New member saying hello - started vaping for an unconventional reason

Hi ECF!

Decided to stop lurking about and post for once, so I thought I'd make an introduction. My name is Wes, and I've been vaping since about May. My vaping story is a bit...atypical, I guess. I didn't come to vaping for the same reasons most everyone seems to; I'm not an ex-heavy smoker (I smoked a few pipes or cigars now and then). Instead, I decided to try e-cigs because they were the cheapest and potentially safest way I could find to use nicotine as a treatment for a condition I've had since I was around 7. I know, I know, several of you are probably thinking: what?

I have had muscular tics almost daily since they first manifested when I was a kid. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about - the only difference between my situation and someone with "full-blown" Tourette's is I don't have the vocal tics that show up in their cases. Otherwise, I'm just one step down on the tic disorder spectrum. I've spent a lot of my life trying to find treatments for these, as they can sometimes be debilitating - my muscles in my neck once chorded up so bad that I was in pain for several days. It's gotten a bit better as I've gotten older, as is typical, but it never went away.

When I was in college, I tried tobacco a few times borrowing a smoke from friends, and I noticed something weird. Whenever I smoked tobacco, my tics were minimized, and sometimes went fully away. I decided to research, and found that there had been a few studies (but admittedly not a ton of them) showing that Tourettes patients showed some reduced tic activity when treated with nicotine patches. So, there was some research to back up what I was seeing. I talked to my neurologist about it, and he explained that it made sense to him based on what he knew about the way nicotine interacts with neurotransmitters in the brain (although he wasn't about to recommend I take up smoking!). But the problem was, as many of you have intimate experience, smoking with any frequency made me feel like crap. So it wasn't something I was about to do long-term, even if it provided relief from my tics.

I tried patches, and while they sort of worked, they were a pain in the .... to keep on my skin for any period of time, and they were >super< expensive for long-term use. I couldn't keep affording them. I kept a pipe and a bit of pipe tobacco around for days when my tics were especially bad, but I tried to avoid it if at all possible, because I hated waking up tasting stale smoke on my tongue from the day before.

Then e-cigs came around. I watched info about them for a long while, and decided to pull the trigger on buying one early this year, after talking it over with my wife. I bought a basic ego/clearo kit, and sure enough, it worked. My tics have been minimal ever since, except on days where I'm especially stressed.

I know I am making what many will see as an irrational decision, choosing to use an addictive substance to treat a disorder that doesn't present a threat to my life. However, I believe I am making a rational decision to treat this in the least invasive, potentially safest way possible. After all, the only other traditional treatments that I haven't already tried for these tics - antipsychotics like Haldol - have side effect profiles that make nicotine look like child's play.

So, I just wanted to say hi, and put this all out there. Are there any others in the community that have similar stories? Nice to meet you all, and hope you're having a happy new year!

-Wes

Welcome to the forum Wes. I think what you are doing is a wise choice and I would do the same if I was in your shoes.

What mg nicotine are you vaping at?

Not sure if there are others but I have read some similar things of nicotine being good for certain people right here on these fourms. Although nobody knows the long term effects of vaping, I'm quite confident giving your circumstances that vaping is a great option for you and ex smokers alike.

Thanks all for the warm welcomes! As to what nic I'm vaping at, I started at 12 mg, probably in error, since the people in the shop seemed to indicate that's where most people started. I didn't think about the fact that it was mostly smokers starting at that level. So, I spent a month or so getting a bit nauseated if I overdid it. I moved down to 6 around the time I picked up my first Kayfun-style tank. Basically, I'm trying to dial it down to the lowest nicotine level that successfully keeps my tics mellow, and 6 is working pretty well for me on atomizers with tighter airflow. I've been thinking about moving down to 3 now for use with RDAs/higher-airflow tanks, but it's a bit hard to find 3 mg in the brick and mortars, except in a few flavors I'm not keen on.

So far it's been working pretty well. My wife notices a big difference in my tic frequency (I trust her, because when they were bad, I was so used to them that I could go a whole day and not realize it was happening), so I'm pretty sure it's not just a placebo effect. Anyway, as long as it continues to help me, and we don't find out any bombshells about safety a few years down the road (I know we still don't know much about the long term safety of these things), I think it's reasonable to keep putting up with some mild addiction (which I admit, I have now after several months).

Thanks again all, and hope everyone's having a happy new year!

Welcome Wes, I have always been a believer that nicotene at some point will become medicinal. For many years the stigma attached to it kept researchers away. Recently they are testing nic with diabetes. IBS , and Alzheimers . This is the main reason I have a problem with any ban. You never know what can happen in the future. If what you are doing helps keep at it.

Party on! Whatever works for you.

We just want to know what mods you own!

Let's see...

Mods
Brass Praxis (authentic)
Stingray X (Clone - Infinite)
Cloupor "DNA 30" (clone)
Mutation X Mod (authentic - just ordered from VaporDNA - still in the mail)

Atomizers
Infinite CLT V2 (authentic)
Kayfun Lite + (clone - HCigar)
Aspire Atlantis
Aspire Nautilus (not frequently used anymore)
Project Sub-ohm Silverplay (just ordered from VaporDNA - in the mail with the Mutation X mod)

I'd say my current most common setups are Praxis+CLT or Stingray X+Atlantis (for driving - if you ever use this combo do not not not use the Atlantis with the hybrid top-cap. You'll vent a battery with a hard short for some reason - don't ask me how I found this out, but I have confirmed it from the internet after the fact :) ).

Prior to this, when I was getting started, I had an Ego Twist + a few different clearos, and an MVP V2 that decided one day that it wanted to stop working and smell like burned wires. These things happen - it gave me an excuse to pick up the DNA 30, so it wasn't all bad.

Hey Wes! I'm new here, also. I also have some strange neuro issues, and have been off and on drugs for them for years to no avail. Mine are mainly limb and sleep related. I'm also a smoker though, which is my main reason for vaping. Just wanted to say hi and to let you know that in my past weeks experience on this forum, everyone on here is ri..... helpful and friendly. I'm glad you're finding an alternate viable alternative for treatment of your symptoms, and it's nice to cyber meet you!

very nice! and you can just buy a bottle of zero and a bottle of 6 for those flavors you really like. Mix them up real good and presto you now have a 3.

Welcome!

If you are looking for a 3mg blend, get a 6mg and a 0mg of the same flavor and mix them together... Lots of folks get different levels in order to achieve a "non-standard" level.

Afterwhile, you could even consider DIY ;)

Glad to know that this is helping you with your health issues.... Let's all just pray that BT and BP and the FDA and all the other "freaks" out there don't blow it for us!

Thanks for the advice on the nic level mixing - I've thought about doing either that or DIY, but I have a toddler in the house, and I know the one time I made a mistake and had a spill, somehow he'd be the one getting hurt. So I have stuck with off-the-shelf or off-the-net juice thus far. I've just ordered my first batch from Dr. Crimmy's, and so if I like what I got I may try ordering some smaller bottles in different strengths (they offer 1.5 and 3 on top of the usual multiples of 6) to see what works best.

On the FDA/etc. issues, yeah, I'm keeping an eye out for what's coming down the road. I hate to sound paranoid, but a lot of my interest in mechs and rebuildables came out of my wish to have something that will last me for a good several years and that I can repair myself if needed, just in case the regulations knock us all back to the cigalike-only days. I guess if it does start to go that way, I may be forced to learn DIY regardless. :p
