Howdy folks!

Tried to post this in the Canada forum, but I'm too new! Has anyone tried rope from:

Browsing Shop - 3/32 WIRE 7X19 316 SS TRANSAT WIRE

There is another post (again, in the Canada forum), that mentions it, but not one talks about results... my question: Has it passed the magnet test? I'm not in Toronto, so I'd need to order some.

Great forum you've got here- I've been using it to get started, and it's time I started giving back :)

I'm not sure what the magnet test is but I've been using it for a little over a week now and I'm in love with the stuff.

There is a learning curve a little bit since you don't need to tilt nearly as much as with mesh other wise you'll flood. But this stuff wicks juice up better than any mesh wick I've ever rolled. That may just be me but even so I definitely prefer it.

Sorry for the vague info guys- look at all these speedy replies!!!

I've seen in some other threads that Galvanized SS rope shouldn't be used. we need the non-galvanized stuff for this purpose. A magnet, (allegedly), will only stick to galvanized SS - thus if it sticks- it shouldn't be wick.

I just realized I have no source - if any of you pro's can contradict this- I'd be happy to take your opinion over my own "I read it somewherez on the internets!"

any stainless steel that is in the 300 series is austenitic and non magnetic, meaning it cannot be picked up by a magnet unless its has been heavily transformed. i know you shouldn't heat anything galvanized and inhale it. galvanized means a zinc coating to protect the substrate, zinc fume is toxic. I also wouldnt use this generic 316 SS transat cable/wire, if there really is an application for heating stainless steel might i suggest 316L -ESR or VAR/VIM or "medical grade" these are much cleaner grades of this corrision resistant steel with very limited inclusions - this will be safer vape. So you are using this for your wick?

This is really the answer I was looking for. This link was provided on the Canada section of the forum, and apparently there's at least one member using this stuff very successfully. I'll keep an eye out for the 316L - it's just often tough to find a supplier in Canada.

Thanks!

If you can find a supplier of marine equipment, most of the salt water cable is 316 of some sort or another. I nabbed some 316, 305 and 302 7 by 7 stranded wire for experimenting from McMaster-Carr.

Please be carefull when you dont know the process by which the steel was made, marine grade is not electro slag remelted or surgical grade, not vacuum induction remelted, or vacuum arc remelted, it may have lots of inclusions (bad/dirty particles) that could migrate, or even separate from use in a PV. remember nickel is an allergen that is contained all 300 series grades, i am only afraid of reactions from e-juice and using SS wire as wick in close promimity to a resistance wire. there are top notch steel plants in the USA that make these grades ATI, haynes, Allvac. now i will better inform myself on what companies make this kind of wicking material before i make anymore statements.

Excellent point. I haven't been able to find any direct information on inhalation hazards of various steels over time under conditions that vaping would put a ss wire wick. I'm not sure if the steel is stable at these temperatures nor what changes might occur. There's always a non-zero risk factor in untried methods.

That being said, I bought a bunch of wire and I'm planning on setting up a ss wire genny shortly...
