! I've tried the patch, the gum and Zyban. None of them worked. I'm allergic to the patch and the gum made me sick. Zyban just turned me into a brainless zombie, so I quit taking it and started smoking again. Vaping the ONLY thing that has worked for me. Period. Like I said, it wasn't my intention to quit by swtiching. I really didn't think it would work and I just wanted something I could use in the house because we have a "no indoor smoking" clause. But when I got my Riva, I just quit. I didn't even think about it until a couple of days later. I only went through a few days of coughing that cleared out my lungs and I had one day of fatigue where I slept almost all day. That was it for withdrawal (YMMV of course!) Six months later I'm still smoke free and loving it! This is the BEST I've felt in over a decade!

Maybe if your mom sees how well it will work for you, she could be tempted to try it.
