Hi, I signed up on this forum a long time ago but I haven't really used it, so I'm new, but not new.
I'm hoping someone can help me out with some good suggestions for a new ecig vaporizer kit (doesn't HAVE to be a kit). I'm a little confused by all the technical things involved with good vaporizers. We have used a manual 900 mAh Vapor Zues from Vapor4Life for several years and we are ready for a change. The tanks and cartomizers for these tend to be very inconsistent and either leak or don't work at all (or work little). We mix our own juice.
We want to start over with something more dependable and more satisfying. I don't think either of us would be happy with a box style and probably be more happy with a pen or eGo style. We also do not want something really expensive. I would like to be able to replace batteries for under $50. We have had to replace the V4L Vapor Zues batteries several times and they are expensive.
My spouse was a heavy smoker and still smokes a little cigarettes thus NEEDS high nicotine content. Plus wants more vapor but not necessarily a super lot like you see some people doing.
Must haves:
Passthrough charging
manual button (not automatic)
minimum 900 mAh
tank that holds enough juice to last all day for a heavy vaper (currently using 6 ML Dual Coil Tank - 808D Threading with cartomizer from V4L)
tank not too complicated
probably prefer pen or eGo style and a threading that is common (Maybe eGo or 510???)
battery lasts all day and holds up well over time &/or inexpensive to replace battery
(I've wondered about a battery than could use alkalines in an emergency &/or replaceable rechargeables but not necessary)

Unsure about:
Top fill or bottom fill
ohms, subohm and pretty much all the technical stuff
bottom coil Clearomizer ??? (I read that's best?)

Kits I have been looking at but am unsure if they meet our preferred specs and what kind of tanks they use:
Eleaf iJust2
Kanger Subvod C
Joyetech Ego One CT
innokin endura t18
Innokin iTaste VV4 (out of stock right now)

Feel free to ask me any questions for a clearer understanding of our needs. Thanks.

Can I be opinionated?

iJust2 is an insane step up. It's nearly 60 watts out the box. Cloud chunkin' juice eatin' value-for-money oddity.

Subvod C - about 27 watts out the box. Similar to standard Subvod 'slim' (with the Nano tank). I like mine a lot. Like a more modern eGo kit, but on steroids. :)

Ego ONE CT.... hmm.... don't have it (have some of the tanks), but the CL heads in temperature control version (Ni or Ti) are remarkably bad. The last one gave me one tank before it started chopping my vape down from 14.8 watts (not a lot) to about 8 watts at best. No, no... no... just no.... dreadful....

Endura T18... the beginners choice and a great medium/low power vape with a super-tight draw.

Innokin VV4.... gone the way of the dinosaurs.... not even worth a shout in 2015, let alone 2017.

Nothing will work with Alkaline batteries in emergency.

The regular Subvod (1,300mAh) with the Nano might be worth a look. *edit* too small a tank! It'll seem many times more powerful than the V4L stuff.
For some reason, the Subvod C seems cheaper where I look and is newer. Maybe the 'C' after all?

It uses 3.7v from start to finish, which sounds like 'not enough' but these days, things are very different. The new batteries can power very low resistance atomizers for vapes up to 60w, like the iJust2. I do like the iJust2, but I can't live with such a powerful vape and it's fragile... and breaks...

I'm probably not going to help you much, but feel a need to at least mention my experience.

I, too resisted converting to a box mod. It just didn't seem "right" to me. But I also had the same wants you list in your "must haves", especially a tank that a fill and battery would lasts all day. But I didn't like a top heavy larger tank on a small pen. So I finally broke down and picked up an MVP 2.0 for my Aero Tank Mega. I was soon very happy and comfortable using a box.

That was a couple years ago and I have now moved on to mods that use external batteries and won't go back. But it was hard to take that first step.

So if you are open to looking, an MVP 3 (built in battery), IPV D2, or Pico are small mods that may make the transition easier. And if not, I fully understand.

Good luck whichever direction you go.

