First off...Hello DIY'ers! I think that after 3+ yrs of vaping...I'm finally ready to dabble in making my own juice (crossing my fingers that I don't poison myself) JK. With that aside, I would like to know:

1. Tools needed (beakers, bunson burners, tesla coil...etc)
2. Who makes the best flavorings and where can I pick them up for a decent price
3. What % of nic should I pic up? I currently use 24mg 50/50 PG/VG,would 100mg be fine cut into .25?
4. I know that there are a couple of recipe calculators out there, is there one that is web based and constantly updated with new recipes?

Ok, that should be it for now for me to get started...thank you guys/gals in advance for the help, wish me luck!

I highly recomend a your main sorce of flavors as Capellas. These are strong, have no odd taste, tast exactly as described, and are the main flavoring in most vendors juices. as you get better, you will want to mix diferent brands, but most everyone on ECF agrees that there is NO bad Capellas flavor. The vanilla custard is exteemly good, can be vaped as a stand alone flavor, and always gets rave reviews.

As I am finally down to 0% nic:toast: I will leave the math up to people that are more up to speed. Been to long for me to comfortably give out this info. If you don't get many replies look for a member str8vapor, or also hairball can help you here.

Good luck and be prepaired to save money.:)

Yes, Capella's would be the best for a new diy'er using single flavor mixes. Others like TPA/TFA, Lorann, Flavor West, FlavourArt, etc. also have some great flavors, just depends on what you are looking for. For a new mixer I would suggest starting with 48mg to 60mg nic base until you get comfortable with your procedures. 100mg nic is not something you take lightly, a mistake with this stuff can have serious consequences. Beakers are good along with syringes, funnels, cylinders and pipettes. The "E Juice Me Up" is a great calculator with a few recipes and will also let you add your own. There is also an app called "E Juice" that is good for your phone. Recipes can also be found in this forum along with answers to most questions. If you can't find what you are looking for just ask, lots of good people here to help out. Good luck, be safe and have a great time.

I definitely agree that you should start with Capella (sale buy 5 for $19.95 right now). It's the easiest and best flavoring out there IMO. I've been doing DIY for almost 2 years and I still use 48mg nicotine...for a few reasons. I can easily make 24mg and 12mg and it requires less PG and VG than 100mg. Plus it's much safer to work with. If I want to make a batch of 12mL it's easy to fill the bottle 1/4 full, 24mg would be 1/2 full. With 20% flavorings (including EM and sweetener) and 24mg of nic in PG that leaves me 30% for VG. It's just a lot easier for me to do it that way. I measure my flavorings in a 10mL cylinder and for small batches I use a 1mL syringe. If you need info on where to buy anything just let us know.

One thing you'll need is EM, ethyl maltol.. same thing as Cotton Candy but in crystal form that you add PG to. It's cheaper to make your own and super easy to do. It's one of the ingredients that gives juice it's density and adds a bit of sweetness. Sucralose and stevia are other sweeteners used in conjunction with EM if you want a really sweet mix.

Welcome to DIY, you're going to LOVE it!!! We'll be here to help you anytime you need it.

A good calculator is essential for DIY and makes making your own juice a breeze.

eJuice Me Up - e-Juice e-Liquid Recipe Calculator

It comes loaded with quite a few recipes. I don't think there is a database that updates the recipes, but this forum is full of them.

In many instances, it's not necessary to combine over 3 or 4 flavors. A lot of the time you can find a base flavor you're looking for, and tweak it a little with some supporting flavors. You'll save money hand-over-fist and the juice is comparable to ejuice vendors if you order from the right places.

+1 for Capella - get in on that 6 flavor sale and save some $$

Good luck.

I agree with previous posts about Capella's, their flavors are easy to work with and have a high success rate.

I don't recommend working with 100mg nicotine. 60 or 48 is safer and easier to handle, and just about as economical if you buy from the right vendors.

Don't worry about beakers or graduated cylinders. Just get some pediatric oral dosing syringes to measure out your base liquids and some 1 mL insulin syringes for measuring flavors. Many people save their empty juice bottles and wash them out for re-use with DIY juices.

Best selection of flavorings ecigexpress.com or onestopdiy. Best flavorings each has at least a few good ones to offer. Tell us what flavors you might like. Best deal on Capella's is at their website. I get my PG at the tractor store for twenty bucks a gallon. Agree on the EM is a must have at least for me. I get mine allready melted and mixed from ecigexpress because I'm lazy like that. Cotton candy flavoring is the same thing as EM by the way or very similar. If you like super sweet you might want sucralose drops.

First off...Hello DIY'ers! I think that after 3+ yrs of vaping...I'm finally ready to dabble in making my own juice (crossing my fingers that I don't poison myself) JK. With that aside, I would like to know:

Hello - I'm a new vaper, and dived directly into DIY because I need to order everything abroad.
But I have learned a lot, both the hard way, and from reading this forum (I am slowly reading back the last 100 pages - it's worth it). Since I like writing loooong posts, I'll try to tackle your questions one by one:

1. Tools needed (beakers, bunson burners, tesla coil...etc)

This can be divided into two parts: measuring equipment and empty bottles.
More is better. Especially empty bottles. I ordered far too few initially, and it was very frustrating.

