Sup everyone..I was seeking help for my little problem and ran across this forum so here I am. I started vaping about 2 months ago..I walked into a store to buy a starter pen and ended up getting the kangertech ipow 2 with the protank 2. 3 days later, I walked into another store and got talked into upgrading to an eleaf Istick 30w and the memo tank. I was very satisfied for a little while. My main juice was swirly pop menthol from mad scientist and it always worked fine. But any other juice I try seems to give me really burnt hits and the coils may (at best) last 2 days. I switched to the .5 ohm aspire coils and I get better taste but the coil still burns up just as quick. I've tried every combination of VG/PG and I just don't get it. Could it be anything other than the tank or the juice? Could the battery cause this at all? I'm a newb to this bare with me lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds odd..
What sort of power are you vaping at (watts)?
and your tank? (Melo? Memo? Nemo?) :)
Lol, 25 watts and that was definitely suppose to say melo. I do chain vape and I can tell I need something with more power but I still don't think I over do it enough to burn 3 coils a week. After my juice and coils I'm spending 60 a week..I only spent 35 a week smoking :(

I usually vape with less than 10 watts. Anything higher always tastes burnt to me. Advice: Turn down your wattage.

The vast majority of vapers, according to the most recent polls, vape with less than 10 watts. Just because the hobbyists/enthusiasts use higher watts does not mean you need to. Use what works best for YOU.

I've already tried..then I'm stuck pulling 10 second hits trying to get a satisfying hit. I have noticed however that I got more satisfaction as far as nicotine from my kangertech with higher mg and lower watts but I felt like I was pulling in nothing but air. I like the big clouds, its relaxing to me.

Hi Reed. I'm not into cloud chasing or high wattage. However I do know that you can save money on your coils if you learn to wire and wick your own. Even the factory OCC's can be rebuilt. You tube has many video's on the subject, and I have found it to be relatively easy (Subtank Mini owner). The only other way I can see for you to save would be to try DIY juices (which can be expensive to start). Also there are inexpensive juice companies on the internet like Vape Wild, ITC vapes, and others, especially if you find a flavor you enjoy and buy in bulk. I wish you luck, it takes time to find YOUR stride in vape.

I was having that same burnt taste issue...I wish I had an answer for using a tank...

I solved mine by switching to a dripper (.5 ohm single coil usually running about 16 w for power) I get lots of cloud (amusing and relaxing to me) and have been able to drop my nic level gradually from 24 to 6 over the last two months.

You talking about an RDA? I was told they wouldn't work on my 30w istick

I'm not familiar with your tank, but I know that a number of brands of stock coils are problematic -- some are just poorly designed, others (ahem.. Kanger) are seriously inconsistent. You'll hear a lot of advice to build your own, and if you're into that, that's probably very good advice. I'm still looking for a good tank that handles high VG, gives good flavor, good thick vapor, and has consistently good stock coils. I know I'm asking a lot, but dang it... that's what I want LOL!

I doubt there's many stock coils that hold up well to chain vaping high VG juice, very sweet juice, or dark juice. But I'm still looking. I got lots of good advice here on ECF, but ultimately, we're all sooooo different, you kinda have to find your own way. The advice is always good for a starting point tho.

A few things to try :
- add a little distilled water to your juice (5-10%)
- turn the wattage down a bit
- (not sure if this applies to your device) use a sewing needle to poke a hole in the cotton wick
- make sure you're properly priming the coil, with additional priming when you're chain-vaping

I'm unclear on what equipment you're using. The Eleaf Melo right? But with aspire coils? Maybe try actual Eleaf coils built for it even if the aspire ones fit it. Also your airflow control can help. Too wide and sometimes not enough juice gets sucked into the wick and then you get burnt taste. Close it up too much and it creates too much suction and then it floods. So play around with that a bunch and see if it helps. The general rule of thumb with power is to start at the minimum it will do, and slowly work your way up. But you have the istick, so you can't start low. It says its on the lowest settings which is a flat out lie. It's basically at the medium settings. Honestly I don't even look at the numbers on my 20w one, I just hit the arrows until I get the vape I want. Because Eleaf thinks that being accurate in any way is a bad thing and prefers to just make up numbers on the fly for more fun. But hey, everyone uses it, and I do like my 20w even if I have issues with it. lol. So since you're a noob let's go through some other things you can do to try and problem solve, since everyone's advice here will just be "derp BUILD YER OWN!!!!!!!!!".

Once you put in a new coil make sure you prime it, put a few little drops on the holes of the coil on the side, and maybe even a drop down the tube into the inside.
Then let it sit for 15 minutes even though you want to pick it up right away.
After the time is up, set it to medium airflow and take a few long gentle puffs off of it without firing the battery. That'll make sure the wick is saturated.
Start at the lowest power setting you can (even if you have a an istick that pulls numbers out of it's ...) and slowly work your way up. Every coil, from kanger single coils to the the sub ohm ones are going to have a burn in period where it'll taste burnt even if you're using at the higher power levels you were just using on the coil you replaced. Sometimes it takes a tank worth of juice to slowly work back up, and back down if it's tasting off, then back up again to get where you really like it. Pain in the ... but you get used to it. And sometimes you find a new setting that makes it taste better.
Oh and run your battery in VW mode and not VV. VW gives you more room to maneuver as you can increase the wattage several increments without it going up in voltage.

Hope some of that may help. And welcome to the forums! Glad to have you here.

I'm unclear on what equipment you're using.

