I found this section of the forum, thanks to my new friend, Kreel. To sum it up, I purchased a 510, with 5 atomizers, 55 blank carts, and the 5 prefilled marl carts that came with it. I got it 2 days ago. Both batteries are manual. I'm having the following problems...

* No throat hit whatsoever

* No taste from any of the liquids I purchased whatsoever

* Burning plastic taste and smell from all 5 atomizers

There seems to be tons of people that swear by this product, and I seem to be in the severe minority of people that is having trouble with it. I am desparately hoping I can find a way to get this working, as I would prefer not to have to return/sell it, and I'd like to have a "safer" alternative to the KRD808-1, which is the only other unit I have, and there seems to be a recent flood of complaints due to it's actual burning of the cart material, which I fear could be a serious health risk. I PROMISE I have no alterior motive to throw dirt on the 510's name, I am merely a new user that wants to get this thing working properly. You can see the thread I started in the "General" section, which sadly took a turn for the worse, and is now locked, here. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...sion/19159-just-got-my-510-no-throat-hit.html
Any suggestions, comments etc. would be great! Thanks in advance!

First blow out an atomizer by putting the threaded side in your mouth and blow through it with a tissue in front of the other side of the atomizer. Then take a corner of the tissue and twist it up and put it inside the atomizer to dry the inner walls of the atomizer. Now inspect the atomizer and see if the bridge is centered properly. If the bridge of the atomizer is off center then use a tweezers and CAREFULLY center the bridge.

Once your atomizer is blown out and centered, drip TWO drops of liquid in the bridge of the atomizer. Do your best to hit the center of the bridge and try not to let it run down the sides of drip next to the bridge and into the pot. You REALLY want to hit the center of the bridge.

Now grab a new cart and take the filler material out. Get a paperclip and stick it in the hole of the mouthpiece then wiggle it around to get the end cap off the cart. You will see another cap inside the cart. do the same thing with the paperclip and get that out too. You should now be able to see directly through the cart on two sides.

look at the atomizer bridge and try to line the cart up in the same direction as the bridge of the atomizer while you slide the 'blank' cart in.

Now press the button on your battery JUST ONE SECOND before you put the e-cig in your mouth and start to take a drag. Do your best to take a slow controlled drag. Taking a quick hard hit like you would with an analog cigarette does not work on the e-cigs. Typically a drag off an e-cig should be around 5 seconds so count it off in your head.

If you press the button to early before your drag you will start buring liquid before you are hitting on the e-cig. If you press it to late you are going to be dragging on a very weak e-cig.

If it is not producing good vapor on those first drags then drip JUST TWO MORE drop on the atomizer.

Hopefully this will be of help to you.

I have a Dura C and I really like it. I cannot use it as my only e-cig. The atomizer gets hot too fast. I switch back and forth. Use one e-cig than another. Whien I first started vaping all my e-cigs had a burnt taste. This is because I tried to smoke it like a analog.
E-cigs are not smoked like analog. There is a learning curve. I also have the Vaper King cig and there is less of a learning curve with it. When I first got a screwdriver months ago it taste burnt. Every atomizer I used with it did. Now it does not taste burnt. It was me not knowing how to vape right. My suggestion is put the 510 away for a while and use the Vapor King. Later when you have vaped for a while get the 510 back out.
Or get your money back and later try a 510.

You could order another atomizer from Janty and see if it is the same way. It could be bad atomizers.

dumbwaldo - great tips on the cart/atty maintenance. I wondered how the carts were made.

ditc - get a magnifying glass and see if there is any fiber on the atty. When I tried the coffee stirrer cart trick with a q-tip, it was too tight and when i pulled the cart, 1/2 the filler was stuck on the atty. I pulled it out, and got a burnt taste. Saw some fiber down there - pulled it out -put a drop of juice on the atty and was good to go.

i need to crack out my computer repair tool box - has the perfect tweezers for the job.

if I had a wish list for the 510, the only thing i would want is the ability to unscrew the outer casing of the atty for maintenance to get down there and see what's needed. that would make it the ultimate e-cig for me.

those little plastic 3ml bottles that i keep in my junkie case are perfect for dripping. you can feel it parked over the atty and just give a squeeze.

thanks for all the wonderful suggestions and tips guys! i am going to give this one last shot today, trying all of the things you guys have suggested... if i'm still getting the same results, i have no choice but to return it,, although i really would like to have an alternative to the vapor king model, as i just bought all these liquids. to be honest guys,, that foul taste/smell of the burning plastic, has made such a bad impression on me that i'm literally afraid to keep trying to inhale/use the 510 for fear i will taste that stuff again! it literally had me nauseous all day yesterday and messed up my stomach too :( it seems as though it HAS to be something w/ the atty's. Because the batteries certainly work, I mean they're def lighting up when the button is pressed, and they're DEF heating up the atomizer. I can smell that the burning stuff is coming from the atty itself, and NOT the cart. Perhaps like you mentioned, rejoice, i will order a diff brand of atty to see if it makes a diff. hopefully it does! by the way, i have been trying to vape it the way i vape my kr808d-1, which is slow, long hits, 5 seconds and longer. has ANYONE that is reading this purchased atty's from eastmall recently? could it be that it's a bad batch? i mean 5 altogether that i got seems to almost be improbable that they all are messed up. i must be doing something wrong... if i end up having to throw in the towel with this unit because of frustration, is there another 3 piece model that is comparable to what the 510 is (throat hit being most important to me) with LESS of a learning curve? I get impatient sometimes! haha.

