He was lucky it didn't ignite the vapors above the puddle. ignition temperature is about 495° F (232(232° C), temperature of a cigarette heater is 1100F. 1600 after a 2 second drag.
You have your chemistry totally wrong as well. Gas fumes don't require any percentage of O2 to ignite, all they require is the presence of O2. It will use whatever is present until it's gone. I think what you are getting at, is gas needs to be at a certain density to ignite as a chain reaction.

Doesn't really matter anyway, since it is illegal to vape in non smoking areas

Long ago I used to work on my own cars and being a smoker was curious how dangerous it was to smoke while doing so. So I tried an experiment by putting gas into a small can, shaking it, taking off the top and seeing if I could get it to lite with a cig. I couldn't and I tried many times, it just would work, so I came to the conclusion that it wasn't very dangerous and smoked/fixed away for many years without a problem. Was always careful with open flame though.

It's surprisingly hard to light with a cig. I was never really the type to smoke while filling up, but vape - whatever. As another posted said, you won't enjoy vaping if the fumes are that strong. Also, I wouldn't use the Noisy Cricket with a .05 ohm build and dry cotton, next to a gas tanker beside a large crowd swarming the hot dog stand. (Well, I wouldn't do that anyways any where.) What gas station has an outdoor hot dog stand?

If I vape while I'm pumping, I'll start the pump, go back inside my car behind tinted windows and do it there, discretely. Not bc I think anything could happen, but bc everyone knows you're not supposed to smoke at the pump, and I don't want to be the dingus that some ....... saw using a vape pen at a gas pump and complains about.

I usually try not to look like a dumb ... in public.

Yeah I also used to be an auto tech, we'd throw lit cigarettes in a barrel of gas. Did it a million times never one fire. Weird to see but makes sense if you consider that gas is atomized, compressed and *then* ignited in a combustion engine. We mostly did it to freak out the annoying customers and get them to leave

You know, the ones that come in bc they aren't satisfied just talking to the service writer, and then just stand around watching and getting in the way.

edit, btw if anyone does that consider this, they don't have anywhere to be, you do. also, how good of a job would you if I came to your workplace and stared over your shoulder for a few hours? No pressure. Me, chances are I'm gonna work on any car but yours.
