So, what's the story behind this forum? How come the ladies needed a place to escape to? Inquiring minds want to know! LOL

'Cause we're all so sexy and charming with our PVs and all we have to beat the men off with a stick in the other groups!

<---- so says the girl with a dude as her avatar!

 Now YOU get the swirly rain thing! Sudoku - I brought my ice scraper with me when I moved down south too. I'm probably the only on in Houston that has one. Oh well. At least I'm not using my debit card to scrape off the frost on my windows the once a year we do get it.

You might get to use it a bit more once you move to GA...not too often since you'll be pretty far south...so don't forget to pack it. BTW, how is packing coming along?

Oh I'll bring it. It's in my car. Packing is coming along OK I suppose. Just annoying. I hate packing. But it is for a good reason so that keeps me going. Bout to go get some boxes out of my bedroom closet that I put in when I moved down here and go through them and see if there is anything I can Toss. There is actually a lot I can't pack yet because I will need it for the next couple weeks. LOL. Like everything in my kitchen and bathroom stuff. I'll be glad when I'm done though.

LOL! Sue..I feel for you girlfriend!
But remember the rules,
* Have plenty of water on hand..both for drinking/cooking/ teeth and for FLUSHING! A big trashcan weighed down with bricks will collect enough flushing and washing water..also good for animals. City water may become contaminated by runoff, or sewer backups.
*Have food on hand that doesn't need to be cooked..beans, canned fruits, canned meals and of course chocolate. Plenty of animal food and a hand crank opener.
*The elec may go down, you should have a way to heat things up..a fireplace, a BBQ, a hibachi. Instant coffee or tea is nice, just hot water is needed. Find your cooler and get it ready to hold all the ice you can make. *If you think the elec could go out..fill your freezer with as much as you can..a full freezer stays colder longer. Ice is great but anything will do.
*Have a way to light things up..check the batteries on the flashlight, make sure you have oil for lamps and a radio.
*Gas the car..NOW!
*Charge the cell phone.
*Take a bath, wash your hair and make something to eat. Dig out your CD player and have a stack of music ready to play.
*This all sounds so stupid for the North, but if you lose elec, you lose well water, you lose any way of keeping things cold or heat things up..you can't bathe or watch T.V. At night it gets really dark!
*The basic rule is food, water and heat. back up your backups and stay inside away from windows..if the wind blows it is best to be in a room without windows or a basement. (none here)
*Thank your lucky stars if you never need this advice, we go through this on a regular basis. We have a genny and tarps..wood for the windows and plenty of firewood, charcole and backup water. Even the dog has a stack of newpapers in the utility room in case she can't go outside to toilet!
Fema can kiss my socks for telling us to be prepared for 3 days..it was a week to 2 weeks per hurricane!

You know, I'm actually almost perfectly set up for emergency storm survival..and have back-ups for my back-ups, except my half dead basement sump pump. I'm shopping the auto 12 volt systems now. We've had terrible ice storms up here in recent years, but I can cook and heat entirely with wood as needed. Always lotsa food, 30 gallons potable water in the hot water heater if nothing else available; antique camper can run entirely propane..including fridge, heat, lights.. as last resort shelter. I'm old enough to remember !!THE BLIZZARD OF '78!! up here, which is why we all buy bread and milk if a flake falls!

Well I just checked Bill, he's a cat 1, 40 MPH winds..no biggie except for the surfers! I thought he was going to stay humongous. As long as you aren't on the Islands or beach you should be fine, just a rainmaker.:)
Glad you are prepared anyway..never can tell..
When I was in Cheyenne, we had winds of 80 mph. I was a new wife and new to the west so I had no idea how wild the wind was. I began bringing in the lawn stuff and taping up the windows (2nd floor..no wood panels) My neighbor called my husband who came home and asked what I was doing? Hurricane force winds I said! He asked where the nearest body of water was...ummm the Pacific or the park..then the light dawned!;-)
Oh well, I was raised in Florida..I was getting prepped! But I still say somebody could have mentioned that real shoes were needed! All I had were sandles!:p