I have a Dura-C that was purchased from Janty. After I started using it I placed an order from eastmall for a 510 and some extra parts. Other than checking to see if they work I have not really used any of the 510 atomizers, just Janty ones.

When I saw you ask, I figured it is no problem for me to accomodate so I just broke out one of the 510 atomizers I got from Eastmall. It is not hitting as hard as my Janty atomizers but all my Janty atomizers are well broken in and this one is in its first minutes of life so I expected that. It is very close though and if I were not specifically looking for a difference I probably wouldn't even notice it.

I just wanted to post to let you know I am trying an Eastmall atomizer and will post back tonight to let you know how it is hitting once it is brooken in.

I also usually use 901 cartridge tips with my Dura-C because I like a whistle tip better but for the purposes of 'testing' I am instead using a stripped out 510 cart. The 510 carts reach further down into the atomizer than the 901 tips do so I want to see if the plastic on the cart melts at all.

I will post back later.

Primed is in reference to a liquid that the manufacturer puts on the atomizers to prevent oxidation. It is like a coating of oil. If the atomizer is completely dry and you activate it, it will taste very burnt. Once that happens it will take a good amount of time for that taste to go away.

It has only been about 2 hours of pretty constant use and the 510 atomizer has caught up to the Janty atomizers I have. I have probably dripped the atomizer 20 times or so in the last two hours. I ran through a fully charged battery and use the passthrough for a while and now I am using a Dura-C battery.

Neither battery makes it perform as well as the passthrough does so on the batteries I need to take a slightly longer drag than using the passthrough. regardless of what I am connected to I am getting at least 8 to 10 good throat hit drags off each two drop dripping.

Here are some tips...

Exhale through your nose just before taking a drag.

Hold the vapor in your mouth for a second before inhaling it.

If all else fails, direct draw into your lungs. If you do that you can drag on it for as long as you like and this method will give less visible vapor but more throat hit.

BTW
all this was done using 24mg Johnson Creek Tenesee Cured

I've had my 510 for a couple of days and I'd say that it's just like the 4081 in that it needs a little use to really hit its prime. In other words, it needs to break in some before it performs to peak. Mine was a little inconsistent yesterday, but now that I've got my draw adjusted to it and I've run through a couple of battery cycles it seems to perform much better.

I got four new attys today in a dual kit. I am breaking in the second one now and it is just like yours, but so was the first. Barely any hit or smoke but after a while the first one started catching up to my Janty's. I can hear it burning inside but there is very little smoke coming out. I suppose it is the primer burning out of the wicking. Do not try to remove fibers from the atty unless you are sure they are poly fibers(poly will only be on the top). It seems they are part of the wick itself, there is a thread here somewhere about this. I went through one battery and puffed for a while on the passthrough before it started losing that popcorn oil taste and began producing a lot of smoke.

Welcome to the club, ditc. :)

Every new atomizer I get from wherever always gets two drops of my favorite liquid before the initial break in. Let it soak upright battery side down for 30 seconds or so. Draw slow and shallow at first. Whatever that primer fluid is (if any) won't taste as bad, and at least you know for certain you aren't going to burn up an atty on the first go. (This, btw, goes for any model atty I get from wherever, not just the 510).

Once your 510 starts rocking your socks off, you'll know it.

Thanks for all the support guys. A brief update: I gave some more tender loving care to the initial atty that I've been working on. I've found a few things while being a little bit more patient with it. Please let me know if any or all of these things are normal or abnormal.

* Today I dripped 2 drops directly on the atty coil. I dripped about 3 or 4 drops of juice into an already moist cart. I was using 36mg menthol liquid from Eastmall. I finally was able to get a decent throat hit, and was without question, tasting the menthol. So that, in itself, was a minor victory for me. One thing I did notice though, and please let me know if this sounds strange. The other nite, when I couldn't get the thing to work at all, I was actually getting MUCH MORE vapor out of the atty, but ZERO throat hit. Now, I seem to get a throat hit, but less vapor. Don't get me wrong, that's PERFECTLY fine with me, I don't care nearly as much about the amount of vapor as I do about the throat hit. Just wanted to know if anyone would know why this could be?

