I'm jealous.. I need a drill press :(
You don't need fancy tools or even fancy wood to make a nice looking enclosure.

I think Para's cedar mod looks quite elegant.

I had a little time to work on the mod today...

Now I just need all the rest of the hardware before cutting out the display and drilling holes for the buttons & 510 connector. For some reason it looks taller in the photos--it feels much smaller.

Thanks for the rubber and cork stopper ideas. I ended up just using wood since that's what I had on hand. It looks crooked in the picture but it's just the camera perspective. Making your own case is a little more work than I thought!

This may not offer quite as much shock protection as the display bracket being discussed here, but I am planning to mount my display using clear mounting tape sandwiched between a polycarbonate window and the OLED screen. The window (1/8" thick, matching the thickness of the wood case wall) will be cut and sanded to size so that it is a press-fit in the opening. The window/display assembly is then (gently) pressed into the opening from the inside of the case.

By placing the tape on the display first and then the window onto the tape, I think I should be able to align the window accurately over the display. The tape will be slightly larger than the opening, temporarily holding the assembly in place on the inside of the case until a foam backer fills the remaining space in the case and holds everything in place.

I'm waiting on my DNA board to arrive but I stuck a piece of tape on my stove clock to test the idea. Very little (if any) optical distortion, and until the tape is really pressed, it is easily removed and repositioned. The tape is ~1mm thick and is somewhat pliable/rubbery (even after sitting in a toolbox for 5+ years) so perhaps it will isolate the OLED a bit from impact.

...and thanks for the encouragement, santo!

are you planing on folding the screen back on to the board?

Yes.

I just received my DNA20D today (woohoo!) and oh my gosh, is this thing tiny! Definitely going to have to practice some soldering lest I butcher this thing.

Here is the position the screen will be in.

I plan to fold it like this, leaving room for the charger near the bottom. Because I'm going with an 18650 in the right half, there will be some empty space on the left half between the DNA20D and the charger. I flirted with the idea of using an 18490 (reducing the overall height from 3-1/2" to 3" and putting its size closer to a true stealth mod) but this length allows me to get all four fingers around it--more comfy. Everything's a trade off. :)

Did you have something in mind about the folding, d9mel?

But i think its a tad too big, and i havent figured out the caps yet

Outstanding!!!! I love it. That looks like cherry also...?

As far as caps go, I found that the aluminum caps I made took about an hour each (yech). I don't have a bandsaw to rough them out, so I scribed the shape and then used a bench grinder to get the curves. After that, LOTS of filing to sneak up on a match to the profile of the wood tube. A wood cap would be so much quicker.

Holy cow, asdaq! I count 36 of those babies! I see you've made some with different sized holes. I've been drawing those, too, thinking of a 26650. What are the various heights you're working with?

You could probably sand the exterior down some, 1/8" is still generous IMO.

I agree. 1/8" is plenty strong, more so than I expected.

At my snail's pace, you guys are going to finish yours before I do!

Not me. The burl piece I was doing blew out on the lathe the other day. I'm going in a whole other direction now.
I was going to start on it today and the OCD in me decided that it would be good to rearrange all the tools on the pegboard in my shop.
