I bought a phoenix v4, 2mm wick and 32 awg wire and I can't get a decent vape to save my life. The problem I'm having is I can't even get a hit until I crank the power up on the provari, and I start tasting burnt before I could ever get the hit I'm looking for. I used the wick and coil it came with, wasn't happy with it so I made some myself. It helped a little bit but I had the same problem, I can't get a vape anywhere near as big as a protank or carto tank. There's so many attys and so many methods I don't know where to start. What I'm looking for in an atty is something where each time I hit it I'm looking to break my old record for biggest cloud (of course not one right after another), and not have to refill it every 2 minutes. I don't care how much I have to pay, just looking for that amazing vape a protank or carto tank wouldn't be able to handle.

I would suggest getting the Igo-W.It is a stellar vape at $19,not too bad.I would also suggest getting 3mm silica which will hold more juice as you said, you do not want to fill very often.

What res. is the coils you have been making so i can get an idea what to work with to help get you a better vape.

I would suggest dropping the res. of the coil alot say,1.5-2~ range i was going to suggest 30 gauge kanthal but,32 works.I am not real big on HR atties i tend to keep my RBA's in the .5-.8~ range. You might want to look at a few youtube vids on making micro coils you can go down on the res. of the coil but still get that hot vape.

Perhaps this is a good place to ask, since y'all are on a similar subject. I've been rebuilding Evod coils for a couple of weeks. I'm using 2.5mm silica and 34awg Kanthal. I bought the supplies at a local B&M and the guy talked me into the 34 gage wire. I'm running fixed power ego 1100mAh batteries and won't be able to upgrade any time soon. My coils are coming in consistently around 2.2 to 2.5 ohms. They're functioning about like they did new out of the pkg but I'd like to get more vapor. Can I get anywhere with micro coils from this 34 gage wire?

I'm already twisting the legs before assembly to and I'm using 4/3 to 5/4 coils. I'm sure I could get better performance out of 28 or 30 gage Kanthal and a micro of around 8 wraps but I'd like to make use of the wire I have left. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Harley, I've had success with 30awg Kanthal, 9 to 10 wraps at about 1.5mm diameter on Evod carts. Here's a few tips:

1) The lower the gauge, the higher the resistance.

2) 1.5mm wick with a flavor wick on top has worked fine for a moderate vaper on the EVOD. (Will be trying thicker wick next week to see results from my guinea pig, since I don't vape but have been rebuilding the wife's paraphernalia)

3) The lower the resistance the faster it will heat up due to current flow, it is what gives you a better throat hit and what you really want

4) Micro coils is where its at... lol at least that's what I hear, they're not difficult to make, and they seem to work wonders on heat production and vapor.

@Malaveiko
1) The lower the gauge, the higher the resistance.

Sorry, I'm not trying to call you out, but that is incorrect.

Lower wire gauge = lower resistance
30ga has lower resistance than 32ga at the same length
28ga has lower resistance than 30ga at the same length

Thinner wire gives you higher resistance than thicker wire of the same length.

3) The lower the resistance the faster it will heat up due to current flow, it is what gives you a better throat hit and what you really want

Not necessarily. And it's not quite that simple. Lower resistance will certainly deliver more wattage but that's not really as important as the coil setup you're using to deliver that wattage. I can't really speak about it from a technical standpoint, but vapor production and throat hit are going to be influenced more by wire temperature (choice of wire gauge and number of wraps) than just resistance. There's a thread on wire temperature on ECF--I highly recommend reading it, it's eye-opening.

Here's a link to the wire temperature thread I'm referring to:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/346216-watts-do-not-matter-its-all-about-wire-temp-read.html

And here's a link to the micro coil thread:
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/rebuildable-atomizer-systems/416271-micro-coils-increase-vapor-flavor-th.html

Malavekio, I certainly didn't intend to call you out (and I certainly hope you don't take offense), but I think it's important to supply the correct information to people who come to this forum seeking help.

@Mikey37
I'm willing to bet that you've choked the wick. In my experience, a burning taste with low/no vapor production is indicative of the wick not being able to supply enough liquid to the coil. The key is wrapping the coil in such a way that it's making contact with the wick all the way around while not squeezing it to the point where juice can't flow. Try wrapping the coil with a straightened out paperclip held up against the wick. When you take the paperclip out, the wick will fill in the extra space. Try a 4/5 wrap or a 5/6 wrap--it should get you in the 1.5-2 ohm range (I think).

Good luck!

An idea I got from a Vapelyfe vid on youtube for wrapping your coil is to wrap your wich in rolling paper, a 1.25 width, and just burn it off with the coil when you test fire it. They did this with SS mesh, which is all I use though I use a silica core to help wicking, but silica doesn't just burn up so if you're careful it should work for yours as well. I could be wrong, and someone please correct me if I am, but I think the only problem may be that the silica could hold on to some of that burned paper flavor.

Check out the link to the micro coil thread above. I'm sure you can do it with the 34ga, but I have no idea what resistance you'd be getting. I've personally never worked with anything thinner than 30ga. One option may be to try and wrap the coils as you've been wrapping them, but with the coils touching (i.e. no gap between wraps). It wouldn't be a true micro coil, but it follows the same idea and should increase vapor production.