* A point of concern: The burning plastic taste that I was extremely fearful of, as it really made a bad impression on me, DID disappear after I took the steps that I mentioned above. BUT, sure enough, after 10 or so hits, that nasty taste appeared again. Here's the weird thing though, by adjusting a couple of variables, I was able to make that taste go away again, at least for a brief period of time. Those variables were: taking the cart out of the atty, and then simply twisting it and putting it back into the atty WITHOUT dripping any additional juice. The other variable was the angle to which I was holding the 510. I noticed that if I slanted the 510 down about 45 degrees, LED tip pointed down, I was able to get rid of the plastic taste. Also, it seems that on longer draws, with the button pressed upwards of 5 seconds, I would ALWAYS get the burnt taste, but on a shorter draw, not so much burnt taste. I am trying to fully understand how, with just those variables, the burnt taste could disappear and then reappear again, without any additional adding of liquid to the cart or atty coil. Anyone that may know, please explain!

* Battery life: This evening, I took a fully charged 510 manual battery, and vaped with it, while doing the experiments mentioned above. I'd say after about 40 draws or so, the battery's LED flashed a number of times, and then went dead. This happened over a period of I'd say 35 or 40 mins. As well, at that point, I put that dead battery back into the charger, and within another 45 mins, the charger light went from Red to Green. Is it normal that a battery would both discharge so quickly, but also recharge so quickly?

* Lastly, cartridge life. Should it be, that after starting a process of dripping 2-3 drops into an already moist cart, that I should only be getting 10 or so hits before I get the plastic taste? It's important to note that the ONLY indication I've gotten from this thing that it needs more liquid is from that foul burnt taste, and NEVER from a loss of vapor. Is there STILL something I'm doing wrong? I've found the throat hit now, so that makes me happy, but now I need to know about cart life with 2-3 drops, and also, somehow chasing away that horrible burnt taste. Please let me know! ;) thanks again to everyone that has taken the time to chime in!

The burnt taste will completely go away soon. When you tip the unit, it is allowing more 'loose juice' to wick into the atty. Some factory stuffed carts are a bit overfilled with stuffing at times. You will learn to stuff your own carts in time, or you can poke it with a pin at different angles to loosen the fibers a bit. Turning the cart is a good idea as long as you don't twist it while it's on the atty. Also, with your previous experimentations, you might want to make sure your cart still appears fresh, and for an even bigger kick read this thread:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/joye-510/15093-incredible-510-cart-upgrade.html

I think you'll like this once your atty breaks in. Try it, and you won't be disappointed if you get it right.

Thanks Kreel. Funny enough, that was actually one of the first things I did when I wasn't getting proper results that I wanted the other day! When I went to my office, where I had the package shipped, I grabbed the package, and then a few handfuls of coffee stirrers from our office's kitchen! That mod didn't seem to do too much for me, but again, this was 2 nites ago when I initially was having ZERO luck with this product. Not to overly exhaust this question over and over again, but that burnt taste that will apparently go away soon, is completely related to the atty ITSELF and NOT the cart? I am also then under the assumption then, that if this IS the case, that getting that burning taste every once in awhile now, is NOT a clear indicator that the cart is dry? But that the atty is still kind of just wearing itself in? And if that is the case, that means that every time I use a new atty, I will have to deal w/ that burnt taste for awhile? Just checking, and Kreel, thanks for the zippy response! I guess there is someone else out there I can depend on that keeps crazy hours like me ;)

Some attys have funky tasting primer. I honestly think you probably burned it in experimenting the first day. This means yours will likely take a little longer to vape off. In a previous post you mentioned holding the button on for 10-12 seconds. That is a no-no. However, if the burnt taste doesn't go away fairly soon, just chalk it up to experience and try another atty. It is also possible that the factory cart isn't absorbing as much liquid as it should or wasn't completely full. I rarely use factory carts anymore because generally they suck. I take out the filler, and rebuild them and use my own fave juice. If you haven't tried rebuilding a cart, teraphon has a great vid in another thread that shows you how to do it. All these skills you will learn will help you a bunch. Soon you will be an expert.

It is also possible that the atty is in fact burning the cart, it might not be noticeable at first but after several days you will notice that the edges are distorted. I have found that I must align mine up to the atty which is off center or it will burn the cart. I do this mostly at night while driving when I cannot see for proper alignment.

Also I hotbox my atty like I would the old swisher sweets holding the button for a straight 12-15 seconds while I take several drags at a time. This can also dry the cart very quickly and I have gotten better about pushing a second before puffing and letting go a second before my drag is finished for a cool down. This has cut down a lot on the burnt taste for me. Also holding the button so long may be burning the cart because of drying the filler so quickly. I can still only get 3-6 drops on a cart after the burning taste starts, funny but the new 510's and cart are not doing this like the Janty's are.

Going through my older carts I am noticing that every one has become saddle shaped and the edges are wrinkly and distorted along the flat sides. I must have burned every single one before I moved the atty bridges more to the center. Looks like i need to throw out all of the old carts.