Especially in the beginning I would recommend having a ridiculous amount of empty 5ml-10ml bottles on hand. Like at least 25. This is because you may want to make different strengths of the same flavour, and let them steep, to be able to compare and find what you like. You may also find that you want to experiment with fixing flavour separately and then combining them, or pre-mix very strong flavours.

Measuring equipment: an assortment of syringes in sizes 1ml to 10ml (or even 20 ml). I am happy now that I have three 1ml syringes in use (one for nic, one for menthol and mint, one for tobacco-ish juices), and 3 more unused waiting for their turn, and one each of 2ml, 5ml, 10ml and 20ml. Needles for the syringes might be a question of taste/preferences. I like having an assortment of those on hand too, very handy for drawing up things from narrow-necked bottles. I have an assortment ranging from 14G (good for thick VG) to 27G (very thin, rarely use that), and have found the 18G and 22G the most useful.

A measuring cylinder might also be a good tool - but I am rather frustrated with my 10ml one, it is too narrow to be practical (hard to stir, impossible to draw up everything without a looong needle), and I find that I would get more use out of a 20ml or 30ml cylinder.

Small funnels would be a good idea. Being a bit clumsy this is something I really need to get - the one I happened to have is just a little bit too wide to fit into most of my bottles.

Disposable plastic pipettes are useful, but more for transferring things from one vessel to another, not for measuring.

What else? Spare atties or cartos for testing! Very important.

2. Who makes the best flavorings and where can I pick them up for a decent price

Can't answer this (wrong continent), but you need to tell us what kind of flavours you are looking for. Fruit-dessert-drink-tobacco?

It seems to me that different flavour companies have different strengths.
I am totally focused on tobacco, and have so far used FlavourArt and Hangsen. The latter is *very* easy, as the flavouring is essentially a concentrate of the flavour used in Hangsen liquids.
Unfortunately Hangsen flavour concentrates might be hard to find, especially if you want to try the whole range.

3. What % of nic should I pic up? I currently use 24mg 50/50 PG/VG,would 100mg be fine cut into .25?

I guess so. I vape 10-14mg/ml, and have found 36mg/ml to be quite handy. With 24mg you will probably want at least 50-60mg/ml, so why not 100mg/ml? But you need to remember to get safety stuff too if you are going to be handling that 100mg/ml (gloves, goggles/faceshield etc).

4. I know that there are a couple of recipe calculators out there, is there one that is web based and constantly updated with new recipes?

I would be careful about using recipes straight off until you know a bit more about what you like. Recipes are unfortunately often given in drops, which makes them very inexact.

I have an android phone, and I use this app all the time. For looking up more complex things I use scubadatdan's spreadsheet-based calculator (has its own sticky here), I believe that one also has a few recipes.

Capellas is good too . You should try them . Oh wait everyone else beat me to it . Nice to see Capellas finally sinking in . You wont fins any higher quality flavorings . Also pick up some ethyl maltol sweetener aka cotton candy flavoring .

Next most important thing is nic . Stick with RTS nic .Highdesertecigs is the best price for rts nic .

Next download ejuicemeup from breaktru

next get some pg while your getting the nic

Next buy some vg at walmart or CVS . Labeled Glycerine USP .

Next get some syringes at drfoster .Super cheap and free shipping

Next get some bottles on ebay .search for 20ml dropper bottles .They have blue caps and are the cheapest you will find

Next go start DIYing

Since the previous posters have covered a fairly good range of thoughts, I'll give you mine now... Well soon...

Mind-Set = There is no failure. There are mistakes that teach you more than all the posts on this sub ever will. You are making your juice to match your taste, whims, equipment, and/or desires. You will learn quite a bit about your tastes as you learn from your mistakes. A mistake is finding a way to NOT do what you wanted to do and puts you one step closer to perfection.

Flavoring = Either find some recipes in the recipe sub that strike your fancy and start with those, or go to Capella's and grab individual flavorings that strike your fancy, or, possibly, both. Capellas is VERY forgiving so it is really hard to make unvapable juice with them. (This is constantly being rediscovered so watching Capells "catch on" after each rediscovery is amusing.) Other flavorings can have narrow working ranges and drive some folks crazy. I consider any flavoring that has less than a 5% range between "close" to "too much" to be very unforgiving. (Flavoring levels in quotes are from my guide on the subject.)

Size = Start small, work small, make small mistakes then work up from there. Unless you absolutely need to make big mistakes to satisfy some mental quirk, make them small so the mistakes do not drain your wallet. (I approach target shooting the same way when I coach it. I'll put a tiny lady bug sticker on a sheet of paper and run it out 20 feet and tell the student to hit the antenna with the iron sighted rifle I then hand them. The mistakes they make will be smaller than if they were shooting at a bullseye and are easier to correct.)

Take Notes = You will not remember what you did from session to session no matter how good you think your remembering is. Without notes a mistake is just a mistake and not a step to perfection. Worse, without notes you will make something great and never get close to it again.

Ok, I'm slowly processing through all of your suggestions and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions. I'm sorry for the late reply...for one reason or another, I didn't get any notifications like I usually do. I guess the first thing I need to pick up is some unflavored nic and some PG/VG. I already have a buttload of syringes and pipettes from CCV, as well as a bunch of empty bottles that I've been hoarding through the years...so I got most of the supplies covered. I'll check out the spreadsheets/tools that you guys have suggested. I appreciate all of the help...Isn't ECF the best!

Thank you
Sean McL