I have no idea how a 8 wrap micro coil would work in an Evod (I've only rebuilt a couple of heads)--I know that the space for the coil is pretty darn tiny, and that you need to fill in the slots for the wicks to keep the atty from gurgling. If the 34 winds up not working out, maybe try a couple small lengths of 32 and 30 from your local B&M. Lowering the resistance a little will help with vapor production.

I want to try rebuilding, never done it before and I usually use clearos on the go and drip at home but I'm finding I need better flavor and a bigger vape. Should I try rebuilding something I have or buy a RBA? I want to try a RBA but I have no idea how to use them or how to rebuild... I know there are videos, so I'll probably check those out. But if I were to get a RBA, would be a semi low cost and unfinicky/easy to use and rebuild atty? I want it to be as simple as possible since I'm a noob and will probably mess it up.

What battery/mod are you using right now?? What resistance are the off-the-shelf atties you're using? What's your budget? More info is mo' betta ;)

I have a couple of devices but I mostly use my eGo style batteries, iTaste VV 3, a Spinner, and a Twist. I also have an iTaste MVP, Versa VV, and a Vmod mini, but I don't really use them. I like my smaller Ego styles because they're light and small and I don't like using big mods in public. I've tried a lot of different atomizers, Vapage and Cisco and whatnot... I typically get standard resistant stuff, I guess around 2.0 to 2.5 ohms?

I'm willing to spend up to about $40-50 with the RBA unit and the extra stuff together. I know the wick and wire isn't that expensive and lasts a long time? But yea... I need something simple, beginner friendly, and less finicky the better. A lot of people are saying use one of the Igo-L or W types? Or perhaps even the RSST genesis style? I definitely wouldn't mind something on the cheaper side as long as it works well, just in case I can't figure this stuff out and decide not to use it, I won't be out much money.

Absolutely correct, I'm sorry for having misled you by the way I was thinking, when I mean lower gauge, I'm talking of a thinner wire, thought it would be a higher gauge #. So yes, thank you genghishahn for clarifying that :)

As to this I must add to it for the sake of science and PRIDE (yeah my pride was hurt damn it :p)

There's a thread on wire temperature on ECF--I highly recommend reading it, it's eye-opening.

Understanding the characteristics of wire and its Thermal Conductivity drives us to understand why higher resistance wire I.E. "thinner" wire is able to transmit heat over the area of a micro coil faster. What I mean by this is that a thinner wire, with higher resistance will heat up faster, and also transfer that heat over to the next coils due to it not being able to "carry" the heat down the wire but radiates it instead to the next wire so forth so on, therefore the effectiveness is increased by just being close, and of a higher resistance, yet too high a resistance over the area of a wire will cause you to use up too much energy to heat it up therefore lessening its effectiveness overall.

In all truth genghishahn told it to ya as it should be correcting my lack of proper diction for the thoughts in my head. Oh, no hard feelings btw I appreciate you setting it straight, I must have been half asleep while posting that because after reading it I'm like omg...

P.S. Here's a good read for those that want to see an abstract as to the thermal conductivity of thinner wire which helps explain why there is a push for smaller wires, in certain applications and why they work well at times. https://courses.cit.cornell.edu/das248/index_files/thermal_conductivity_nanowires.pdf its alot of mumbo jumbo but interesting for those that love building these crazy setups and can navigate through the BS

This depends on if you want an RDA(dripping atty) or RTA(rebuildable tank atty) The Igo-W is stellar and i suggest this to anyone looking at getting into rebuildables.it is not finiky, not hard to set up in either single coil,or dual coil and if you purchase from captivape you can select the airhole sizes you prefer. The RSST on the other hand,if you want something that you can fill and go out all day without having to worry about taking the extra bottle of juice with you to drip,is a very beginner freindly device.

I have both of these and they both perform extremely well.I jumped on the Igo-W the day it came out because of the dual inline airhole design(have to warn you, some places do not sell this item with the dual airhole top cap). You can get your wick and wire off ebay cheap,100ft. of kanthal for $6-$7(free shipping too) and the wick depending on what you want silica is cheaper than ekowool. If you are in the $50(some places $65) range though the Nimbus RDA is also an extremely well performer.

Which Igo model would be the best? S, L, W? I'm kinda interested in the S since it looks smaller and seems like it looks better on an Ego style battery. I'm thinking maybe pick up one of the RDA and RBA so I can try them both out. Is there a site where I can get both of these plus all the wick, coil, and mesh/whatever I need at the same place so I don't have to pay shipping for multiple sites? Does lower gauge mean more thick and lower resistance?

Vaporbeast has no shipping all the time on anything purchased. They have the Igo-s and Igo-L,Igo-W along with the wick and wire all in one shot.

EDIT:Yes lower gauge is thicker and higher gauge is thinner.

Thanks, I'll check them out for the stuff. Ideally, with my types of batteries, what RBA type units will work on them? It says Genesis style attys work on IMR type batteries? Does that mean they will not work on eGo style batteries that don't have removable batteries? I'm still trying to understand everything.. all the different brands and types of wick/coil make it kinda confusing for me. If my batteries only go up to around 4.8-5.0, should I try to aim around a 2.0 ohm coil? In that case, what type of coil/wick should I try to get? The mesh is for Genesis style only and cotton/silica for the non-tank styles? Sorry for so many questions.

Edit: Also, i will need a multimeter? Can I just use any kind of multimeter or is there one I have to use thats specifically designed for using for this purpose (510 connection??)? Like, can I buy this fairly cheap one with good reviews?
