[IMO] There's no such thing as a long life to coils. Things to factor are how often you're using it & the type of juice you're using (some gunk up the coils faster than others). If you're using a RBA you can switch out coils as often as you like. If you're using coil heads you can always wash them out really really good & allow them to dry. I give mine a 190-proof Everclear bath.

I've yet to pop a coil in the eGrip RBA. I have rewicked though numerous times after dry burning the coil itself. After briefly experimenting with the factory coil wick assemblies the only coil change I've made is to try one that I wound. Been using that one now for two weeks or so with a wick change yesterday. Mine get a lot of use.

Cigatron: I would like a tension winding jig... if there is such a thing. I think you've mentiones it somewhere... I think my fiance could be able to make one, if I knew what to tell him I need. However buying one might be a better choice! Any suggestions? Please :)

VJ....this is where I got my idea from....works great, can turn out a coil in a minute (I did 6 in about 10mins), VERY easy !
I'm using a brazing rod (brass, bends easy) added a screw with a washer and nut, a piece of 3/4" plywood (roughly about 3"x5") , and drilled a hole in one end for the rod.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP6QO-nOnbI

I lay the wire across the top, keep pressure on wire with thumb, crank the handle. (10 turns on a 2mm rod or 8 turns on a 2.5mm rod....both using 28ga Kanthral A1) Cut legs to length, bend 90's with tweezers to match stock coils. ;)

Your simple and good looking jig is awesome. And if you add just the right amount of drag you will definitely get the wind to "sticky" (adhesion, closest proximity) as I describe above.

Thanks SW for this excellent idea.

Good luck!

:)

I do see the sense in the tension coiling, and will be reading up on it this afternoon - but wondering if my success with the spaced coils isn't an anomaly due to my higher VG content? The juice has the ability to flow through the coil?

Yes juice, if not up to vaporization temperature, will exit the wick and coil turns. Better still if it's arrived there. It's heated unvaporized juice that tends to gunk things.

And yes, if you up your VG content you'll get more vapor.

Hope you'll try tension. It's a method that improves the reliability of a wind and since you're building to a metric, you can duplicate the build you got last week. Regardless of the type of wind you like. Most all, including open winds, can benefit from the stability tension builds into the wire. That's the point, it's a scientific method…not a preference, not a style or a type. Although I have identified several techniques of winds that enhance tensioned results. But these can be applied to any multi-wire coil.

Hail me on the threads I mentioned earlier if you need a hand.

Good luck.

:)

Okay guys... I got past the burnt issue by using MORE wick! Amazing how easily that solved my problem :) unfortunately I ended up with muted flavor. Actually muted is an understatement. It was darn near flavorless :( I solved that problem this morning but I am positive it was a temporary fix. I pulled the coil base back out, lifted the wick and trimmed around the edges a bit and poof, flavor is back to yummy... sooooo, I have enough wick through the coil itself to keep from burning but too much wick in the 'juice well'... hmmm ??? I know y'all probably have an easy solution? I hope so anyway... lol
Now for coil building... I showed my fiance the jigs you guys use, I also explained my understanding of how to use tension to get a perfect coil. Being able to explain it felt good because that means I actually am starting to UNDERSTAND it... woohooo... (he doesn't vape anymore and when he did, I maintained his gear, all the way down to making sure his batteries got charged at night) Now he is on a mission to build me a jig. :) We are also getting the table mounted wire coiling jig this weekend. Going to get wing nut, washers and a thumb screw :) I should be learning to make wonderful, useable coils by Saturday evening :) Thank you to all who helped get rid of my burning issue and showing me that I can try make my own coils for this lil mod that I am very fond of... There is a light at the end of my tunnel :) -I'm so excited... (said in a singing voice!) I've been vaping for a while and I have wanted to successfully wind my own coils since about 2 months in!!!

So Cal
I've actually wanted one of these since the day they came out. Mostly just to take out of house to work and around town running errands. It's just so small and also has a rba section! >.< at some point in time I'm going to get one.

How does one go about cleaning one of these though? Looks like it might be tuff...

It's very hard to change flavor profiles in these. You can swish water through the tank (or vodka) but you can't get anything in the USB port - which is tricky. I find that if I keep the flavor profile the same I can just swap juice. But I'd never use cinnamon or tobacco unless the tank was going to be dedicated to those flavor types!

Yes you want a thick wick but not very long. Too long and the juice and wick choke the airflow.

FYI - I got a second rba a couple of weeks ago and on the installed factory coil/wick assembly the wick only extended about 3/16" past the coil windings and performed excellently. When rewicking I've since duplicated that wick length with excellent results. I got some 'blue box' Japanese cotton from somebody and that's been better wick material than what comes with the eGrip rba in my experience.

I have no complaints with the eGrip when equipped with the rba. It is now my preferred device. My 30W iStick runs a very close second.

Can he make me one too :)

Once the coil comes of the jig, does it still need compressing or altering or is it just good to go?

It comes off the jig tight... my first coil off this looked better and heated better than ANY coil I have ever wound by hand!!! I am seriously amazed at how awesome this works. How simple it is to use... Tim (my soon to be hubby) used half a spool of wire last night playing around with it... it makes coil winding FUN! Maybe getting him involved like this will be the key to getting him vaping again and finally let go of stinkies for good!

Congrats and I'm sure the gratitude is appreciated. Let us know when you get "sticky".

:D

Good luck!
