I've had some issues with nasty tasting vapor too. It seems to be caused by heating the atomizer to too high a temperature. I seem to get far more consistent results by drawing S L O W L Y rather than trying to drag like an analogue. On an auto battery I draw just enough to activate the bat and on an manual I draw as slowly as I can, but stop before I hit 5 - 6 seconds. It seems to make a big difference for me, but my story may be purely anecdotal.

Whats Burning?..... Should a completely dry atomizer produce smoke? mine does.

I have had my 510 for about four days now and experienced similar foul taste. Tried many suggestions on the forum. Blow out atomizer, Tea Bags in cartridge, lots of juice, Boil atomizer.

I must say that boiling the atomizer DID help reduce the foul burnt taste.

Then I got thinking. what is this that I am tasting. so... I complete dried out the atomizer. I mean completely! Now here is my question. If Atomizer is completely dry and I press the activation switch WITHOUT a cartridge in the atomizer should it produce smoke? Well mine does and that smoke is the exact foul taste I am getting when using 510 normally. I tried this exact same procedure with my RN-4081.. Little harder due to the automatic battery :) ... NO smoke was produced.

Another 510 question from a new purchaser. Started yesterday and love it. Can't believe my lack of need for an analog for the most part.

Today's issue is the BATTERY. I'm on my fourth recharge today for the two batteries. The charge is only holding for about 2 hours -- sometimes less. I'm not vaping constantly by any means, so why is the battery not holding a charge?

Also -- the charger seems to go green awfully fast -- sometimes under an hour. Can anybody advise if this is normal time for charging and usage or is something wrong with the batteries or charger.

Thank you again so very much for the help in advance.

Although battery life always varies as to how much one vapes, the 510s are notorious for having a short battery life. Thus the 2 hour battery life you are experiencing isn't necessarily abnormal.

The good thing about the 510 batteries is that they do charge faster than other models. So here again, I think what you are experiencing is normal...

I have decided sacrifice my Atty, in the name of research.
Hypothesis: An unknown substance or the heating element in the Atomizer is producing smoke. The smoke will go away if allowed to burn long enough.

Method:
Step 1 - Atomizer was placed in boiling water for 15 Minutes, then allowed to reach room temperature while still in pot of water. Once room temperature atomizer was removed
Step 2 - Atomizer was was blown dry using various methods. Blown out with mouth for one minute. Dried with Hair Dryer for five minutes. Then left over night to further air dry. (approximately 10 hours)
Step 3 - Atomizer was put on manual battery and NO cartridge was attached. No liquid was put on atomizer
Step 4 - Atomizer was activated for a period of 3 seconds in intervals of five minutes.

Observations: Immediately after pressing button atomizer make a sizzling noise and produces a thick heavy white smoke. A scent of ash, similar to soot from a fire was detected. After one and a half battery charges, smoke production has decreased and element is glowing red hot.

Conclusions: None so far. Will continue activating until either Atomizer dies or smoke stops.

6 hours later........

Conclusion: Atomizer died after 3.5 Batteries. It put up a good fight. Smoke did not completely go away well for any period that would not kill the atomizer, therefore it was the taste/smell of the atomizer element itself which was producing the bad taste.

Will order atomizers from a few different supplier to see if I experience the same.

Hello, and welcome to the forum!

Okay. You are new to the 510, and maybe vaping altogether.

From the top. You open the box. You charge your batts like the manual instructs. So far so good.

You take out a cartridge. Now stop. Don't put it on yet. Drop two drops of your favorite liquid on the bridge of the atty. Now push the cart on all the way. Don't twist it, just push it on. Hold the device verticle for 30 seconds battery side down. Now push the button just prior to drawing. Like sipping water through a straw. Nice and easy for several seconds. Let go of the button right as you quit drawing.

Repeat.

Now vape. When you start to notice a slightly dry taste, or metallic, or even when the juice starts losing flavor - take off the cart and top it up with your favorite juice. Two or three drops is usually all that will fit without the straw mod. These drops will give you apx. 30 good drags again. The atty needs to break in for a day or two before it begins producing clouds of vapor. Don't worry.

Don't boil your attys. Don't fry your atty with the manual batt. Your atty is fine. The taste will go away as it breaks in. Some factory filled carts aren't completely full, some are kinda dry, some are just fine. It's cart roulette.

