At first, my wife was freaked out and demanded that I vape outside, not in front of the children, yadda yadda yadda... I never paid much attention and just wen't on vaping whenever I pleased. One day she told me, "you smell like a freaking pancake!" (Vaping maple at the time) I went full-blown theater on her. I ran to the shower and threw my clothes out saying, "do you have some tongs? I need to burn those when I get out of the shower. MAN! I will NEVER get this pancake smell out of my hair." She kept it up and so did I, for about a year, at which point she gave up. A few weeks back, I was fogging up the place with some Waffle flavor. She actually said it smelled good and asked what flavor it was. I said, "Thanks, it's...uhm it's not Pancake, it's Waffle."

Now here's the point. My wife is Scottish. If she can come around, then there's hope for the rest of the world. Just keep vaping.

I got the "way it looks" remark and asked to not do it before so I didn't but it's just so stupid stupid stupid. There's a lot of stupid out there so I figure e cigs isnt the only stupid damn thing stupid people get stupid about

No it isn't (texting and driving comes to mind) but we as vapers are a little more sensitive to it when we're on the receiving end.

But think of this...society has been screaming for years about how bad smoking is for you. It's evil, evil, evil and people who smoke are evil (or stupid) and...well I'm sure you've heard it all before.

I don't think anyone should be surprised at a negative reaction to something that appears to be something that has been demonized for decades. Completely understandable. That's why it's up to us to remain level headed and take the high road...nobody else has a vested interest in seeing things our way.

Weird ain't it?

The rabidly anti-nicotine zealots have convinced people that if THE CHILDREN even so much as see something that vaguely resembles smoking, they'll rush out and hold up convenience stores to get cigarettes.

And there's no arguing the point. They're right. Period. We're wrong. Period. It's quasi-religious. Nicotine is demonic and the ANTZ are holy warriors out to defeat the great satan.

I'm just surprised they haven't flown planes into tobacco company office buildings...

#1) Wow!
#2) Yup, that's pretty much it;)

I had a co-worker really shoot me down when I told him I'd quit smoking, switched to vape. I expected an atta-boy, but you'd think I'd switched to cigars or chew by his reaction. Felt lousy.
.

That ^^ When you put it that way, I realized that what I was feeling was hurt. It hurt my feelings that after literally decades of killing myself, I'm taking proactive measures for my health and felt I got slapped in the face. (It was a family member)

My family dies.. Often and early. I was an idiot to ever smoke at all... My mother has made it the longest (62). Her dad and older sister died in their early to mid 40s. Her mother died in her mid 50s. Mom had cancer at 50 but survived. I think I expected a party and that's what made my reaction so strong.

Oh well. My lungs, my wallet and now, my VAPE!

People floor me. I'm floored.

This reminded me of a quote from the movie Pretty Woman

Edward Lewis: It's just that, uh, very few people surprise me.

Vivian: Yeah, well, you're lucky. Most of 'em shock the hell outta me.

The older I get, the truer that gets.

I actually had my first (semi) run-in with this issue earlier tonight while I was out to dinner with a good buddy of mine and his folks. We were at a "donation based dinner party" out in the county where his folks live. Real cool place, fantastic wood fired oven, killer pizza. My buddy and I are both cooks by trade and education, so we had spent most of the dinner hanging out and chatting with the woman running the event and her husband, who has actually been trying to quit with ecigs and asked me about mine when he saw me semi-stealth vaping (not so much stealth vaping as just not drawing much attention to it) as he had never seen one like mine.