So am I... Melo is a sub-ohm tank, which means it comes with a sub-ohm coil, 0.5Ω, correct? Those coils, ironically, require more wattage than higher resistance coils because they are made out of thicker wire which takes longer to heat up and to cool down.

Now, are you using Aspire Atlantis coils in your Melo tanks? Maybe there's an issue with compatibility? I know that some people use Atlantis coils in Melos, but I know very little on the subject because I don't sub-ohm myself.

Generally, when you get dry hits (burnt, nasty taste) it's a wicking issue--IOW, your atomizer cannot wick your juice fast enough to the atomizing chamber because: your juice is too thick, you chain vape, your wattage is too high, or there's a problem with vacuum in your tank. Make sure that your coil is assembled properly in the base, all the gaskets are in place, there are no leaks anywhere, and that your airflow control is open--just for starters.

Good luck!

I'm using the melo tank but the aspire coils match up perfectly. There also .5 ohm. I get better flavor with the aspire coils honestly..I think it may just be my juice. All the juice I have is either really thin, or really, really thick. I just put a new coil in 6 hours ago and threw in some 99% VG juice. The coil already has a black ring. But there has only been 1 juice that doesn't do this and that's swirlypop from mad scientist. I believe its 60/40 VG/PG. Does that mean that's the only juice I can vape? I may just buy some VG and PG and level my juices out but that just seems like too much lol

Anyone got any suggestions on tanks for the istick? I want to upgrade slowly since I spent all my money on my small collection..figured I'd buy a better tank and then maybe upgrade to a more powerful box later.

Most definitely--get an Eleaf GS Air or Air M--the best tank going and ridiculously inexpensive--you can get one for under 10 bucks, 8 or 9 for a 5-pack of coils (which can easily be rebuilt). Sweet Vapes sells them. And if you want to know more about it:

I'm kind of wanting to stick to sub ohm..I'm think the kangertech subtank mini. I think I'd have fun with the rba but so many choices can get difficult. Its almost like having a smartphone addiction...by the time you choose something, something better has already come out. That's what sparked my hobbyists side of vaping. I need to know everything about everything about vaping lol.

Since you enjoy the hobby aspect, if you get something you can rebuild/learn to rebuild (RDA, RTA, newer subohm clearos with RBA section) you should be able to bring your costs for coils/wick down to essentially nothing, few bucks a year basically.

If you want to dive in head first in the hobby aspect, head over to the the DIY section of the forums and start learning how to DIY your own juices. After some initial investment and trial and error you should be able to easily bring your juice costs down to less that $0.10 a ml.

Heres one of the better places to grab a subtank mini, if that interests ya, competitive price and free shipping, he also ships quick.

There is no secret combination or setup.
What works best for one may not work very good at all for another.

Tanks and coils along with their wicking performance have to be appreciated for what they are... some are better than others for different reasons... accepting the pros and cons of each is essential. Not all tanks can wick high VG juice very well. Personally I find most of the off the shelf coils and tanks vape 50/50 VG/PG very well. Going higher than 50VG and certainly above 70VG will definitely start to give some tanks problems, especially if chain vaping.

You don't need a high power box or a special tank to have a nice vape.
I strongly believe a mod that can provide 30W is quite sufficient, in most cases.

A good set up for a chain vaper will be different than the major majority are looking for, imho. This requires tanks that can wick very very quickly.

I when I vape, I chain vape for about two minutes at a time.
My setups all provide a different vaping experience, but are also to my liking and work for me. I have come to terms with how they operate (coil and wicking performance) and respect that asking for more will provide poor results.

Below are my off the shelf setup/combinations I use along with the settings I use.
* Kangertech Aerotank V2, MVP2.0. Airflow wide open, 1.2Ohm coil, 9 Watts.
* Kangertech Aerotank V2, Itaste134, Airflow wide open, 1.2Ohm coil, 10 Watts.
* Aspire Mini-Nautilus, MVP2.0. Airflow wide open, 1.8Ohm coil, 10 Watts.
* Aspire Mini-Nautilus, Itaste134, Airflow wide open, 1.2Ohm coil, 12 Watts.

* With the above noted four setups I often find I have to wait for the wick to catch up, preventing me from a true chain vape experience. I really like these setups when I'm around the house... a vape here, a vape there, here-a-vape, there-a-vape... lol. I find no advantage to vaping these tanks above 12Watts since I will get dry hits more often than I like. These setups also have a very tough time with high VG juice.
My go-to set ups when out and about are below. They are customized for me and my vaping style.
** Kangertech Subtank (RBA mode) drilled and slotted, Eleaf 30W Istick, Airflow wide open, custom 30awg three wire twisted 0.8Ohm coil, 18.6Watts.

** Kangertech Subtank-Mini (RBA mode) drilled and slotted, Eleaf 30W Istick, Airflow wide open, custom 30awg three wire twisted 0.6Ohm coil, 20.7Watts.
** I intentionally modified (drilled and slotted) my Subtank and my Subtank-Mini to allow for maximum juice flow to the wicks. The modified RBA mode have allowed me to use high VG juice and has allowed me to truly chain vape the way I like.

As you can see there is no real easy answer for your question and concern.
If another purchase is a definite thing I think it might be good to consider a RTA. Building your own coils and wicks in a RTA maybe the solution.

Good luck.
Happy vaping.

10 watts for a 0.5Ω coil, seriously? My device only fires for 10 seconds, I'd never get the coil hot enough to produce vapor at 10 watts... just tried, 8 second hit, next to nothing