As you gain more experience with the device you will fine tune your senses of what is right and wrong accordingly until you become an expert. Don't worry, one day you will wake up and think, "I am the 510 God!". Just give it a little time. :)

I posted a loooong answer to that question earlier in this very thread:

Do as KreeL instructed, keep the atomizer moist, and as he says the taste will go away eventually. I've sometimes managed to speed this process a little by adding a couple of drops to an atomizer and leaving it sit mesh side up overnight, or repeating for a couple of days.

With new atomizers, if you top off or refill your cartridge before it gets too dry, you may never get the foul burning taste.

IguanaNed,

I don't think it's the element itself that's producing the bad taste, it's the wick material inside the mesh bridge - again, if the atomizer gets too dry, this material starts to burn. This was confirmed by another forum member by removing some of the material and burning it outside of the atomizer and observing the same smell.

Hey RsL -- Thank you so very much for your rapid response time. :) I sincerely appreciate it and this is good to know that my experience is normal. I'm thinking my game plan should be to buy another kit, so that I have plenty for when I leave the house, unless you have another recommendation. So far, my experiences have all been thumb's up with this 510 and my new life "vaping!" :D I need to find a case for my parts too as the assembled unit is larger than my empty cigarette box and I think this puppy needs some protection when leaving the house.

I have had this thing for a couple of weeks now and i certainly am STILL getting the same foul taste from the atomizer, exactly as IguanaNed has explained. I'd think that a period of 2 weeks would be more than enough time to "break in" an atomizer. Same experience with the others that I've ordered as well.. For those saying that the burning taste will go away, or may never even start, if treated properly,,, how do you know you're not using a diff brand of atomizer manufactured by someone else? Please don't be SO sure that we're the ones doing something wrong because there's a burnt taste. Just because I and some others are new to vaping, doesn't make us SLOW (KreeL). I've spoken to some people directly, very high up on the food chain, that are 1 step from the manufacturer, that have dually noted EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM that i am having with these atomizers.,,,, just saying

510 carts from the factory seem to come a little bit overstuffed. Couple 4 drags and they dry out but only have room for a drop or two when you top off. You can try the straw mod, in which case you have to remove some of the stuffing anyway, or just trim off about a 1/3 of the stuffing.

Also - burnt plastic dry cart flavor WILL stay in the cart if you keep puffing on it for too long and foul the juice. Try trimming a fresh cart.

Something to bake your noodle, I wonder if our tastebuds get use to the 510 funk like we get burned out on a certain flavor after vaping if for a few days.

I have noticed this to be a problem I have too. I try to change flavors during the day because I completely lose the flavor after some time has passed. The only way to get the flavor out of an atty is to do a very good cleaning cycle. I think I am going to get some of the flavoring juice to bump up the taste in my juices.

My problem is that I have just been off the analogs for one month. My taste buds are still not back to normal yet.

Hi,

I've been reading these forums a lot and I just took the plunge and bought a Joye 510 from the only reputable (that I could find any way) vendor that had it in stock.

I bought the Joye 510 from E-Smokeytreats.com and I just tried it for the first time.

What I ordered... Joye 510 starter kit and 1 package of tobacco flavor med nicotine cartridges.

No throat hit, no vapor. The cartridges look like they have some sort of fiberglass and vasolene in them. Should I have ordered the liquid? I've no idea what I'm doing and I'm desperate for help.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Angela,

I've been vaping for about four months. It sounds like this is your first vaping experience... I am pretty sure that many other experienced vapors will agree, but if you are new to vaping, you should not expect vaping to be equal to analog smoking... There are lot of reading materials in the newbies sections. Do some reading, get some liquids and give it some time. I am sure you will learn to enjoy as many others in this forum. Good luck.

My experience with the 510 attys: They all start out tasting incredibly horrible! But vape great. Then the vape wanes a bit and the bad test slowly (very slowly) gets a little better. Then it seems to get broken in and vapes fantastic. The horrible taste still takes a while (a few DAYS in my experiences) to go away. Then it vapes great with great flavor! This has happened with all 510 attys no matter where I got them from. I tried washing them out with hot water, boiling, alcohol etc but nothing helped. If the first 901(4075?) I got tasted this bad I never would have stuck with the e-cigs. Actually the latest 901 atty I am now breaking in has this same terrible taste but a new 801 I just got today has the taste that my first 901 had, which isn't anywhere near as bad!
I'm curious if others had this same revulsion to the primer?