We (my buddy, his folks, and I) were heading out with another couple, who had a very young daughter I had been, and continued to be, careful to avoid vaping around out of respect for them. His folks had seen me vaping earlier, asked me about it, and once I explained it to them commended me on my recent week without cigarettes. I was getting a few puffs in before we got in their car to head back to their home, and the woman from the other couple comes up behind us and asks "Are you smoking?". I answer no, and explain what an ecig is, what is in the juice, what is in the vapor, and that it allows me to get the nicotine I enjoy in a greatly harm reduced manner, using the typical caffeine comparison. She gives me a sort of scoffing look and says something to the tune of "Or you could just not use anything." Irk'd the $#!% out of me, but I refrained from saying anything else because she is friends with my buddy and his family, and anything I would have said would have probably resulted in me reacting in a typical "kitchen" manner (I have a very direct, no BS taken manner of dealing with folk)... which just isn't something I honestly like to deal with all that often.

I just do not understand why people cannot let something that damn near boarders on harmless, and has NO IMPACT ON THEM WHATSOEVER, choose to criticize one small lifestyle choice I make. I enjoy nicotine. I plan on continuing to use it for the rest of my life, albeit in as healthy a manner as possible. That does not effect you. My vapor does not effect you. Leave it be!

I fix machines for a living because it's illegal to fix people.

illegal? I was thinking impossible lol

honestly thats crazy that u got that response from your beloved. My mom gets bad migraines, triggiered by strong smells like perfume and cigarettes. The first time after I got my KGO I pulled it out in the car with her driving and had a few vapes. She made no comment until she saw me vaping and asked wat it was and y I was smoking in her car. I explained wat it was and asked her if she could smell it at all, and she said no. After I had vaped for about ten mins she said it has a really light scent sort of like caramel corn, and didnt mind it at all. Mind you my mom is pretty open minded and she HATED the fact that I smoked analogs, for a variety of reasons, hers and my own health and well being at the top of the list.

Oh my. You have more self control than I do.

Believe me, if it had been anyone but a friend/family friend of the fellow who is planning on becoming my roommate, and his folks had not been around (I was doing my best to make a good impression), I would have NOT exhibited as much self control as I did. I have no issue being confrontational but I HAVE learned to pick my battles.

I think I've been really lucky in that the non-smokers among my coworkers, friends, and family have all been really supportive of my switch to ecigs. But I realize that when it comes to the rest of world, clouds coming out of my mouth = smoking, regardless of whether it's smoke or vapor. When it comes to vaping around people, and vaping in public, I still treat it like I'm smoking. Yes, it may be pretty harmless, but it's still best (IMO) to be polite about it.

It took me a minute to figure it out, too. I hope it helped, and I just wanted to reply to say your post was valuable to me, I don't feel like the odd man out.

:) +1

A frazzled church employee approached me and said, "Sir, I know it's vapor but please...not in the rectory."
I'm a nurse, and I felt compelled to tell a visitor in our facility the same thing... as I pulled my ego out of my pocket to show her.

But we also need to use common sense and not vape where it may be inappropriate to do so (such as in a crowded theater or restaurant).

Exactly.

I have encountered almost all positive responses to include the one doctor I work with that is extremely anti-smoking. I expected a lecture when I told him the success I had... basically once I started vaping I didn't pick up another cigarette. Instead of a scathing response, I got "It's a step in the right direction". I was completely dumbfounded.

ETA: As far as objectionable things to see, I think sagging pants, muffin tops and/or skinny jeans on fat people are much more worthy of eye bleach than seeing someone vape, drink, or smoke.

I guess that I am pretty lucky too in that my family, friends and co-workers have been very supportive of this change of mine. Actually, I've had to ask a couple of them to quit telling me how proud they are of me - LOL - I'm still hitting the nicotine after all, and I don't want them to put the hootis on me. At the same time, it would have hurt my feelings to have my positive change treated like no change at all.

So props to all of us - we are doing much better with the vape than we ever were with those other things. :)

I was at a family event and the host saw me vaping walking down the path to my room. She politely informed me smoking wasn't allowed on the grounds and I told her I wasn't smoking. And she became curious. I explained what the e-cig was and it was simply water vapor and she was intrigued. After a short education lesson she was alright but just not indoors and I was fine with that (it was a heritage building and wouldn't anyway).
A lot of you nailed it. Be polite and respectful about it. It actually becomes a good conversation starter!
