So after several days of research and some help and advise from this forum, tomorrow I am ordering my husband and I our first starter kit of Ecigs. In addition I explained this to my mother and I am ordering her a starter kit as well and she's joining the switch. All good.

Next step.... telling the kids and explaining the switch to them. We have four kids at home and three kids in college. The kids at home all understood the concepts and what a good change this is and are very happy and excited for us to make this change. They are supportive and even interested in hearing how analog dangers vs ecig non dangers. Today we picked up two of the three kids from college for their spring break and after hearing all about things happening in their lives and college stuff it was our turn to share with them what's been happening on the home front. So we tell them about the ecig and the positive changes it will have on our health and lives. Well....a bite disappointed with their lack of support and lack of willingness to listen and understand. After 30 mins of a huge debate one of the two finally begrudgingly acknowledged it was at least better than real smoking but made sure she gave the last word of her ultimate disapproval of all of it. College kid number two made me so mad I could have smacked him! I didn't but I wanted too. He wasn't rude in talking but he was so "anti" anything and in his opinion vaping is smoking!

So, if you can imagine, a bite disappointed with their lack of support and acceptance. Especially when their younger siblings can grasp and understand, support and accept and encourage the change. Any advise as to how to handle this with college kids. I wasn't expecting what I got from them especially knowing they disapprove of our smoking so much. Thought they'd be happy....not acting like ignorant fools! We pay a lot of money for their college education, one would expect a bite less ignorance! *rant over*

Help, advise anyone.

Well, I am a college student myself but I am 26. Since they're in college, rather than just telling them actually show them the websites explaining what vaping is and the differences between smoking and vaping. Ultimately, acceptance generally comes with time. It takes time for even the most stubborn individual to understand something they don't want to in the first place.

Patience. You're the parent, they're the child. They will accept your new turn for the better and eventually understand that you'll be much happier and healthier which is all that matters!

That is disappointing. My wife had the same reaction, which after 20 years of her telling me to quit was pretty annoying. After she realized I wasn't going to be deterred, she did some research to "arm" herself for the next session. To her credit, I came home one night and she told me she had come to the conclusion that ecigs were a pretty good idea. Give your kids some time, they'll probably notice that you smell better and have stopped wheezing.

That is understandable with college kids. My good friend, who went to college for four years around 30ish, loves the movie "super size me" he had to write four papers based on the move. I introduced him to a movie called "Fat Head" which -debunks- "Super Size Me" and his reaction was like "NO WAY IS THAT FILM CORRECT, I HAD TO WRITE 5 PAPERS ON SUPERSIZE ME, if Super Size me is a lie, then why did I have to write papers on it?"

College kids worship their professors and it is hard to get them to believe otherwise, even from their parents. Welcome to the liberal propaganda machine...

I said 5 PAPERS, -- but I mean to hit 4 PAPERS --

Fortunately I am in school for a medical profession (RN) I don't think I'll be writing too many papers like that one! My focus is a little more technical rather than opinionated :)

Just tell them that if the college they are going to can't teach them to keep an open mind, do proper research before arguing, and to not act like a rude snot - maybe you should stop making those tuition payments. They obviously know everything they can figure out how to pay for it themselves. Maybe that will change their attitude.

This guy was a nursing student too. Hopefully you have more open minded profs.

LOL! A nursing student writing papers on the documentary "SuperSize Me"? That's well umm, I don't know what to say. My classes are a little more focused on direct nursing. (It's a school only for nursing, Lutheran School of Nursing) I highly doubt I'll have a professor like that guys. But, who knows right?

You know what is funny? I always said, one of my best friends is in college to become a nurse, but I hope he is NEVER my nurse... HAHAHAHAHA

This really surprises me. I have 4 college age kids and they are thrilled about this. Of course I had been talking about trying them for months and so been educating them along the way as I learned. By the time I finally started vaping (took to it right away and quit analogues on day one) they were so excited. I think maybe the newness of it is what might be scaring your kids. Arm yourself with plenty of facts. But above all, don't let them stop you from feeling excited and proud of yourselves! I just can't believe how many people on here are getting negative feedback from family and friends. You would think they would be thrilled we were trying to say good-bye to smoking. Oh well, at least you have us to say "YEAH FOR YOU!"

I'm sorry you arent getting the support you deserve from your older kids. One would think they would be more open and understanding of how much better vaping is than smoking, and that they are NOT one and the same.

Not to hijack your thread, but I have sort of the opposite problem. I started vaping because my kids were begging me to quit smoking, my middle son, 12 years old, actually recommended that I try the electronic cigarette. Now that I am vaping, they both (my youngest is 10 year old) seem overly interested in my "cool toys", to the point that they have even asked to try it because it smells so yummy. This bothers me!! I absolutely dont want them to think that this is "cool"... when I was young and started smoking I did so from peer pressure and because it was "cool". UGH

They hated my smoking, now they think vaping is cool...

LOL! - Naw I'm sure he'll make an excellent nurse. He just has to get over a couple of speed bumps first. I had a pretty bad psychology class (well not bad, just extremely irrelavent to nursing) but I pushed most of the useless facts out of my brain after I aced those tests. I think some people really soak in every word their professor breaths and others have the ability to retain what is and isn't important. Thank God I believe I am the second one.

Sorry they were not supportive! There support would be good but not necessary as my oldest daughter expressed her disgust for my smoking habit at least a 1,000 times but yet I smoked anyway as you probably did also!
I would assume the next conversation after you quit smoking would go like this at least at my house it would! I quit smoking! I feel better! My health is improving! PERIOD! I changed your diaper, fed you, and kept you from going to prison with that one friend of your I didn't like and got you in college! It's not a negotiation! Now you....do the dishes....and you take out the trash! Me and your Dad will be in the living room Vaping our heads off! LOL
Sorry i'm not very diplomatic LOL

I guess I've been lucky...all of my family and friends have been thrilled to the point that they let me vape in their homes and cars. Even my grandma...I didn't see that coming at all! Of course, they are all non smokers so just the fact that I don't reek like smoke is an improvement to them.

As for your kids not being supportive, I guess I would just send them some facts about vaping in an email, and leave it at that. 2 of my doctors have told me that the nicotine I'm getting from vaping is not much more dangerous than caffeine or alcohol and that I shouldn't worry about trying to go down to 0 nic unless I feel ready. We support you!!!!

I look it as a BIG step in the right direction and agree with fuzznut.

I certainly had tobacco withdrawals--and making it through that is huge, and surprised me actually. I'm sure you will enjoy your adventure in these coming weeks and months.

I also think those against equate it to smoking---and boy are there some avid anti smokers out there. The more popular vaping gets the more avid they will become---but also, many more will get educated and more acceptance. It's going to be fun to participate in this evolution.

Who knows, someday I may get to vaping 0 nic -- just to be ornery!