Thanks for the help everyone! I was just chatting with MFS and the 'chat person' suggested the Kanger Subvod (not the Subvod C). They said the Subvod is better constructed than the C and has a bigger tank (3.2mL vs the 2.8mL on the Subvod C). We do want something more powerful but not necessarily super cloud powerful.

Is your Aero Tank Mega 3.8ml capacity?

The Ijust2 was a nice unit with good clouds and reasonable taste, pity their switches were poor and tends to stop working after a few months. I had two of them die at just about the same time and then saw on the internet this was a common complaint.

THANKS! That one is out of the running now! I want lastability!

Oh... you are talking the 'daddy' Subvod with the Subtank mini (not the Nano). I can roll in that direction. :)

So, this might sound stupid, but is there a big difference in how much liquid you need in the newer style tanks with replacement heads vs how much you need in the old ones with the plain ole cartomizers we are using?

Yes. A newer clearomizer/tank uses more liquid. A newer subohm clearomizer uses even more liquid.
A full sized subtank (mini, 3+ ml) won't last me a day and I tend to vape it as low as I can in all honesty.

There are two versions (well, more actually - you might want to disregard the temperature one)

Subvod 1,300 with Nano tank.
Subvod Mega 2,300 with Mini Tank.

Be sure to choose wisely. :)

I suppose? This is what I looking at... The Kanger Subvod Kit with the Toptank Nano as shown here: Subvod Starter Kit by Kanger
Is this what you meant?

So far this seems to be my top choice. I'm still up for any better suggestions though.
(And the best place to purchase from ... We have bought a lot of liquids from MFS so I do trust them but they don't seem to carry some of the stuff I have looked at)

Edit: Aw shoot, they are removing my links. I didn't realize that. Sorry, I didn't know I couldn't post links.

I bought my little brother the G.Priv smok kit. Dual 18650s and big baby tank. Upgraded from Wismec rx200. He loves the setup. Performs well, looks good and does the job. All tanks leak. Fact. It comes down vape style. Bro likes warm vapes. I like cool vapes and don't give a hoots about how it looks. Smok big baby is good. TFV8 is plain nuts in a stupid smiling way. If your a flavour chaser then RTA Petri or kayfun v5 are hard to beat.

Hmm. That's the smaller one (18.55mm diameter), I was thinking the bigger one (fatter battery @ 22mm) but it's up to you. (I have the slim one)...

I thought maybe the cartomizers soak up a lot of the liquid which would make it really be like our current 6ml w/cart was holding 3 or so. Maybe we shouldn't go with subohm if we want it to last longer, eh? I'm not so sure we really need the subohm.

I just looked at the Subvod Mega with the Mini...That looks nice! I see the Mini holds 4ml. But still probably goes empty fast. sigh

I'm trying to choose wisely but I really don't know which way to go for long lasting battery and liquid with dependability also.

PS. What did you mean by disregard the temperature one?

Yeah, I guess the Mega & the Mini are the 22 mm

Any opinion on the iJoy eGo-C Twist 1300mAh Variable Voltage Battery? I realize it might not be as good as the Subvod, but I'm wondering if we really need the high powered fancy stuff with SubOhm capability. I'm assuming it can use most any 510 or eGo tank. Would it still be better than the Vapor Zues we have now?

Oh wait...it looks like it is not a passthrough charging battery. Strike that idea.

Strike it double. Those types of batteries are infamous for not lasting well.

The Eleaf GS air 'M' tank takes non-sub-ohm coils (1.2ohm version) and might work on a subvod battery.
I'll try it later.....

I use the clone one from Fasttech after I gave the original away (which is better)....

Mmmm. 1.2ohms is a bit low for the 3.7v battery.
I remember trying the Subtank Nano with the 1.2ohm Kanger coil and being unimpressed.
It should be 11 watts, but I'm not convinced.... seems more like single figures to me.

Eleaf do a 0.75ohm 'pure cotton/AIR' coil which would have more horsepower!