You know, I've been looking at survival kits online lately and have been feeling the need to invest a few hundred dollars in something. Not that I need anything. I'm in a tornado area in Nebraska and if my house gets hit, it's gone. :) Besides I have family here I could go live with so it's not like the whole city would be flooded and I'd need supplies. Just part of my neurotic addiction to be prepared for everything. Plus the kits are soooo cool. I even want the pet survival kit for my furbaby. :D

Girl, you are preachin' to the choir! I fully believe in being prepared. The glich in the system is to be prepared for what? My thing is hurricanes and tornados. I have been through both. I was in a trailer (never again!) when a tornado hit our trailer park..What a freakin' mess! We were tipped over on our side, both kids slept thru it! No one in the whole park was hurt more then a few cuts and bruises. But at least half of the trailers were totaled. Meaning they had holes in them or no roofs. One crushed a car flat!
Decide what you really need and look on-line..they make everything from personal water purifiers to cement bomb shelters. Be picky!
The basics are the best..camp stuff and a good ditty bop bag (a bag to bug out of town if needed) Have a small footlocker (1/2 lockers) ready for your personal papers and meds handy. They make pretty good end tables or foot of the bed seats. Don't wait for an emergency to sort your papers into folders and put them where you can get them!
The pets can have their own bag. Don't forget to put a bowl or two in it with a can opener.
It's hard to get meds to stock up on. Refill a few days early and keep the extra in rotation, soon you will have an extra few weeks worth.
A small amount of cash/change on hand is helpful if there is a power outage..machines won't work and they can't use credit or checks without it in stores.
A gas can (empty until things look dicey) is a good thing to have as is a can of oil or two and a can of tire sealer.

lol, that's right, we had the book discussion about Alas, Babylon. Maybe that's what triggered my interest?

I actually found one at CostCo online where the emergency food is vegetarian Costco - Food For Health? Deluxe Family Emergency Supply Kit so it would be a good start. Then add the furbaby kit at some point (I have some extra supplies I could add now, but I found a kit that has portioned food in single serving bags with a 5 yr shelf life). I figure for just over 100 bucks it's something anyway. I got really caught up in looking at them last week, it's a good thing I'm not a compulsive buyer!

Your ideas are awesome, tho! Especially the meds and ppwk. Since I have my own printer/copier there's no excuse for not making copies, eh?

Hi all. Just want to say thank you to Jennee for inviting me. I have been one of those lurkers, reading and not posting a lot. So finally now I am getting out of my shell.
How I got introduced to pv's is when my work went tobacco free on July 1st, meaning no tobacco use during breaks. I work in a field that I can't leave the facility and actually there isn't really anything such as a break. So to get by the ban I first started with lozenges and using a straw to mimic the oral part of smoking. I found the lozenges made my gums, and teeth very sore, and of course cranky, especially when my relief is late, as I could not wait to get to my car and light up. Well pv's fixed that. I can't openly vape at work...as that not really kosher according to the higher ups (says it emulates smoking but doesn't lozenges, and gum emulate chewing tobacco then???Anywhooo that could be another post) so that is what bathroom breaks are for... shhhhhh...let's keep that a secret.. Well I continued to use my pv and now have been analog free since mid July. I started with an Envy it's a small pv...gets me by at work as I can keep in my pocket. Then came a J118 (VX2), then a 510, and now a M201 (penstyle)... I collect PV's like my sis collects Coach purses. I love the M201...it's my go to PV for home and the mini pens are for out and about. So that is a lil background info on me. :)

Hi Chellepelle! I got into this myself thinking it might get me thru work when I can't smoke, if nothing else..it gets you thru a lot more if you give it a chance!

We've somehow into the subject of storm prep here, this being my fault..we're in with a lot of Florida folk here, and we're gettin' hurricanes, they're not!

So, bad weather 20 miles east and west of me, and sunny, no wind or rain, at my place. Can't complain, but kinda freaky. I'll go out for a bike ride today after all...
